One of the Colombians. What a team they have for this. I hope Valverde will finally get this one though.

Colombia has eight riders in WT Teams, so they will have a maximum of eight riders in this race.

Let's not forget that this race is 280 km's long. Longest course since 1981. You can clearly see, that Zomegnan is involved in this.

Dan Martin, because I am Irish and reasoning emotionally.

You're reasoning rationally as well; the rider who wins the toughest hilly one-day race so far of the season, is automatically a big favourite on such a circuit.

Nibali. He'll take some time off after the Giro and build up to the Vuelta / Worlds.

Even with his Worlds 2012 form, I think it'll be too hard for Gilbert. Only Gilbert 2011 would have stood a chance.

Please tell me you're kidding.
It's twelve times over the final two climbs on the profile.

Would love to see Dan Martin win it but he wont have the benefit of a super strong Hesjedal working for him. (Still a possible though).
Going with Betancur backed by excellent Colombian squad.

3 times 2nd in the Tour de France, 2nd in the Giro, WINNER, Liege Bastogne Liege, podium Liege Bastogne Liege, 5th place olympic road race.

When you have a 28 year old in the field with that palmares going into a worlds which has as much climbing in it as a Giro dolomite stage, ya, he has a chance.

Well said, doesn't get the respect he deserves.

They may well end up with fewer riders than last year (7) - Sarmiento, Anacona (injured), Serpa (working for Scarponi in the Giro) and Ospina are far from certain to score any WT points before the cut-off date, so they will probably only get 6 riders.

such a shame. I was looking forward to some of those continental riders who are superior climbers to Nibali, making the early moves.

why do they need wt points?
Because the top 10 teams in the WT get 9 riders, but only if they have 9 riders who have scored WT points. That's why last year, Slovakia, for example, had only six riders although they were in the top 10. Places not taken up by those teams are redistributed to the teams ranked 11-15, so that's why Colombia had an extra rider in addition to the six they were entitled to as the leading team on the Americas Tour. As they seem almost certain to be in the top 10 countries this year, they need all of their WT riders to score points.

Don't worry, continental riders can still be selected for the team. It's just that their results won't count when deciding rider allocations.

This is all assuming that the UCI haven't changed the rules since last year.

It's the points of the nation as a whole that determines how many riders can enter the world championships. As I can recall, the top 10 nations get nine riders - Colombia are second at the moment.

I tried to map Via Salviaiti: (and made the graph myself...)
bpIrRyi.png

Data I used:
Via Salviati: 610m @ 9.8% (81m-141m=60m)

260m 10% (81-107)
130m 19% (107-131)
220m 4.5% (131-141)

______

Via Trento I get to 140m @ ~10%
