2016 Spring Classics CQ Game

The season must be properly underway, because it is time to launch the CQ Spring Classics Game.

Teams 12 riders, to a budget of 3000 points from the 31 December 2015 CQ download (so you can use your research from the main or youth games): this spreadsheet at Dropbox might help.
All riders are available, no distinct doper rules.

Scoring CQ points gained in following 20 one day races:
27/2 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad - 1.HC
28/2 Sud Ardeche - 1.1
28/2 Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne - 1.1
28/2 Drome Classic - 1.1
28/2 GP di Lugano - 1.HC
2/3 Le Samyn - 1.1
5/3 Strade Bianche - 1.HC
16/3 Nokere Koerse - 1.HC
17/3 GP Nobili Rubinetterie - 1.HC
19/3 Milano - Sanremo - 1.WT1
23/3 Dwars door Vlaanderen - 1.HC
25/3 E3 Harelbeke - 1.WT2
27/3 Gent - Wevelgem - 1.WT2
3/4 Ronde van Vlaanderen - 1.WT1
6/4 Scheldeprijs - 1.HC
10/4 Paris - Roubaix - 1.WT1
13/4 Brabantse Pijl - 1.HC
17/4 Amstel Gold Race - 1.WT2
20/4 La Flèche Wallonne - 1.WT2
24/4 Liège - Bastogne - Liège - 1.WT1

This comprises all of the European 1.WT and 1.HC races, and any 1.1 race that had at least 6 WT teams last year (only four, of which Kuurne-B-K had 9 and the other three each had 7: none of the others that fit the other criteria had more than 3), during the Classics season as defined by the period from Omloop to Liege. Since last year's game, Nobili-Rubinetterie has been added (I think I had missed it's HC status change last year), Nokere Koerse is upgraded to HC, and the Classica Corsica seems to have disappeared after just 1 year.

Entering

PM to me either at CN or at Velorooms by the beginning of the Omloop on Saturday 27 February (probably about 10:45 am GMT)
Please submit names in CQ format (easily cut and pasted from the dropbox spreadsheet above) with nothing else on each line. I doubt I will pay any real attention to entries until next weekend as I will be away for a few days, so no hurry.

Good luck to all.

Entries as of 9:30 on Monday evening: about 4 1/2 days to go.

Between those 8 teams we have 64 different riders chosen, of whom 2 are on more than half the teams, and 45 are unique picks.

29 teams in, still a few hours to go, for North Americans, Australians, and early-rising Europeans. I believe the start time for the Omloop is 10:45 (GMT): that is your cut-off.

People are getting better at this: I haven't had to refer any selections back to their manager yet for being over budget or wrong number of riders. And thanks to all for proper name formatting (only one misspelling so far!)

119 riders selected: 3 on at least half the teams, one almost ubiquitous, 66 unique picks.

2 more entries overnight, one about 10 minutes before the race started, but I had an unplanned lie-in, so it didn't matter: 31 teams in all, and here they are. Alphabetical order of teams, price order of riders within each team, and * to indicate a unique pick.

The Collective Wisdom team has a popularity index of 158, and almost by definition, no unique picks.

Big Budget selections
3000 point budget for 12 riders makes for an average of 250 points/rider, but who wants a team full of average riders?

No very expensive, very popular riders this time,
Who spent big on whom? Any riders dearer than Cancellara (449 points, or 150% of budget) listed. * again shows unique picks.

Van Avermaet* (1685) Just some Guy, who also has Dan Martin(526)
Degenkolb* (1412) Guilhermo Ribeiro, who also has Rui Costa* (1108), hoping for remarkable recovery from the car crash.
Gilbert* (1301), AG
Stybar (952) Armchair, Los Brolin and Trudgin (also Roelandts* (703))
Benoot (872) Amis Velo, Comodoro, Del1962 (those 3 also have D Martin, and Del also has Demare(464)), GeraintTooFast (also has Vanmarcke(600), LukasCPH (also Drucker* (503)), Togo95
Lampaert*(724) Scrool07
Vanmarcke (600), GeraintTooFast as named above, but also with B'baas (also Bole*(475)), GPBlanco, Murrjt, Search, Tom-Jelte (those 4 all also having D Martin), Joelsim, Josedin, LeadBelly, Madrazo, Rote Laterne, Vladimir (has Demare as well)
Kreuziger*(552) and Rosa* (507) both in Flo's team
D Martin (526) Several already named, also Kazistuta (also with Demare), Asdfgh101, DJW and MellowVelo
Breschel*(452) for Not My Circus
And the answer to the earlier question, "who wants a team full of average riders?" seems to be DJSprtsch, who has no-one dearer than Cancellara in his side.

Taking Cancellara as the definition of average is, I concede, open to challenge.

Im surpriced so relatively few has picked Vanmarcke. Was expecting him to be on almost every team. He is the expensive rider that normally has by far most of his seasonpoints made in the specific races of this game and last season he even underperformed and were unlucky. A not unlikely superclassicseason by Stybar, Benoot that had huge improvement-potential or Dan Martin that normally only has FW and LBL to shine (but will very likely do so and become a good choise there) were options too, but for me Vanmarcke was fairly obvious. But ofcourse not picking him and going for one of the other options might be a good way to win the game should Vanmarcke dissapoint or puncture too much again. And so far so good for the Benoot-pick.

Personally I was mostly in doubt between Boom (chose him as the safer choise) and Stannard costing almost the same for one spot and then for the last 3 spots that went to Gatto, Van Lerberghe and Offredo. Could have been riders like Oss, Rowe, Elmiger, Phinney, Waeytens, Kittel (only rides Scheldeprijs so not much risk skipping him even if he is lilkely to win and will be a fine pick because of that), Gaviria, Stuyven, Pozzato and Devenyns too. Ended up with Gatto and Van Lerberghe a bit with the heart but also since Offredo for me was the most obvious cheap choise and those just fitted perfectly with the points alongside him.

Day 1, a double header to start
No-one ever looks forward to the Sud Ardeche race as the real beginning of the season, but it usually happens on the day that many consider to be that annual landmark.

It will not be much looked back either in this game, except perhaps by Murrjt:
VAKOC Petr 80 points 1 team (Murrjt)
ARREDONDO MORENO Julian David 12 pts 1 team (Search)
VICHOT Arthur 5 5 teams

The main event, however, was the Omloop,
VAN AVERMAET Greg 140 1 (Just Some Guy)
BENOOT Tiesj 72 6 (Amis Velo, Comodoro, Del1962, GeraintTooFast, LukasCPH, Togo95)
ROWE Luke 62 4 (DJSprtsch, DJW, NotMyCircus, Scrool07)
PETIT Adrien 42 12
STUYVEN Jasper 30 9
LADAGNOUS Matthieu 26 1
VAN ASBROECK Tom 12 1
and 8 other riders getting 5 to 9 points, for up to 5 teams.

Top scoring teams in the Omloop:
1 AmisVelo 144 (Benoot, Petit, Stuyven)
1 Togo95 144 (Benoot, Petit, Stuyven)
3 GeraintTooFast 140 (Benoot, Petit, Ladagnous)
3 JustSomeGuy 140 (Van Avermaet)
5 DJW 134 (Rowe, Petit, Stuyven)
6 Comodoro 119 (Benoot, Petit, Van Der Sande)
7 Scrool07 104 (Rowe, Petit)
8 DJSprtsch 97 (Rowe, Stuyven)
9 LukasCPH 80 (Benoot, Gatto)
10 Murrjt 72 (Rowe, Stuyven)
10 Del1962 72 (Benoot)

The combination of top in France and joint 10th in Belgium is enough to make Murrjt our first overnight leader:
1 Murrjt 152
2 Togo95 149
3 AmisVelo 144
4 GeraintTooFast 140
4 JustSomeGuy 140
6 DJW 134

Day 2: A three headed beast

In France, the Drome Classic was somewhat of a repeat of yesterday's Sud Ardeche, much to Murrjt's delight.

VAKOC Petr 80pts 1 team (Murrjt)
VICHOT Arthur 40 5 (B'baas, LeadBelly, NotMyCircus, Search, Togo95)
GASPAROTTO Enrico 9 4 (Kazistuta, MellowVelo, Rote Laterne, Vladimir)

Lugano is an HC race, so more points available, but its field is not filled with the riders most of us look for here, so it has rather less impact on the game, except on the score of our only newcomer to the game: B'baas had both GAVAZZI Francesco (11 points) and BOLE Grega (5) as unique picks.

And so to the main event of the weekend, Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne:
STUYVEN Jasper 140points 9 teams
GROENEWEGEN Dylan 62 2
WISNIOWSKI Lukasz 54 1
DEMARE Arnaud 22 3
PETIT Adrien 15 12
KREDER Raymond 12 1
OSS Daniel 9 5
VAN LERBERGHE Bert 8 3
VAN ASBROECK Tom 7 1
VANDENBERGH Stijn 5 15
FENN Andrew 5 1

The top race scorers were:
The top nine all had Stuyvens: Kazistuta being the best of the rest. Here is who else got them points today:
1 DJSprtsch 207 (Groenwegen and Vandenburgh)
2 DJW 169 (Petit, Oss and Vandenburgh)
3 Togo95 164 (Petit and Oss)
4 Vladimir 162 (Demare)
5 AmisVelo 160 (Petit and Vandenburgh)
6 Murrjt 155 (Petit)
7 Leadbelly 153 (Van Lerberghe and Vandenburgh)
8 Search 145 (Vandenburgh)
9 Flo 140
10 Kazistuta 91 (Wisniowski, Demare and Petit)

So after 2 days and 5 races, the standings are:
1 Murrjt 387
2 Togo95 353
3 DJSprtsch 304
3 AmisVelo 304
5 DJW 303
6 Search 237
7 Leadbelly 228
8 Vladimir 210
9 Flo 187
10 GeraintTooFast 155
11 Kazistuta 147
12 JustSomeGuy 140
13 Comodoro 134
14 NotMyCircus 133
15 Bbaas 126
16 Scrool07 124
17 Del1962 94
18 Josedin 81
19 MellowVelo 80

28 Joelsim 5
29 TomJelte 0
29 AG 0
29 GuilhermeRibeiro 0
CollectiveWisdom 232

More than 25% of the races gone already, but the major point races are still to come: my team might yet make triple figures.
Next up: Le Samyn on Wednesday.

Race 6: Le Samyn

The race was more impressive than our picking: Terpstra was prohibitively expensive, but the unselected Scott Thwaites has taken enough points in the first half a week of the game to have been worth a place on many teams.

But we didn't miss the point earners entirely:
SENECHAL Florian 40pts 5 teams (Armchair, Asdfgh101, Flo, GPBlanco, Vladimir)
GROENEWEGEN Dylan 28 2 (DJSprtsch, Los Brolin)
BYSTRØM Sven Erik 24 3 (DJW, Flo, Leadbelly)
WYNANTS Maarten 16 1 (Search)
MARTINELLI Davide 5 2 (Del1962, GPBlanco)

So the points earned are:
1 Flo 64
2 GPBlanco 45
3 Vladimir 40
3 Armchair 40
3 Asdfgh101 40
6 DJSprtsch 28
6 LosBrolin 28
8 DJW 24
8 Leadbelly 24
10 Search 16
11 Del1962 5
12 Everyone else, including Collective Wisdom 0

Standings:
DJSprtsch is 3rd rather than joint third, DJW moves to 4th, Vladimir came third on the day but still loses one place to Flo, and GPBlanco, Los Brolin and Asdfgh101 all move up at least 3 places, but within the lower half of the early table.

1 Murrjt 387

Race 7: Strade Bianche
The most popular rider in the game makes the three who did not pick him suffer:
CANCELLARA Fabian 140pts 28 teams (out of 31)
STYBAR Zdenek 84 3 (Armchair, Los Brolin and Trudgin)
VAKOC Petr 54 1 (Murrjt)
VAN AVERMAET Greg 48 1 (Just Some Guy)
BENOOT Tiesj 36 6 (Amis Velo, Comodoro, Del1962, GeraintTooFast, LukasCPH, Togo95)

MOSCON Gianni 8 2 (Joelsim, Kazistuta)
STUYVEN Jasper 5 9
BOLE Grega 5 1
GRIVKO Andriy 5 1

Points on the day
Maybe I should just stop the game here, and declare it to have been the CQ Strade Bianche game. I won't bother naming Cancellara as a point earner in the breakdown of the top teams' hauls, take it as read.

1 Armchair 236 (Stybar and Oss)

Standings
My magnificent and glorious victory on the day makes me the fastest riser as well, but humility kicks back in when I admit that the height I've reached is only 14th. Vakoc is still maintaining Murrjt's lead, and although it might look as though the first two have already opened daylight between themselves and the rest of the field, things can change quickly when we get the bigger points from WT races.

If I had known that GP Industria was going to get so many WT teams entering when I posted the game details, it would have made the list.

Of course, the picks we have made would have been altered by the major strategic implications of this, but as it stands, it would only have made a difference to 2 teams:
LukasCPH has the winner, Simon Clarke, and would have had 80 points,
Bbaas has both Fedi (2nd) and Gavazzi (5th), and would also have got 80 points.

If I keep the same criteria next year, then this point fest will be part of next year's game.

Race 8:Nokere Koerse

Timothy Dupont, had anyone been able to predict his win, would have instantly been a worthwhile pick with 140 points for a 198 point payout, and Halvorsen could have been in your team with no expenditure and with 84 points will outscore many of our pricier selections.

But in the realm of who we did actually pick, we find these:
GROENEWEGEN Dylan 72pts 2 teams (DJSprtsch and Los Brolin)
MOSCON Gianni 36 2 (Joelsim and Kazistuta)
VAN LERBERGHE Bert 22 3 (B'baas, LeadBelly and Madrazo)
VAN KEIRSBULCK Guillaume 12 4

Everyone else drew a blank today.

The only meaningful change in standings is Groenewegen lifting DJSprtsch from 5th to 2nd,but the big points start on Saturday in San Remo, that should really shift this table around.

This should start to get interesting now. My team for MSR is Vichot, Cance, Howard, Offredo, Vanendert, Oss. Not great, but if Howard does something noteworthy, I wouldn't be annoyed. Maybe Oss could get freedom to attack, but I doubt it.

Race 9: Milan-San Remo

The new top two, Vladimir and Kazistuta, were respectively 9th and 11th before this race, while 5th placed Del1962 was previously 17th. That 17th spot is now occupied by Trudgin, who had an ever larger jump, from 30th. The other team getting 200+ points today, Joelsim, had an 8 place rise to 16th.

Next up: Dwars door Vlaanderen on Wednesday.

Race 10: Dwars door Vlaanderen

The top three were presumably deemed too expensive to buy: Pozzato lives, and is one of the best percentage scorers selected at the halfway stage of the game.

Standings

On the one hand, that lead is 27% more than 2nd place, and a convincing lead. On the other hand, that margin could be overturned by one monument win. Trudgin is biggest riser for the second round in a row: Geraint also nudges into the top 10, DJSprtsch and Del1962 swapping places is the highest position in which there is any change.

Race 11: E3
A World Tour race, therefore lots of 5 pointers, but as with the race on Tuesday, the main points were taken by riders too expensive for anyone to choose.

But the points we did garner today are as follows:

Standings
10th on the day (through Cancellara, Stuyven and Vanmarcke) was sufficient to maintain Vladimir's lead, but plenty of change behind him. The top three on the day are now 2nd, 4th and 3rd respectively, and 4th on the day (Togo) falls from 4th to 5th overall. Amis Velo moves into the top ten; Trudgin, after big rises on the last two races, makes way for him with the biggest drop today, and Madrazo and Josedin share the honour of being highest climbers today.

Murrjt and Kazistuta, previously 6th and 7th, now share third place, and Search replaces Amis Velo in the top 10. Rote Laterne makes the biggest rise of the day (9 spots to 15th), Flo suffers more than anyone else with a 7 place drop.

Next Race is the Ronde next Sunday, but I might be late updating, as I will be away from home. I experimented with doing this on my tablet, but gave in, so it depends on whether there is a laptop available at my mother's.

WoW :D
Very happy that I took the time to create a team for this :p
Key success factors so far is keeping Demare from the standard CQ game and adding Stuyven that was cut late from my long list for the year long CQ game. I doubt that my team is strong enough to keep the lead through the Ardennes but Sep and Spartacus should hopefully keep me in the lead for a couple of weeks more :D
And thanks Armchair for your continous updates!

Standings
Although he had no one else in the top 30, Vladimir had the Cancellara/Vanmarcke pairing, so holds onto the lead with a margin approximately halved. Leadbelly was second before the Ronde, and second on the Ronde. However, Murrjt and DJW have far more scoring potential in the Ardennes (they both have both Martin and Gerrans), so it might not be the two-horse race it appears at the moment.
Madrazo's reward for being top scorer is a place in the top ten (a status also attained by Josedin) and a share in the largest rise of the day with Tom-Jelte: the biggest fall of the day was Del1962. Kazistuta fell from joint 3rd to 7th, which allowed DJSprtsch, DJW and Geraint TooFast to move up one place each.
