But give them the credit for getting up at ungodly hours and making the trek from wherever to wait for hours to catch just 2 glimpses of the riders (breakaway and the bunch)

Not this. To be fair, that's the case for any big crowd of any sport. It's all about doing the cool things your friends are doing, having some fun outside, posting good selfies on twitter, etc.
The biggest annual sporting event goes through your town... why would you not want to go and see it?

Well this is a good sign. Race livening up sooner than expected. Could see some good action over Holme Moss.

Still can't get my head round the size of these crowds. Brilliant to see!

Come on, it's piti we are talking about. He sucks more wheel than anyone. That's what he does.

He did it at stage 1 in pais basque...

Nvm that won't happen again, damn Contador. He punished Valverde for doing that.

It's like for 200 km there's people on both sides of the roads.

Seeing some replays on NBC, LOL at the Garmin riding just knocking random peoples phones out of their hands. :D Who was that?

While winning the sprint-at-the-top-of-the-climb is more or less Don Alejandro's calling card, races like Roma Maxima and the GP Big Mig show he has more weapons in his armoury if he has the chance.

It's lovely to see those crowds, but I don't really get it. Why are those people so supportive of the race? Is it just local patriotism, making their region look good on international tv or do they actually care about cycling?

Well cycling is the fastest growing sport in this country, mainly thanks to DB at British cycling and his success in the Olympics from Beijing onwards, plus would you not wish to come out and see one of the biggest events in the world go through your town?

Well, but you don't even see crowds like that in some random town in France or Italy.

That's real great pr for the team. The fans here seem interested in watching the race, but are infringing on the road a bit. It's definitely better than drunk idiots running along side the riders just trying to get on TV. Maybe the climbs aren't steep enough or, more likely, there's no room.

Don't get me wrong, it would be awesome if Valverde attacked from far out, but I don't think that will happen.

Navardauskas. The fan doesn't know it yet, but that is a better memory than whatever blurry picture he was going to get anyway. At least they get to tell a story now

Was he doing it on purpose?
