Yeah, probably it would have been the best strategy ( someone like 2012 Purito could pull that off against this Skytrain, he'd still loose a huge amount of time in the ITT but it would work pretty well in the mountains), but he won 2 Monuments by attacking before the bigger favourites, he probably hoped that the others wouldn't chase him down or feared that Froome's big attack would drop him.

Carefully measured? Two rivals for the podium are off the back, one is up the road, and he decides to lose a lot of time by softpedaling with the yellow jersey. Didn't make any sense at all.
