I guess some people don't understand cycling. They would want Paris-Roubaix to end on pav?, the Tour on top of l'Alpe d'Huez, Vlaanderen on the Paterberg, etc. They want spectacle exactly where you'd expect it. That's taking out the game element of sports. We might as well time trial on home trainers.

Some reforms were in the line of making races harder: the criterium-like final laps of Vlaanderen, the extra hill in Milano-San Remo, the hills in Li?ge-Bastogne-Li?ge, the dirt roads in the Giro, etc. It didn't always work out the way one would have thought it would. There used to be some beauty in the last flat 10k mostly downhill after the Muur (Ten Bosse is nothing). It allowed more scenarios: a group that escapes, solo's, headwind, bunch sprint, etc. This is why the reasonably uninspiring road map of Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne has actually brought wonderful racing and big champions (just watch the list of winners, it's madness), and it's not even a classic. Races have a history and grow slowly to perfection. I don't mind them racing in the sand, but sometimes you'd wonder if that's what the sport is about, when the only honourable thing about it is money and a tan, and if the public is utterly disinterested. We've asked the riders and they'd trade that for some cold and a fan club.
