2017 Tour de France CQ game

Many of you will be expecting this: here it is.

What you need to do
*Choose 9 riders taking part in the Tour.
*Ensure that the total "cost" of your team is 4000 pts or fewer, using the CQ ranking over 12 months to 25th June as the price for each rider.
*PM your team to me, using the CQ name format (surname, then forename, nothing else, no team no price), by start of the race (15:15 German time on Sat 1 July)
*Check the list of entries at the end of this opening post, and nudge me if your name does not appear within 24 of submitting it.
*Hope that your team gains more CQ points during the race than any other.
*Enjoy.

What I'll do
*I'll check that your 9 riders are taking part, and that the team is within budget. If you submit the team in good time, I'll let you know if there are problems with your selection.
*If you are over budget, I'll take out the cheapest rider who can be replaced with a cheaper member of his team that will bring you into budget: if you pick someone who is not riding, I'll replace him with the next cheapest of his team, or the next cheapest in the race if there is not one in his team.
*I'll assist you in collating a team by putting up a spreadsheet on dropbox with the riders named to start and their price: Here it is, with apologies for the delay.
*I'll smile gratefully and be relieved if you submit your name in the proper CQ format: I will gnash my teeth and curse quietly if you don't, and might ask you to send it again, especially if you are an old hand at the game.
*I'll allocate points as issued by CQ for the race: there are points for all finishers, with a sliding scale of points for those finishing 1st to 50th; for the top ten in each stage , the yellow jersey wearer each day, and top ten in green and polka-dot (but not white) jersey competitions:full points here.
*I'll post the teams and some analysis of them on Saturday once entries are closed.
*I'll put up (real life permitting) daily updates of a green jersey classification and the main (yellow jersey) standings.
*I'll update the list of entries in this opening post at least once a day during the build up to the race.
*I'll send my team to the first manager to submit a team lest anyone think I am stealing their ideas. (That was DJW at Velorooms: he is the guardian of my conscience for the next three weeks)
*I'll despair quietly as my team drops into lower half of the table obscurity by the middle of week two, as it so often has before

What we will need to do collectively
Think about whether we want/need to change the format of the game next year to reflect the move from 9-man to 8-man teams. There is no reason why the team size in the game must reflect the teams in real life, but maybe some people like to compare. The main options would be a) keep everything as it is; b) reduce to teams of 8, with a corresponding change in budget (4000*8/9 = 3556, so 3500 or 3600); or c) change to 8 riders but keep the budget as it is. Thoughts?

Entrants To just after midnight (BST) on Saturday morning (just): 14 hours (I think) from the datestamp on this post for 11th hour entries.

One team was overbudget and the manager has accepted the automatic swap per the rules, all other teams correct and within budget (and correctly formatted: thanks guys)

The Team selection spreadsheet is finally up at Dropbox: Here it is. (and updated for Zubeldia in place of naughty Cardoso)

Many thanks to Search at VeloRooms, who had prepared a price list that would have been ideal for use if CQ hadn't finally made available their update 2 minutes before I was ready to post it.

Only 15 teams up to early on Friday morning, which is a bit disappointing.

This will bump it up the board as a reminder to others.

56 of the 198 riders are represented among those 15 teams: 2 are on 10 or more teams, 2 more on more than half, and there are 31 unique picks.

A day and a bit to go, let's get those entries in, before the first man rolls down the ramp in Dusseldorf...

Are we required to have the full nine riders? :D
Yes: it's all part of the challenge: you can't have 8 riders (excluding cheapest man Tulik) for more than 3984.

Good luck, if that means back to the drawing board.
I kind of knew this. But I have a team I'm very pleased with for 4001 points.
Why couldn't Tulik just let Deltombe pass him in the closing meters of Clasica de Almeria back in February?

Really difficult finding the riders at the right price this time

So true. Being on vacation I thought I won't find time to put a team together. But it's so tough this time that just spending 30 minutes thanks to AC spreadsheet won't make much difference.

I do hope for a good participation otherwise my spot top 20 should be certain.

Rider popularity

26 (out of 38) teams: VOECKLER Thomas
22: BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto
20: ARU Fabio
19: MEINTJES Louis
16: KITTEL Marcel
16: TULIK Angelo
12: KISERLOVSKI Robert
12: PORTE Richie
11: BOUDAT Thomas
11: NAVARRO GARCIA Daniel

From those 10, I had to drop Porte to create the highest possible popularity score team within budget as the Collective Wisdom squad. (That team is however about 700 below budget, and with Porte in place of Boudat it would be about would be about 700 over: I might see if I can set up a compromise with a score that averages out the contributions of Porte and Boudat)

Other frequencies of selection:
9: CINK Ondrej, POLJANSKI Pawel

Major picks

Mid-price picks, apart from youngsters Meintjes and Buchmann, have not been a big factor in many teams. Most of us found little value in that price range, so even more than usual this edition is about picking your main man/men, some potential breakaway points among the inexpensive, and cheap as possible makeweights who might get 20 points for finishing.

So if we consider anyone costing >2x the average budget per rider (which is 888 pts or more, but I've also included Cavendish @885), who has gone for whom?

(Ordered by price of most expensive rider)

Froome: Armchair Cyclist
with Cavendish: Bicycle Boy

Porte: AG Capt Cavman Del1963 Josedin

Green Jersey competition
These are the guaranteed points that your rider will get even if he fails to reach Paris. They are earned from top ten stage finishes and earning the yellow jersey.

First stage and my most expensive pick is out (Izaguirre). This year has not been going well for me in these games.

Regarding the changes for next year. I think we should reduce the riders to 8 and keep the budget.
The teams will probably have their average price increased, because the 9th man cut is likely to be filler/support/breakaway fodder.

If we reduce the price, making the teams will be much harder and not in the sense that it rewards skill.

As always much appreciation to Armchair cyclist for organizing the games.

Stage 1 update 2
Yellow Points

This is what the game is really about: this includes the guaranteed points above, but also points according to the riders' current standing in the GC, the points competition and (but not yet) the KoM ranking. As riders, like investments, can fall in these rankings, so daily updates can have negative scores.

What the scores are at this stage is essentially double daily rankings (because the points ranking is obviously the same as the daily ranking today), plus the GC rankings, from 600 for Thomas to 21 for Erviti in 50th, and 20 points for every rider below that.

I did, as I proposed above, make a compromise for the Collective Wisdom team. The top 9 in popularity would be way over budget, but swapping out Porte and putting in one of the next riders down left the team way below budget. So I have half of Porte's cost (and points earned), and half those of Dani Navarro, The total cost of the team thus made is slightly over budget (4031 pts), but it gives a point of comparison. (Such chimeric selections as Portvarro will not be available to managers in future editions of the game)

Kittel and Kung together put GPBlanco over the 1000 mark (for now)

I was pleased to see that the results sheet at letour.com is a csv table: that'll save a lot of time and correction of CN's vagaries and inconsistencies.

Most working days, I'll try to avoid hearing the results and watch the ITV4 highlights at 7pm, and do the update after that, so don't expect it much before 9pm (UK time) most days.

I'll keep a working copy of the spreadsheet at Dropbox, so you can investigate further here every day.

Classics men are expensive, but don't get many chances in a GT, so are rare picks. No point scorer is in more than one team, the only team to pick a podium man was last this morning in the overall, so some recompense there.

Not much correlation to yesterday's positions: 4 of the previous top ten remain in it, but 5 new entrants to the top ten rose by 12 or more places, Comodoro's 20 place rise being the most dramatic.

The main changes yesterday arose from everyone bar the top three moving up one spot to account for Sagan's removal, or moving up points rankings. Kittel's loss of the green jersey is the only appreciable loss.
