2017-19 Emerging riders CQ Game

Page 3 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
Year 2 Month 8/9 7th August to 30th September (2 months together; I was rather busy with the Vuelta game at the beginning of Sept: I think I had intended doing a mid Sept update, but that didn't happen)

Some very big scores for some of our most popular riders, and for a couple of unique picks too.

MAS NICOLAU Enric 474 (2nd in Vuelta GC, with stage win and some other points) for 27 teams
SCHACHMANN Maximilian 372 (4th in BinckBank tour, 3rd in Deutschland Tout, both with stage points, 3rd in Euro & 11th in World ITTs, World TTT win) 23 teams
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro 226 (Burgos GC win, with a stage win and 2nd, and 6th in l'Avenir) for Comodoro
MOLANO BENAVIDES Juan Sebastian 209 (GC win and stage points in Tour of China I, and stage win in the sequel) for Jakob747

Standings

The top is a tight battle: Cordi moves up to second, and Jakob from 5th to third, pushing Squire off the podium. Hugo Koblet moves up 3 in the top ten, and Flo gets into that elite, while the top scorer for this session, Josedin, must share the best mover plaudits with Del1962 and Kryvo (4 spots each)

Year 2 Month 10/11 1st October to 18th November (and therefore effectively to the end of the season) It didn't seem worth doing an end of October update if that left only a handful of November races to make a separate job out of. Though I don't think waiting for the end of Tour of Fuzhou really made much difference.

MADOUAS Valentin 134 points (Paris-Bourges win, 5th in Paris-Tours) for Kazistuta and Leadbelly.
CAVAGNA Rémi 123 (4th in Tour of Guangxi) for 16 teams

Standings

Collective Wisdom team is again the table topper, but of the real teams, Blues in the Bottle has been top since the end of July, and behind him Jakob reaches 2nd place and a suspiciously round score. HugoKoblet, The Asian, Flo and ValvPiti all are going the right way in the top ten, but only by one place each: only Murrjt manages to move 2 places up in a table whose stability defies its closeness.

End of Year 2

Najar's disqualification from the Vuelta a San Juan brings bonuses to those who picked Ganna (14 points for 22 teams), Cavagna (5 points for 16 teams) and Narvaez (1 point for one team), and so the adjusted end of Year 2 table is:

1 Blues_in_the_Bottle 10097
2 Cordi333 10008
3 Jakob747 10000

5 HugoKoblet 9855

Ganna's end of season bonus was enough to have Cordi reclaim 2nd place.

The best scores only this year were
1 Blues_in_the_Bottle 6247
2 Vladimir 6174
3 Cordi333 6124
4 Jakob747 6072
5 HugoKoblet 6006
6 Squire 5989
7 Flo 5932
8 TheAsian 5823
9 AmisVelo 5803
10 Hakkie2 5761
CollectiveWisdom 6035

Vladimir will rue his poor first year (18th in year 1), while Madrazo (1st a year ago, now 16th) will wonder what his selection have done with the apparent talent they had. Blues in the Bottle had been a humble 8th a year ago.

Thus far, the best possible team would be:
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley 1896 30
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio 1189 12
MAS NICOLAU Enric 1182 27
SCHACHMANN Maximilian 998 23
JAKOBSEN Fabio 895 0
HOFSTETTER Hugo 801 1
GUERREIRO Ruben Antonio Almeida 772 16
VAN DER HOORN Taco 730 0

SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro 719 1
MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe 713 16
MASNADA Fausto 662 0
CERNY Josef 658 0

GAUDU David 651 34
STRAKHOV Dmitry 628 0
BALLERINI Davide 611 0

MADOUAS Valentin 594 2
HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose 584 2
CAVAGNA Rémi 579 16
for a total of 14862 (Blues in the Bottle has 67.9% of this)

The Collective Ignorance team, those none of us picked, such as Jakobsen, Van der Hoorn and Masnada, would have a total thus far of 15233

Five riders have still not managed to gain a point, while our second most popular pick in this edition, Albanese, has still to justify his hype.

Year 3, Month 1 to 3rd February

The riders who will really make a difference should be ready for some important results this year.

Of those selected, the top starters to the year have been:

GIBBONS Ryan 144 (4th in CEGORR, 11th in TDU) for DJW
HAMILTON Chris 131 (6th in TDU, 16th in CEGORR) 6 teams
GUERREIRO Ruben Antonio Almeida 122 (8th in TDU, 15th in CEGORR) 16
SCHULTZ Nicholas 116 (2nd overall, and a stage win, in Herald Sun race, and nationals 19th) for GPBlanco
HAMILTON Lucas 93 (6th in Herald Sun Tour, 19th in TDU, 8th in Aussie Nat's) for 18Valve and Jakob747
HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres 73 for ValvPiti
MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe 50 16
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio 48 12

This month:
1 DJW 472 (Gibbons, C Hamilton, Guerreiro)

Standings
Our leader is one of the month's highest scorers, and increases his lead from less than 100 to more than 200. Cordi drops 2 places, allowing Squire on to the podium. The Asian and Flo also move in the right direction among the top ten, while DJW gets a 5 place rise through having the three best performing riders (among those selected, anyway: Chris Harper outscored them all) of the month.

As I said in the update of the game now starting year 2, the March update may be slightly (hopefully only slightly) delayed because of the first races in the Spring Classics game.

Here is the spreadsheet, with the same provisos about the way January updates work.

Year 3, Month 2 4th February to 3rd March
Some popular riders making a decent start to the season (although Pogacar did better than any of them, and Velasco better than all but one, and we didn't pick up on them 2 years ago)

GAUDU David 189 (3rd in GC and 2 stages of UAE tour, 6th in Tour La Provence) for 34 (out of 35) teams
MADOUAS Valentin 96 (2nd in both Drome and Adeche, 8th in Etoile de Besseges) for Katistuta and Leadbelly
MAS NICOLAU Enric 99 (4th in Volta ao Algarve) 27 teams
FRANKINY Kilian 95(7th in Laiguelia, 6th in Haut Var) for 22
HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres 92 for ValvPiti
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro 91 for Comodoro
GESBERT Elie 77 for Armchair Cyclist, Kazistuta, Madrazo
GIBBONS Ryan 76 for DJW
MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe 74 for 16

This month:
1 Togo95 776 (Gaudu, Mas, Frankiny, Martinez)
2 ValvPiti 722 (Gaudu, Mas, Frankiny, Higuita, Martinez)
3 Hakkie2 705 (Gaudu, Mas, Frankiny, Martinez)

Standings
Collective Wisdom would retake the lead if I allowed it to, as our leader has an indifferent month. Jakub holds 2nd, but Cordi moves back to 3rd. Hakkie and ValvPiti each move three places up the top ten, and into real contention for the podium.

Year 3 Month 3 4th to 31st March

I must start keeping some sort of log of the most notable wins achieved while still eligible for this game: winning Paris Nice must be right up there. If I have sometimes wondered here how people predicted the emergence of those who were rare picks, perhaps I should also question what made 5 contestants think that there were 18 riders more likely to succeed than Egan Bernal...

BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley 454 (Win Paris-Nice, 3rd in Catalunya) 30 teams
SCHACHMANN Maximilian 291 (GP Larciano win, Stage win, 2 podiums and 12th on GC in Catalunya) 23 teams
BOL Cees 175 (Nokere Koerse win. 11th in De Panne) for Josedin, Leadbelly, Squire and Vladimir
HAMILTON Lucas 143 (Settimana Coppi e Bartali win and stage points) for 18Valve and Jakob747
MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe 115 (stage win, 2nd in Points comp, and GC points in Paris-Nice) 16
HOFSTETTER Hugo 111 (5th in both Drenthe and Nokere) for Scrool07
NOMMELA Aksel 93pts 1 team

Hopefully there will be an update sometime around the end of the Spring Classics/Start of the Giro: a lot of games going on...

Year 3, month 4 1st to 28th April

Schachmann has been one of the stars of the Spring season, and is 5th in the 2019 CQ list.

SCHACHMANN Maximilian 559 (3 stage wins and overall in Itzulia, 3rd in Liege, 5th in both Amstel and Fleche) 23 teams
LAMBRECHT Bjorg 278 (4th in Fleche, 5th in Brabantse Pijl, 6th in Amstel) 7 teams
VENDRAME Andrea 220 (TroBro win, Finisterre 2nd, stage win and top ten GC in Circuit de la Sarthe) 8
SIVAKOV Pavel 214 (GC and stage wins in Tour of the Alps) 5
MCNULTY Brandon 139 6
RESTREPO VALENCIA Jhonatan 132 20
SWIRBUL Keegan 130 1
GAUDU David 128 34
(but none of us got other big scorers this month, like Masnada, Jakobsen, Pogacar and Asgreen)

This month:
Amis Velo got 7 of the eight riders who broke the 100 point barrier this month, with one of them as a unique pick.

Standings

The top three remains as it was, but the margins are very tight: 12 points in more than 13000 divide the top two, and 3rd is only 21 further back. Amis Velo manages an 8 place jump into 4th place: remarkable to see such a significant move at this stage of the game. 18 Valve also breaks into the top ten, and Hugo Koblet moves up closer to the podium too.

Who will be top by the next update? (shortly after the Giro)

Year 3 Month 5 (29th April to 2nd June)

2 1/2 years ago, Richard Carapaz left 2/3 of the entrants to this game unimpressed as to his future prospects: now he has won a GT. It's only 2 months ago that I suggested that Bernal's Paris Nice win was probably the most auspicious by a rider in the emerging riders games, but that is now out of the window.

So who did you pick instead of him? (Me? David Per, who spent the duration of the Giro recuperating from 28th in Banja Luka and preparing for 64th place in the Rund um Koln)

CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio 979 pts (Stage and GC wins in Asturias, 2 stages, GC and 7 days in pink in Giro) 12 teams
GAUDU David 218 (Stage win and 2nd, 5th overall in Romandie) 34
DUNBAR Eddie 195 (3rd in Tour of Yorkshire, 22nd and a stage third in Giro) for Del1962, Togo and Vladimir
HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres 194 (2nd in GC and 2 stage podiums in California) for ValvPiti
BOL Cees 170 (stage wins in California and Norway, 5th on GC in Norway) 4
JANSEN Amund Grøndahl 162 14
SIVAKOV Pavel 157 5
MADOUAS Valentin 114 2

Carapazinos moving up all through the table, except the previous top two, who slip despite having Carapaz, as Cordi and Amis Velo move up from 3rd and 4th to the top two positions. Vladimir and Squire also move up within the top ten, and ValvPiti joins the ten with a 6 place jump that is equalled by GPBlanco and Joelsim.

I hope I can get an early July update out before processing of Tour game entries takes over my time.

Apologies: I see the June update never appeared here. I assume I tried and the forum didn't allow it, and I must have forgotten to try again.

Although the lack of anyone looking for it makes me wonder whether I am wasting my time...

Better late than never

Year 3, Month 6 3-30 June

BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley 422 (GC win at Tour de Suisse, with 3 stage podiums, 2nd in thw Mts classification, and leader points) 30 teams
MERLIER Tim 273 (won National RR and Elfstedenronde) for Comodoro, Rote Laterne and Skidmark
VENDRAME Andrea 206 (5th in each of GP Gippingen, Tour of Slovenia and the national road race champs) 8 teams
JANSEN Amund Grøndahl 160 (National RR win, 2nd in ZLM Tour with a stage win) 14
DUNBAR Eddie 114 (5th in Occitanie, 2nd in both nat champ versions) 3 teams
SCHACHMANN Maximilian 100 23
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro 100 1
BOL Cees 90 4
HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose 82 2
MAS NICOLAU Enric 82 27
CARBONI Giovanni 78 2
GANNA Filippo 76 22
MADOUAS Valentin 75 2

Given his consistency in coming 5th during June, it is disappointing to observe that three unselected riders (Evenepoel, Jakobsen and Philipsen) outscored Vendrame, making him narrowly miss 5th here.

Standings

A fairly small margin, and a mediocre month for the previous leader, means that Amis Velo takes the chance to move into the lead. Vladimir, Hugo and Flo also move one place up among the top ten, while Comodoro is the only manager to get a 2 place rise.

We have already had one GT winner in this game: will we get another in the next month?

The numbers

Year 3 Month 7-8a 1 July to 11 August (and the next update will also be about 1 1/2 months)

How much might a rider do within three years of breaking through? Quite a lot: the most, even.

BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley 842 (1st in Tour de France, with a stage win*, jersey points and more) 30 teams
SIVAKOV Pavel 242 (Tour de Pologne win, and stage 2nd) 5 teams
HINDLEY Jai 179 (Tour de Pologne 2nd, and stage 3rd) for Jakob 747
PADUN Mark 164 (Adriatica Ionica win and stage) for Jakob 747
RIVERA SERRANO Kevin 145 (Sibiu Tour win and stage) Joelsim and ThePirate81
MAS NICOLAU Enric 133 27
HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres 124 1
GAUDU David 120 34
HIRSCHI Marc 112 2
DUNBAR Eddie 92 3

* CQ have given points for the neutralised stage 19

Evenepoel would have been the second highest scorer this month, but he was only 16 when we were picking our teams, so no blame there.

The 5 teams that don't have Bernal are easily identified. The best two unique picks are both Jakob's, and he had Bernal as well.

Standings

In previous versions of the game, there has been little movement in several months towards the end. But not this time...
The top two on the last update had very mediocre scores in this period, allowing Cordi to regain the lead, and Vladimir back on to the podium. 33 months in, and there are only 8 points between the top two teams, and two, maybe three other teams are within striking range. Comodoro, GPBlanco and Ludwigzgz match Cordi's 2 place move.

It could all come down to some very unimportant looking minor placings somewhere. Who do the top teams have who are still racing this year?

To give a temporary answer to my own question, although some startlists (I'm relying on PCS for them) are still very incomplete, and omitting Bernal, Schachmann, Mas, Gaudu and Carapaz, who are on all 4 teams, we have:

Wow, I just caught up on the last 5 months all at once - what a nail biter of a finish! Huge scorers, giant lead changes (such as Amis Velo's leap up the standings in the last few months) and a 4-way race in October of the third year... remarkable. I'll be checking back on this thread frequently. Thanks for all the work and updates AC! Good to see I've finally eked into the top 10 as well on the last update.

Year 3 Month 10 30 September to 27th October

The effective, if not official, end of the game. Most editions of this are wrapped up long before any leaves change colour, but this one has been a bit different, with Cordi and Amis Velo separated by just 8 points after the last update.

Standings (probably final, but not ratified until the end of the year)

Amis Velo, 11th at the beginning of the year, reclaims top spot with the only change of order among the top ten; Vladimir scored best of those who had an outside chance of getting close, making the podium fairly closely gathered; and The Pirate81 gets the final mention for the biggest jump of the month (2 places)

Confirmation of scores, any final adjustments, and some analysis of the numbers in the New Year.

Bernal scores more than 4000 points in the three years of eligibility, and is the third rider to do so who have emerged while CQ rankings have been running. Have you guessed who the two that beat him are?

I had to check 4, one of the two's soon to be former teamate came pretty close.

Although does technically Eric Zabel qualify?

Bernal scores more than 4000 points in the three years of eligibility, and is the third rider to do so who have emerged while CQ rankings have been running.
I think 2 Milan-San Remos and 3 TdF Green jerseys, among other pre-1999 results, mean that he was well and truly emerged before CQ was allocating points.

Year 3, months 11 and 12 28 Oct to 31 Dec

The wrap up of the last couple of months won't take long

BICO Nuno Miguel Alves Matos nabbed 5 points after his retirement by being raised to the last scoring place in Qinghai Lake whenMonsalve was caught out, as a bonus for ThePirate81
AGUIRRE CALPA Hernan Ricardo, and therefore Jakob747, benefits without getting on his bike for the same reason, but the points jump from 14th to 13th is 4 points, rather than the 5 points from 51st to 50th.

Those points are not enough to change the positions of either Pirate or Jakob.

So let's get on with

Amis Velo was 11th at the end of the second year, but his riders really came through in the third year.

46.8% of the total points scored were taken in Year 3, a much higher share than in the 3 previous editions (they averaged out at 40.6%): having the points for winning the Tour de France and the Giro will do that. 21 of us beat the highest Year 3 score for any of the earlier versions of the game.

Rider Scores
As is always the case, a look at the best performing riders shows a mixture of obvious prospects that most went for (although 5 people need to explain why they thought Egan Bernal wouldn't amount to much), those who came through too late for us to have been aware of them, and late bloomers, who few, if any, of us had spotted 3 years ago.

Your best possible team is:
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley 4110 points 30 teams
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio 2406 12
SCHACHMANN Maximilian 2085 23
POGACAR Tadej 2015 0

MAS NICOLAU Enric 1993 27
JAKOBSEN Fabio 1676 0

GAUDU David 1481 34
HOFSTETTER Hugo 1306 1
MASNADA Fausto 1303 0

JANSEN Amund Grøndahl 1302 14
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro 1297 1
MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe 1239 16
PHILIPSEN Jasper 1219 0

GUERREIRO Ruben Antonio Almeida 1139 16
MADOUAS Valentin 1134 2
SIVAKOV Pavel 1128 5
ASGREEN Kasper 1128 0
COSNEFROY Benoit 1103 0

That would have given a manager 29064 points: Amis Velo got 66.4% of the best possible, beaten by Madrazo (69.5%) two years earlier.

Evenepoel was 22nd on the list, despite only having been gaining points for one year. His 952 points would have beaten Bernal's first year in this game by nearly 200 points, and only Bernal did better in Year 2. We should probably expect him to appear in the next table before long. Also just outside the top 18 is the tragic hero of this edition, Bjorn Lambrecht.

Historical top scorers

Bernal is the best scorer over the Emergence years since the game has been going, but I have found (I hope: are there other possible candidates?) the top 20 since CQ have been issuing points.

Valverde (2003-05) 4603
Sagan (2010-12) 4487
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley (2017-190 4110
Quintana (2012-14) 3892
Cunego (2003-05) 3770
Cavendish (2007-09) 3587
Bouhanni (2012-14) 3043
Kittel (2011-13) 2934
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando (2016-18) 2703
Schleck F (2004-06) 2682
Sevilla (1999-2001) 2528
MOSCON Gianni (2016-18) 2525
Boonen (2002-04) 2477
Degenkolb (2010-12) 2452
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio (2017-19) 2406
Van Avermaet (2007-09) 2385
Kreuziger (2007-09) 2343
ALAPHILIPPE Julian (2014-16) 2335
Nibali (2006-8) 2319
ROGLIC Primoz (2015-17) 2313

Apart from Evenepoel, Pogacar will surely join this list next year: he has over 2000 points with another year to score.

Top Players
There have been 4 editions of the game, and some players have been in all of them.
Top ten aggregated scores:

The Collective Wisdom Team
Essentially, the list of the most hyped young riders in December 2016. How did they do?

GAUDU David 34 picks out of 35 1481 points
ALBANESE Vincenzo 32 86
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley 30 4110
MAS NICOLAU Enric 27 1993
RAVASI Edward 26 274
KÄMNA Lennard 23 412
SCHACHMANN Maximilian 23 2085
FRANKINY Kilian 22 414
GANNA Filippo 22 668
POWLESS Neilson 20 704
RESTREPO VALENCIA Jhonatan 20 578
CINK Ondrej 16 125
GUERREIRO Ruben Antonio Almeida 16 1139
MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe 16 1239
CAVAGNA Rémi 16 879
JANSEN Amund Grøndahl 14 1302
MINALI Riccardo 14 544
SCOTSON Miles 13 405

Cink was a forgivable error: he showed enough to suggest that he might have some potential on the road in one year, but then returned to mountain biking. But what happened to the potential everyone seemed to see in Albanese? This wasn't even the only year he made the Collective Wisdom team in this game.

But we picked, between us, 22 riders who have made even less of an impact than Albanese, and 5 of us chose riders who managed not a solitary CQ point in 3 years.

Well done to Mark (Amis Velo's real name: I met him when I used to teach his daughter), those who ran him close, and to the riders who made a decent contribution to our teams. And thanks to all the contestants, and the CQ website.
