Personally, I'm thinking we might see Evans take this, just a feeling. Scarponi and Pozzovivo could also win/get a podium.

I'm hoping for young Italian phenoms of Pirazzi, Aru, and Locatelli to do well the most though.

You guys knew this was coming. ;)

You mean because Gilbert today you think maybe all of BMC will feel like its 2011 again?

It would surprise me though. Evans is what 37 years old now. Guys like Sastre and Sanchez lost their gc ability in their early 30's.

Based on his last race in Spain I don't think he will win which is a good thing as he is aiming for the Giro but he should be competitive at this stage of his preparation. For Evans it's all about how much improvement he actually has left.

Never doubt my instincts! Called it! :D

So you think he's got a shot at the podium in the Giro now that he's training properly?
Also, do you know where he lives in Italy? Tuscany?

he lives in lombardia I think and I doubt a podium. he's always been very inconsistent, but also undertrained. I stay very wary of duarte. in colombia he is/was basically seen as a lost cause and he has no friends either, also not among his teammates. of course if you win you have friends.

Anyone have any hope that Basso can turn this around before the Giro? Moser equally looks terrible for Cannondale. I have no idea what they're going to be able to get out of the Giro. Especially considering Kittel is racing so Vivani will struggle to win a stage too.

Viviani will have a chance to win the sprint stages with a hill in the last 30k

As far as Basso is concerned, he does seems to be struggling, hopefully for him it is the effects of just coming off altitude training.

I'd be surprised if Basso could make the top 10 in the Giro. Long time since he has showed anything impressive although he was looking okay in the 2013 Vuelta before he pulled out on stage 14. Looked like he could have finished in the top 10 before he was effected by hypothermia.

Yeah, but Bennett also was at altitude with him and he seemed in great form.

Saving him for the Tour. VGD needs help in the mountains. I saw that coming since they hired him. IMHO.

Thanks. Hope he gets his own opportunities in the veulta or something like that.

He's going to be a pretty solid pro. The guy is only 58 kgs and took up the sport fairly late so he should progress a fair bit. The most talented NZ climber is actually James Oram who is at the Bissell development team in the States. He'll be leading their team at the Tour of California/Utah/Colorado this year and he's only 20

Thanks for that - I'll keep an eye on Oram as well. As an Aussie I can relate as until Evans came along we had no GC riders to cheer for since Phil Anderson who was a little bit before my time (Patrick Jonker and Brad McGee were the closest). So that is why this Bennett guy from NZ caught my attention in the results.

landa away from terrible euskaltel team starts flying and showing his real talent

You don't think his awesome Lagunas de Neila win in 2011 or being 6th in San Sebastián showed his real talent?

Sure, he'd stagnated since that breakthrough win, and a lot of that can be attributed to the poor management of Euskaltel in its last year or two, but it's not like he never showed anything in orange. He just did it in races with little coverage, mostly against mediocre fields at home in Spain (GP Big Mig, Vuelta a Asturias, La Rioja, Vuelta a Madrid), where ETB or RTP-A might show a half hour's highlights show at the end of the day that features quite a lot of the early part of the break and then a series of very short clips as they describe the actual business end of the race.

So it is. Guess I should have watched it first. Steephill has this link listed under stage 4. Just see D and C's post then.
