Time trials in grand tours really need something like a virtual head to head using GPS, or at very least more intermediate time checks than there are currently. The last charity run I did in my local park had the same number of intermediate time checks as a GT time trial.

Or 2010 which was an all time awful time trial for a leaders jersey.

He's also obviously lost a Giro jersey on the time trial. Today will be 4 (is that a record).

Amazingly he somehow managed to hold on comfortably in 2012. Yeah I know it was a hilly tt but still.

Individual starts in cross coutry skiing are indeed nicer to follow as there are intermediate checks roughly every 8-10 minutes shown and every 3-5 minutes available. But it's obviously easier with 5 km loop.
