2017 Giro CQ game

I have decided to launch this a little earlier than usual. The Giro starts on a Friday, the preceding Monday is a public holiday in many countries, CQ have often not made the weekly download available until later than the usual Monday early evening: there are ways it could have gone a bit pear shaped, so I have decided to use the prices from last Sunday, rather than the Sunday immediately preceding the race as I have normally done. I guess that means that anyone riding in Romandie this week is a bit cheaper than they would have been if I had waited, anyone who was in it last year gets to be slightly dearer.

So although I am launching it now, there is no great need to hurry with your selection: by all means wait until teams are more settled. As previously, there is a spreadsheet which will make sure you have used the appropriate price, avoid you going over budget, and give the right versions of names: here it is at dropbox.

The rest of the intro many of you will be familiar with, but new contestants are very welcome:

Team of exactly nine riders
Budget Budget will be 3500 points. If you don't leave your team until the last moment, I'll be able to warn you of errors: if it is later than my going to bed on Thursday night, I'm unlikely to able to help. If you are over budget, I'll take out the cheapest rider who can be replaced with a cheaper member of his team that will bring you into budget: if you pick someone who is not riding, I'll replace him with the next cheapest of his team, or the next cheapest in the race if there is not one in his team.

Price of riders
CQ score for 12 months to 23rd April, for which the update file that CQ released on Monday 24th will be considered definitive.
There is a dropbox spreadsheet of riders likely to participate and their prices for the game, and a facility for checking the team total.

Submitting your team
By personal message to me, either here or at Velorooms.
Please send the team with names formatted as per CQ. (Surname[space]Forename and nothing else: Spanish/Portuguese names need particular care, as do accents or other diacritics) It makes an enormous difference to the efficiency of adding teams. If you use the dropbox spreadsheet it will be a simple copy and paste job.

I have lodged my team with ChrisDK, the first person to submit a team, and won't change it unless any of them drop out.

Deadline
The start of the race, which I believe to be Friday 5th May at noon (Italian time) (but don't expect any analysis of teams until I get in from work that evening).

Scoring
Points issued according to the points tables of CQ (column GT2). Note there are no points issued for the young rider category.

Entries
will be listed here, hopefully updated daily. If you have not seen your name 24 hours after submitting it, drop me a reminder. If you are on another forum, by all means plug it there.

Good luck to all.

Sorry: I see what you mean. Riders can get stage points, Pink Jersey wearer points, GC points, and points in the Points and KoM categories.

Stage points are safe (unless a disqualification is ruled before the end of the last day) from the day they are won, even if the rider subsequently withdraws. The same is true of leader's jersey points. Clearly, a rider who drops out cannot get points in the classifications in the final analysis.

I will be publishing guaranteed points (only stage and Pink jersey) standings, and projected points (if the Giro were to finish with the GC/points/KoM standings as they currently are) standings after each stage.

Well, I suppose Boonen is probably technically still registered with Quick Step, unlikely as they are to call him up. I edit all riders not on teams in the Giro from the list of prices, I leave the others in case you hear of team changes before I do. I thought it tactful to remove Michele Scarponi: I guess Boonen was not on my mind at the time. I'll try to remember to remove him next time I'm editing it.

At least it is good to know the selector SSheet is being used...

With all the teams except Willier confirmed, and two and half days left before the deadline, we have 15 teams so far. Some have been thrown by the expected selections of Clarke and Cimolai not being confirmed, so I am awaiting some revisions.

2 riders are clear favourites in terms of popularity so far, each on 3/4 of the teams or more: after them, there are only 4 others that are on more than 1/4 of teams. 49 riders have been picked, 23 of them unique picks.

Remember that the race starts on Friday, and the deadline for entries is the waving of that flag in Alghero (12:25 CET): if you don't get your team to me before I go to bed on Thursday night (about midnight UK time), I won't be able to check it.

All the Clarke/Cimolai/failure to count accurately to 9 issues have been addressed.

A few extra teams are in (23 now), but if numbers are going to hold up to previous years I m hoping for a last day rush.

Those 23 teams feature 61 of the 197 riders in the race: 32 of them are unique picks. One is omitted by only 2 teams, one is on nearly 3/4 of teams, a third is also more selected than omitted, and one more is very close to that 50% selection mark. 4 teams combine all 4 of these top picks, but we all know that the popularity of a rider is no guarantee of his success.

Just over 28 hours as of the timestamp on this post to get your teams in: good luck.

The automatic replacements for Ruffoni and Pirazzi according to the game rules above would be Albanese and Andreeta respectively.

I'm guessing that is not the best way of using their points that the 9 teams still affected (some have already contacted me) would choose.

I'll PM the teams involved, and please get back to me as soon as possible with your change.

I guess I can extend the deadline a bit in the circumstances: I think it would it be fair if I said that affected times (but only affected teams) can have until 6pm (UK time) Friday evening, as I won't have a chance to put up team summaries much before that, on condition they do not pick anyone who scores points tomorrow (no restriction on changes before race starts, obviously). Fair?

All the Pirazzi/Ruffoni teams got themselves sorted before the race started, so no need for special dispensations after all.

No new entries after the early hours of this morning, so 46 teams aboard, all with 9 starters.

I'm just in from work: I'll watch the last few km then start putting the analysis together.

Here are our 46 teams, with their hopes of glory. Teams are listed alphabetically, riders within each team from most to least expensive, and unique picks shown with an asterisk.

Rider popularity

There are 195 riders in the race (22x9, minus Astana's non-replacement of Scarponi and two Bardiani fools): 80 of themhave been selected.

Of the 46 teams, how many chose each rider?
(The nine riders in bold are the Collective Wisdom team: to simply take the nine most popular riders would be so wildly over budget as to make comparison with managers' teams meaningless. This combination is slightly below budget at 3404 pts)

Stage 1

Sorry I'm late: spreadsheet instability, evening out, Saturday lie-in, repeated spreadsheet instability, ...

Purple points
No normal person uses the word cyclamen as a colour name in English, and those who do use it to refer to a shade of pink similar to that worn by the race leader. I'm no gardener, but a quick Google images view of cyclamen shows that they come in pink, white, red or a pale lilac shade of purple. That shirt is undeniably purple, and the imperial history of the colour should make all sprinters (and Austrian barodeurs) proud to recognise it as such, so that's what I call it.

So the daily points won that are safe and secure, those for being in the top 10 in any stage (70, 40, 25, 15, 10, 7, 5, 3, 2, 1) and the 18 bonus points for wearing the pink jersey (and that can become equivalent to several stage wins in some editions) are logged under this heading. These are the points that a rider keeps even if he fails to finish.

Top sprinters are expensive, and there are not that many stages that they will get their points on, so any sprinter purchase is a risky one in this game, but it sometimes pays off. And then, of course, there is the possibility that sprinters will be robbed of the points that are available to them by an unlikely leadout man rolling away from the front of the race.

PÖSTLBERGER Lukas 88pts 1 teams (Just Some Guy)
EWAN Caleb 40 0 teams
GREIPEL André 25 0 teams
NIZZOLO Giacomo 15 0 teams
MODOLO Sacha 10 4 teams (LightBing, Scrool07, Search, Torcia86)
SBARAGLI Kristian 7 1 teams (Josedin)
STUYVEN Jasper 5 1 teams (Silver Grenade)
GIBBONS Ryan 3 0 teams
BENNETT Sam 2 3 teams (Search, ThePirate81, Vladimir)
BAUHAUS Phil 1 2 teams (Kazistuta, Yellow Knight)

I'm willing to bet that whatever points Just Some Guy thought he would get from the unique pick of Postleberger, it was not from winning an obvious sprint stage and wearing pink. I'll trust that his recent win of the Spring Classics game was less of a fluke.

(That's not a decision to show the top ten: it's the only teams with points in this category)

Pink points
These are all the points that a rider has in all the categories, so that is the accumulated guaranteed "purple" points, plus the points relevant to his current standings in the GC, and the points and mountains categories. CQ rankings are fairly GC heavy compared to other websites: the top ten get 500, 375, 315, 265, 240, 215, 190, 165, 150 and 135, then down through 66 for 20th, 44 for 30th, 26 for 40th to 16 for 50th and 15 for all other finishers. KoM and Points jerseys score the same as a stage. There are no points here for white jersey, nor for the myriad other minor competitions that the Giro maintains.

I won't list the riders' points each day, but I'll note major point gains or losses by rider: yes, points can be lost (for example Benedetti, a unique pick for Tych23 as a late replacement for Pirazzi, has 70 points at the moment for leading the KoM, but has not gone in the break today, so is likely to fall to about 3rd in that ranking, in which case his score tonight will be 45 less than this morning). After GC relevant stages, esp in the first week or two, there will be very large changes here, but this is the real competition.

(The scores might look impressive, but even if your riders filled places 187 to 195 yesterday you would have 135 points)
