Why is a technical time trial a disadvantage for Degenkolb?

Technical in terms of the climbing rather than a street circuit etc.

No the course should be fine for him, maybe too short though.

He almost won a stage race in Italy last year and is pretty good uphill.

I hope you are right. We had a long discussion here last year or the year before about why exactly someone so good in the TT didn't have a pro contract. Nobody had a really convincing answer. At the very worst, someone with that TT level could sit on the front pulling back the break for a very very long time.

On another note, here's an interview with Sam Bennett, carried out before his second stage win:

That was the first time ever he showed something uphill and that is only when he is in top, top shape. He has been doing track this winter and in LBL he said he was still a couple of kg heavier than in fall last year when he went uphill well. The flatter the better for him, at least for now.

Wow, Quaade was more than a minute down on Dowsett.

Not surprised tbh. His top level is very good but his base level is nowhere near good enough to compete with established WT riders like Dowsett.

What chances do people give of Dowsett retaining the race lead? tomorrow is 197.8km and he didn't cope well in the Tour of Britain going over hills - albeit he had been in a breakaway the day before.

Well the result shows he's not in great condition but nothing to do with hills or no hills on the course. The uphill part seems to be ~100m rise in ~eight kilometres so not real hills anyway and btw Dowsett was caught and passed two times by Quaade, second time after a puncture, in the World Champions last year.

Even though he has proven he can go uphill when in top shape, a flatter course will always suit him better. Especially when he is not at his ideal weight (for road racing).

It's not that hard. Those tiny bumps are barely hills. But I'm sure Machado will try to go for those valuable bonus seconds (is there any?) in the sprints on the final stage.

So apart from a handful of boni here and there... it's a typical Bayern Rundfahrt (other than last year's more interesting route).

Of course they can. They could make one of the greatest short stage races on the planet with something for every type of rider in a 5-day race if they put their mind to it and the host towns were in the right areas. The problem at the moment is that even if the host towns aren't perfectly located, they don't even optimise the opportunities they DO have.

Can you give me a link to a page in Design thread if you made one (route)? ;)
