Stage 18 Princess stage (like a queen, but shorter)

Purple points

Sometimes a rider picked as a GC contender turns out to be a sstage hunter, to justify at least some of his cost.

Since Gaviria stopped gaining points, his teams have retained the top 6 spots in this ranking, but 2 of them, those with less mountain support, have dropped to 10th and 12th.

Pink points
Gaps near the top close again without change of positions, apart from the most important position swap there is. But only one team able to gain from that, and one that suffers. Kruijswijk's fall is more significant in our game than Dumoulin's.

Standings

It was not a good day for the leader on the road, but it was in this game. If it looked uncertain that there was a way to shake Dumoulin yesterday, it looks more so the case for Fauniera here.

Of the top 4 plus one other that I posted team details of as top contenders on Monday, Fauniera remains top, but the others have dropped to 8th, 12, 22nd and 42nd.

So which teams and riders now pose a threat to the team that has been top since Kangert's argument with road furniture affected the 5 teams that had been above him at the start of stage 15.

The lead is beyond that which is likely to be made up simply by stage finish points, but after significant top 10 GC variation, the gaps could be tiny.

Landa is ubiquitous, and therefore irrelevant to the battle, and Gaviria will surely not add to his haul.. Fauniera is really only vulnerable if Nibali moves up and Pinot does not, but a repeat today of stage 19 for Dumoulin, or Time Trial overhauling of Quintana, means that that is far from impossible.

If Nibali and Pinot both get improvements in standing ( as in the above two scenarios, but more extreme) then Crevaison will come into play, especially if one of those expensive, one team riders who are currently first and second fall far enough to Zakarin to overtake them and make the podium.

If Nibali moves up, but Pinot stays off the podium, then we are probably looking at Zakarin trying to get 28 seconds from Pinot (on the last 14km today or the time trial) as the battle between Squire and those on the virtual podium as it stands.

I wrote all that without having read of Kruijswijk's DNS today.

That really removes GodChild and Squire from the reckoning: so Pinot is key for Fauniera and Crevaison, Nibali for GPBlanco and Crevaison, and Zakarin for Crevaison. If there is success for Nibali, then stage points still hold the balance.

What was that last sentence in my previous post?

So Kruijswijk loses the 135 projected points for 10th place, to the detriment of 25 teams, and riders below him each move up a bit granting some compensation, mainly to the benefit of Formolo teams.

New top ten, sans Kruijswijk:
1 Fauniera 1740 (holds position)
2 GPBlanco 1642 (holds position)
3 Crevaison 1570 ( up from 5th)
4= Hakkie2 1510 (up from 7th)

Standings with one stage, and one big shake-up, to come

Crevaison leaps from 5th to second, and is the only real challenger, I would suggest, to Fauniera, though I reckon Pinot's win today will have been enough to keep Fauniera safe. Del 1962, Hugo87, Safebet and Leadbelly are new entries to the top ten as the Kruijswijk teams tumble. Scrool07 has the biggest (16 place) rise, and Yellow Knight will gain that honour tomorrow.

The top two will both lose points tomorrow (as Dumoulin overtakes them), and Crevaison has 2 riders vulnerable to being overtaken by Dumoulin. Also in Fauniera's favour is that Pinot overhauling Nibali is neutral to Crevaison (who has both), but advantageous to Fauniera.
But there is a way in for Crevaison, if we were to end up with a Dumoulin-Nibali-Zakarin podium. I'm also assuming that Pozzovivo can hang on to his minute and a half over Mollema, but if that does not happen, that would be a 25 point swing to Crevaison which might bring it into stage points range to decide.

If you want to examine other permutations, here's the spreadsheet.

Final positions

In the end, Fauniera only had one rider overtaken by Dumoulin and Crevaison had two, and so the winning margin more than doubled on the last day. AG, Hakkie2 and Leadbelly have some promotion within the top ten, and Squire replaces Hugo87 to get into the final top 10. Inevitably, Yellow Knight is the Dumoulin-powered top riser of the day, but for the only team with the race winner to end up 35th of 46 (and that with the advantage of 162 pink jersey wearer bonus points), and the only team with the rider 2nd in GC to be only 2 places better off, shows that this was an unusual edition of the game.

Congratulations to Fauniera and rest of the podium, and thanks to all for joining in.

1 place off top 1/3 of the field: better than my usual.

Congrats to the people who did so well.
It was my first shot at the fantasy league game and thoroughly enjoyed throughout the 24 days.(Maybe not when I was at the bottom :) )
Thanks to Armchair Cyclist for conducting this game

Quite fitting with a close finish to mirror the real race..;) ..Kangert could have made the difference but you're always likely to lose at least one guy along the way.

Top ten in my first GT CQ game. Gotta be pleased with that. Hadn't Kruijswijk abandoned it would've been even better, but as Crevaison says, there's always some bad luck to be factored in. At least my strategy proved successful.

Thank you for doing this game and adding to the enjoyment of the Giro, Armchair Cyclist!

Some number crunching:

Best scoring riders:
(at least a stage win worth of points)

The overwhelming favourite to win was simply deemed too expensive by nearly everyone, and the one who did win was several hundred points dearer than riders who most pundits thought had a better chance.
Pinot finished behind Nibali, but gets the podium of point earners through better stage placings. Gaviria and Landa (on plan B) are the main riders whose place points are more important than GC.

Best Possible team
My record for doing this accurately is not good, and if there is a way of getting Excel to work it out definitively I don't know it, so the best I can come up with is:

DUMOULIN Tom
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
LANDA MEANA Mikel
POLANC Jan
PÖSTLBERGER Lukas
FRAILE MATARRANZ Omar
DE PLUS Laurens
PETILLI Simone
PLAZA MOLINA Ruben

for a total of 2248 (and a popularity score that would have been the second lowest)

Not really related to this game, but for the last few GTs I have set up a ninja thread: highest placed rider with no daily top ten placing: it was Hubert Dupont in 19th place.

Small improvements to the Best Possible Team:

Landa
Polanc
Postlberger
Fraile
Rolland
Dumoulin
Zakarin
Cataldo
Kozontchuk

This team would have scored 2322 points. A special mention goes to Postlberger who was also part of the best possible spring classics team.
