Would have thought Dumoulin would have improved his climbing this offseason, even at the risk of taking his very good ITT down a notch, so that he might place better in stage races. Looks like he did the opposite. Maybe he really wants to win the Eneco Tour that he was 2nd in last year.

Dumoulin might have improved in the Ardennes.
He'll never be a high mountain climber, that much was obvious way way way before. He's simply not built for that.

He'll be a rider like Tony Martin (but most probably not THAT level in ITT, it's inhuman :p )

there's nothing good about duarte's result yesterday

btw anyone have a video of the climb?

I disagree. It's March and it was a mountain finish. He cramped up, forcing him to get dislodged from the lead group. Cramps are usually nutrition related. He slowly but surely starting coming back and was the lead in his group. At one point, he was well over 50 seconds down with about 1.5 km to go. Yes, the front 4 were playing games, but that allowed a group of 3 that were going hard to rejoin. Duarte wasn't seeing anywhere at this point. He still managed to get it down to 36 secs, bringing in a group of 5 with him.
This showed his ability NOT to quit, slowly getting back, like he did in California or in the Giro last year.
Now, he hasn't yet shown his attacking style, like in Terrino or like in the worlds (or the Giro 2012), but still a promising result.

it doesn't show anything. duarte can suffer like no one else on a bike in a race. the problem is he can't suffer in training and he doesn't even train. also where did you hear about the cramps? or that he was 50 seconds behind at 1.5 km?

You make a fine point, perhaps he is hoping he can stand out going for a long attack in the Ardennes. With Warren Barguil and Dumoulin, GSH has an impressive pair of young challengers whenever long-range uphill strikes are called for.
