And there was me thinking Thomas is now race leader

But yeah Henao was great today, great to see him climb well again.

Henao is also very inconsistent and today he was great, but usually Thomas is simply better.

THis is true ...Heano could be terrible tomorrow
And Zakarin could be terrible next month

POrte, Contador & Thomas are the GT riders this year

All I can say id Porte & Contdor need to do more

Nope, they are not GT riders at all.

You need to get with the program

Thomas & Porte are both targeting the Tour ...and that is what I meant

Contador says he had a problem with his front mech, stuck in the big ring all the way up the final climb
Correction

Listened again to Contador in English on Eurosport: "in all the climb I haven't the big ring, cannot change", stuck in small chainring

That's a problem on gradients of 4%

yes and that's the reason why contador had to destroy them easily.

WOW. Thanks! This makes a BIG difference on those low gradients, I guess.

Caley Fretz ‏@CaleyFretz 13 min13 minuten geleden
@inrng Given speed, can't really see that mattering. 39/11 not ideal, but plenty of gear. Roughly equivalent to a 53/15.

the Inner Ring ‏@inrng 11 min11 minuten geleden
@CaleyFretz true but he say it cost him on flat "in the kilometre that is almost flat, I take a lot of speed, I go with very hard cadence"

Caley Fretz ‏@CaleyFretz 7 min7 minuten geleden
@inrng Certainly not ideal. And if he was on a 36 (as he is frequently), even worse.

Now I'm wondering if Portal heard it from Berto or if it is something one of the Sky riders noticed.

He didnt really say.. He was really evasive about it.
What was funny is that, while being interviewed by French TV, Richard Virenque straight away asked him a comment on Contador's climb, as if nobody cared about the Sky riders. Portal was a bit surprised :D

I imagine Sky and the French media are not on the best of terms.

hhhhmmm...how can contador beat Froome. He even got beaten by his sky second chair.

Just ride like he did in 2014 and he will easily beat him again
I am a big Bertie fan but IMO I think he's should have retired at the end of 2014.
He just lacks that edge of old. 2014 season form and he would have won a stage like this easy
Its not a good sign for the tour and its no good saying its early days because in 2014 Bertie war destroying everyone in the early season

http://www.procyclingstats.com/race/Volta_Ciclista_a_Catalunya_2014

Against purito on a climb that was prefect for him not Thomas, come on . That his competition that he would blow away on a climb like "that back in the day"

This climb is perfect for track specialist though, he looked fine, no need to overreact imo.
It's amazing how low cycling has descend, now we have 15km climbs perfect for track specialists.

it's still early in the season, and Thomas still hasn't reached Froome's or Porte's hate levels

..early days :D

I haven;t had time to read every post but the excuses seem to be in the main part

-something wrong with Contadors gears
-the climb was not hard enough
-the climb was not steep enough
-Contador looked great (emm but he didn't win?)
-He will annihilate everyone at Pais Vasco

:D :D :D

the funniest part is probably the climb was ok before the stage finished.

You clearly haven't been paying attention. Many people said beforehand that the climb probably would not be hard enough for Alberto to make a difference.

- Specialized bikes suck
- even Sagan could've made it in the top 3
- it looked like a pancake with bumps
- if Contador was not present it would have been a mass sprint won by matthews
- he will

In fairness, 1-4 were all true and most reasonable people knew todays stage wasn't hard enough for him to be able to make a big difference. Today was a fairly predictable outcome. I'd say he looked very good, not great. Of the 3 at the front he was the only one who had made attacks so I expected him to be outsprinted.

Do you really think that he could be fair?

I'd say he's at least as much a "road specialist". By the time he'd won his first Olympic gold medal in 2008 aged 21 or 22, he'd won junior Paris-Roubaix, junior Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne, the Flèche du Sud (also won by such "track specialists" as Alex Zülle and Andy Schleck), podiumed the national road race (beating Steve Cummings among others) and ridden the Giro and the Tour.
