giro over.
bertie can soft-pedal the third week as a glorified training block.
his greatest challenge now might be to decide whether to fight for a stage win here or save his nrg for the double attempt.

anyone will predict what's going on with porte next? Leave Giro with sudden illness excuse? or injury of his knee after the crash news? or DB just want get refund for returning Porte's RV? :D

I think if you get purely analytical, which Sky claims they do, the most sense would be to withdraw and support Froome in the TDF. With Nibali, Quintana, and if he can keep fit and on form this Contador it's going to be a hell of a race so he's going to need Porte.

Immediate recall to Mt Teide to carry Froome's bottles for training rides.

DB just wants his money back.. Not to be confused with Oleg demanding his money back. lol

Koenig: the new Zubeldia?

No, he has been shown on TV several times already, and attacked in the Tour last year.

Up until todays stage I would've said Monfort was the new Zubeldia, they gave him quite a bit of air time today though.

Contador putting Aru in his place, lesson learnt: don't take the leaders jersey from Contador.

Just out of curiosity. What was Aru supposed to do? Sit and wait for Contador and lose time on everyone else? He didn't exactly attack he just rode to the finish after a massive crash as quickly as he could.

Errr. I don't think it meant seriously. Awesome ride by AC, though. He really is a tough ***.

can't help but feel the gt double endeavor will feel empty if he doesn't win the tdf.

He did exactly as he was supposed to do yesterday, but today Contador put him in his place, and that place is 2nd, not 1st.

But yeah it was meant as a bit of a joke post.

Without the time lost yesterday Konig would be 4th and he has been working for Porte. Top 5 still a possibility if he gets to ride for himself. Depends a bit on what Astana do and if they are prepared to risk throwing away Landa and Cataldo's top 10 in an attempt to attack.

What is Amador doing right up there? Surely he will not stay with the best in the real mountains

Van den Broeck seems to have sacrificed climbing for TTing, will lose lots of time in the mountains.
Question marks over Uran as well. Caruso is not good enough.

To be honest, I did figure that half way through typing my response. But I figured in for a Penny in for a Pound.

I think you're probably spot on with regards to the meaning of your post. I have little doubt Contador was extra motivated because he lost the jersey. Now obviously he would've taken the Pink either way, but he might have taken a few extra seconds just because of that.

Amador got allowed in the break on the Formolo stage, and has benefited from having guys up the road in what few climby stages there have been thus far. He's good on low to medium gradient type ascents and in terrible weather, so while he's not exactly renowned as a TTer the conditions suited him today. I can't imagine he'll stay remotely in contention come Cervinia and Sestriere (sure he won Cervinia last time, but no way he gets allowed in the break now, and the stage is harder before the final climb this year), but tomorrow's final climb ought to be one he can limit losses on. He might get a bottom end top 10 by the end of the race which I think would be a success for him. He'll just be asked to follow I think, Beñat's tilt at the GPM will mean he'll be up the road tomorrow and in the Cervinia stage giving Amador the chance to sit in with Movistar not needing to put any pressure on anybody.

Urán, Cataldo, Landa and Kreuziger are pretty much certainties to pass him before we even get to Finestre I'd have thought, JVDB probably though he's not climbing great at the moment. König more than likely too.

Chapeau Kiri. Very well deserved, that was a spectacular ride. It's a shame we have to see him waste some of his best years riding in the wind for Sky. :(

Kiry's bank account disagrees with you :p

Yes, they must be paying him very well !!!!!

Aru just had the ITT of his life! I'm not one of his biggest fans, but I gotta give the guy major props. He could have easily lost 5-6 minutes in previous years so this is something for him to build on in the future.

He lost 2:55 to Uran last year, and finished 16th so I think this is more or less where he would be expected. If you take into account that Contador was better than Uran last year, but Aru is also a year older.

Lol, how can people say Alberto would have won if not for the wind change? Look at the freaking road map, it's not 60k in one and the same direction  maybe the wind was favourable for him in the 2nd part, who knows.. it's impossible to say really.

The wind is clearly more important in the first 30 k because they are just straight and dead flat. The second half was more up and down and twisting and the wind isn't as important here.

The penultimate climb tomorrow is the climb riders who are not top climbers should worry about. If Astana lifts the pace there will not be many together over the top. It will probably come together again a bit but a rider like Amador could lose a lot of time.
