Question now is if anyone is going to ride the climb hard or if they will all just take it easy and recover after the excitement. Probably hard for any if the sprint teams to get enough men together to try to put rivals in difficulty.

Some people cannot be pleased. If the team is absent at the front they are weak and/or Contador is struggling, if they are driving a strong pace it's a waste of energy.

Yes, they could have got lucky with the split. They didn't, but they could have.

This.....we should be happy if a sh,itty stage on paper is actually raced and not make self important comments about this being futile or whatever. They raced, it did not go well, so be it. Btw hesjedal was caught out napping, so one dark horse out of contention

Well Tinkoff, Movistar and Sky still seem to be driving pretty hard at front at the moment. Can't work out to what end though?

Maybe they all think the GC guys of the other two are off the back. That would be fun. :D

both arent going for gc tho;)

I knew Cadel wasn't but I thought Talansky might try to get a "decent" placing. I had him in my top 20 for the GGTG....he is important to me. :)

I agree about your main point. When you split the field sometimes you get lucky in terms of who gets left behind and sometimes you don't.

I don't think that Hesjedal getting dropped is relevant to Contadir though - if Contador needs a minute on him, he's going to be fighting for sixth or seventh. And Contador doesn't see a difference between fourth and twentieth. When you have his palmares there are only two results, win or don't.

And I have Dan Martin in velogames ;) Nice to see that he will most likely be a sole leader of Garmin starting today

@CyclingUptodate: "Talansky is still not in the first group, he is 2 min back, but he is not here for the GC"

Probably a good thing for a points game, but I prefer to see him going primarily for stages. If he's the only Garmin leader left, he might be under pressure to protect sixth or whatever

One of the things that makes him fun is his "each stage a one day race" approach to GC.

Disagreed here. He has a decent uphill sprint and still will place high on stages if not win one. Let Talansky or Hesjedal get into brakes and try for a stage win.
I think Dan Martin is a dark horse for this Vuelta
