2016 Vuelta CQ Game

Time for the last of these games for this year:

Team of exactly nine riders all of whom must be in the race.
Budget Budget will be 3500 points. If you don't leave your team until the last moment, I'll be able to warn you of errors and give you an idea of what substitutions I would make unless you make your own. The sooner you enter, the more time you will have to think again if necessary.

Price of riders
CQ current score as at 14th August, with points accumulated over 12 months leading up to that date, for which the update file that CQ released on Monday 15th will be considered definitive.
There is a Dropbox spreadsheet of riders likely to participate and their prices for the game, and a facility for checking the team total.

Submitting your team
By personal message to me, either here or at Velorooms.
Please send the team with names formatted as per CQ. (Surname[space]Forename and nothing else: Spanish/Portuguese names need particular care. It makes an enormous difference to the efficiency of adding teams. If you use the dropbox spreadsheet it will be a simple copy and paste job.

Deadline
The start of the race, which I believe to be Saturday 20th May at 17:25 (UK time)

Scoring
Points issued according to the points tables of CQ (column GT2). Note there are no points issued for the young rider category.

This is also, for those who have been having a go at all of my short CQ games this year, the deciding element of the Four Seasons title.

Well, then I think I will submit a team for this game too ;)

11 teams in so far, 43 different riders selected, of whom 22 are unique picks, and 3 are in more than half the teams.

Still plenty of time to make your selection: I believe that the dropbox selector sheet in the OP is now complete with all starters, barring last minute changes.

A flurry of entries last night: now 20 teams in, 58 different riders nominated, with 24 of them unique picks.

3 riders are on more than half the teams, and only 3 different riders costing more than twice the average spend (ie >777) so far, with no-one taking more than one of them.

About 30 hours to go...

Early hours of Saturday morning, 33 teams in, 78 riders selected, 33 unique picks, 4 on more than half the teams.

5 different expensive riders selected: 2 teams have doubled up on these, one has opted for no expensive member.

About 15 1/2 hours from the timestamp on this post for your entries.

So here we go!

46 teams, 91 riders: here is how they are spread out.
(Alphabetical order of teams, Price order of riders)
Asterisks indicate unique picks (there are 31 of them)
Hash mark indicates substitution for non-competing rider (just one case of this)

#: Capt Cavman had named John Degenkolb, a non-entrant in the Vuelta, in his team. My principle in such cases (apart from letting the manager know as soon as I can and hoping they rejig their team) is to replace the non-contestant with the next most expensive member of the same team, which is why Ludvigsson is now part of that team.

Riders in bold make up the Collective Wisdom team: Restrepo having to b brought in in place of the rather more popular Kruijswijk to keep within budget.

I have, in recent editions, been making up an analysis of teams on the basis of the expensive riders chosen, because normally there has been a big spread of tactics identifiable by picking out riders who cost at least twice the average spend.

This time around, it will tell us very little, as 32 teams have only Contador in the 777+ price bracket.
3 of the Contadorists have a second high priced rider: Leadbelly and Geraint Too Fast link him with Chaves, while LightBing combines Contador with his unique pick of Brambilla.

Of the 11 teams that do not have a Contador foundation, Crevaison, DJW and Josedin have gone for Chaves, NairoQ and Vladimir for Quintana, Amis Velo for Froome and ChrisDK for Gilbert. Which leaves four teams with a much wider spread of their budgets, having eschewed all the expensive riders: Bicycle Boy, Carlos Algatrensig, Hayabusa and Vredeling.

Stage 1 TTT

Green points
These are the guaranteed points: stage points and red jersey wearer points. They can't be taken away (except for doping), so it does not matter whether the rider reaches Madrid. They are not the main competition, but there will be a table most days, because it avoids the extreme volatility of the main game in the early stages. If you want to take pride in your standing, feel free.

Red points
This is the main classification, what I previously referred to as the projected points, because it is made up of the points from stage points and red jersey wearer (as in the red sect in the red section), but also the GC points, and points for the top ten in points and mountains classifications, as if the race were to finish today. This table is very volatile, especially after the more decisive stages, but it settles down towards the end of the race, and this is the main title.

This first set of standings should not be considered to be much of an indicator, it is useful for my spreadsheet to be tested. There are two reasons not to read too much into it: it is predicated upon standings like Puccio being in second place in GC, which no-one expects in 3 weeks time, and also because the CN race report has many positional errors, like Van Garderen being in 142nd place rather than 22nd, but (for reasons of spreadsheet format) that is the results service I am dependent on.

That being said, for what it is worth, the very temporary standings are:

Red points
This took ages: CN are not being consistent with the way they give riders' names in their results tables, which plays havoc with my spreadsheet.
It's not worth showing projected points as a change from yesterday, as so many of yesterday's standings were wrong. This is, I believe, accurate, but a long way away from a confident indicator of final positions.

Nice to see a newcomer to our games at the top of the table, no matter how provisional it is.

Stage 3 First hilltop finish.

Bad day for our two most popular picks: Lopez becomes a stage hunter at best, and Contador leaves himself with more ground to make up.

Changes today

For those unfamiliar, this shows the main changes in projected points on the day. Because they are projections of what would happen if these wer final position, scores can be negative, if a rider slips down the GC or the Point or Mountain classifications. I only show the bigger changes each day, and only those riders that have been chosen by managers in the game.

Standings
Many riders have moved much nearer to their realistic GC position, causing huge changes in our positions. 17 teams have a change of at least ten places since stage 2. For example, the selection of Rojas, whose rather unrealistic second place in GC yesterday had ChrisDK at the top of the table, makes for a dramatic tumble as he falls rapidly to a more realistic GC position, but Chris' 23 place fall pales compared to the 31 place rise of Rote Laterne. Rote Laterne has however, like Murali and Crevaison, lost one of his major investments in Warren Barguil.

Thanks for all the hard work ArmchairCyclist. Nice game. Even nicer to be competing with the best at the moment.

Sorry for the delay: household internet down last night.

Stage 4

I suspect that we might get quite a few of these: breakaway wins with riders that few of us chose, so very little happening on the Green points, but some unfortunate rider having a GC catastrophe (or, less often, a great day making someone storm up the rankings) shaking up the red points a bit.

Despite his massively biggest score of the day,Bicycle Boy is not the highest riser on the day: Trudgin (11 spots) and Hayabusa (9) move up more quickly than Bicycle Boy or Vladimir (who matches BB's 7 place rise).

With Kruijswijk out, I'm out of the game too I guess.

That, of itself, is not necessarily fatal to your chances: our Giro game winner had invested 1100 points in Landa, who DNFed.

That said, your best placed rider in GC is 18th, so I wouldn't consider you to have a favourite's chance.
