What happened to Cav? I do not understad German so much. Was he in the bunch?

Meersman said they were going to race for Cav if he was there at the top of the climb, but he wasn't, so they were racing for Meersman.
Hopes to win another stage tomorrow or the next day.
I wonder if Cav is a wee bit lacking in motivation these days?
