Like the equivalent post in the 2017-19 edition, this has been at Velorooms for six weeks, but this forum was acting up when I would have gone to copy it. And no-one asked after it...

Year 2, Month 6 3-30 June

JAKOBSEN Fabio 250 (Won National champs, 2nd in Elfstedenronde, team win in Hammer Limburg, stage points in Tour of Belgium) for 27 teams
PHILIPSEN Jasper 225 (6th in tour of Belgium, 2nd in Heistse Pijl, 3rd in Elfstedenronde, 9th in nationals) 21 teams
ASGREEN Kasper 171 (National TT win and RR 2nd, stage points from Tour de Suisse) for Leadbelly and LukasCPH
POGACAR Tadej 165 (National TT win, 7th in RR, 4th in Tour of Slovenia, 7th in Lugano) 16 teams
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro 100 12

HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose 82 22
CARBONI Giovanni 78 2
VAN SCHIP Jan-Willem 77 3
GANNA Filippo 76 23
MADOUAS Valentin 75 10

Evenepoel outscored them all, but he was only 17 when teams were submitted for this, so I guess not many of us knew of him.

For the 4th month in a row, Squire is the top scorer

Standings

If the leader keeps on being top scorer each month, that lead will only get bigger. Hugo, Skidmark and Laarsland all move up a place within the top ten, and Kazistuta and Cordi join that elite. Jon Ezeitza's 4 place move is the best of the month.

Standings

Squire is back on form, after his first month low in the table for some time, but the closest of the rest, up from 8th, is Fauniera. Hugo Koblet and Comodoro also move up, as those who were 2nd and 3rd each fall 3 places. Vladimir's reward for perseverance (he had Cherkasov as a UP two years in a row) is the biggest jump mention (8 spots)

Standings

With year 2 essentially over, Squire's lead is cut back somewhat, but the battle for the podium looks more interesting than that for the win. Comodoro, Karaev and Nathan all move up, as do Laarsland and Alykaptan farther down the top ten. Nathanptz is the only manager to have a 2 place rise anywhere in the table.

I'll do the loose change of the season around new year.

Year 2, Months 11 & 12 28 October to 31 December

As expected, not much happening at this time of year.

RAILEANU Cristian came 2nd in the Tour of Sinkarak, getting 24 points for Trudgin
EYOB Metkel picked up 13, mainly in the Tour of Fuzhou, for Leadbelly
and AGUIRRE CALPA Hernan Ricardo got 4 points for Karaev, Ludwigzgz, Monsieur Hulot and Rote Laterne for no effort, moving up the GC in Qinghai Lake when Monsalve got disqualified.

From those paltry points, only Ludwigzgz moved up a place, so the End or Year 2 Standings are:

Rider Scores
Year 2 of the game was dominated by the rise of Tadej Pogacar, with two unselected riders who dominate the 2019-21 edition providing his best competition: there is no shame that Evenepoel was not thought of in early 2018, but maybe we should have expected someone to have noticed Higuita's early results.
POGACAR Tadej 1519 pts 16 teams
EVENEPOEL Remco 952 0
HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres 914 0

JAKOBSEN Fabio 781 27
ASGREEN Kasper 757 2

With perfect foresight, a manager could have scored 17349 so far: Squire has 66.7% of that

If we follow the pattern of the game in previous years, Year Three will comprise about 40% of the final totals: will that leave anyone with enough points to catch up a 580 point deficit?

Year Three of the game that is drawing to a conclusion saw the winners of two Grand Tours: I'm not sure that this cohort have it in them to match that, but there could be some big results appearing in the scores.

And while you are waiting to see the results of the 2017-19 edition (I don't think I'll have much time to do the analysis on Sunday or Monday), you can make a start on your 2020-22 selection. There are 43 riders that we chose for this game who are still eligible for that one, if you really want to persevere with them.

Thanks for the update!

It's awesome seeing my team do this well! But I could be in trouble if Sosa+Hodeg outscore Cees Bol this year by more than the 500 point gap down to fauniera.

Edit: Oh, nevermind! Fauniera doesn't have Jakobsen. I'm a tiny bit safer then.

Year 3, Month 1 to 2nd February

Now is the time for riders to start to show what their standing will be in the sport. We have seen some super results, but will we see superstars?

Top January (and early Feb) scorers:
GANNA Filippo 125pts (2nd in San Juan ITT and GC) 23 teams
PHILIPSEN Jasper 111 (stage points, and point classification win, in TDU) 21
FLOREZ LOPEZ Miguel Eduardo 95 (stage win and 5th on GC in San Juan) for Kazistuta
MCNULTY Brandon 91 (4th in San Juan and some stage points) 18
MADOUAS Valentin 48 10
ARMIRAIL Bruno 38 2
PLANCKAERT Edward 32 5
RIVERA SERRANO Kevin 24 20
HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose 23 22
FABBRO Matteo 22 1

The scores in the game that is just starting its second year are more impressive for this month, mainly because Evenepoel and Moschetti were not on people's radar when this one started. But Kazistuta getting the top 5 scorers of the month into his team is not to be sniffed at.

Nathanptz and HugoKoblet, despite being modestly placed in the monthly ratings, each move up 2 places, to 3rd and 4th respectively. Armchair Cyclist matches that jump, but in a less significant part of the table.

Keep an eye out for the Spring Classics game before that.

Three place moves within the top ten wouldn't be expected this far into the game, but that is what Skidmark has managed. HugoKoblet, Laarsland and Alykaptan are also moving up in (or into) the top ten. The middle of the table is more stable.

We've already had two stage wins and a moral stage victory at the Tour de France from this cohort: what else will they manage before the end of this edition and this strangest of years?

Spreadsheet

Year 3, month 9 7th September to 4th October

"What else will they manage before the end of this edition?" I wondered at the end of the last post here: only perhaps the most remarkable TdF time trial and a GC win; two podium positions in Liege-Bastogne-Liege, and a World Championships win (time trial) and podium (road race), and Giro stage and Pink jersey. Not bad for youngsters...

POGACAR Tadej 1120 (2 more stage wins, KoM win and GC in the Tour de France, 3rd in L-B-Liege, 9th in Fleche) 16 teams

The highest placed non-Pogacar manager is The Asian in 13th.

Squire has been top of the table since May last year, and it seems like there is only one real challenger at this stage. Fauniera shares 11 of the Squire squad, and unless Ineos prioritise Sosa over Bernal, Carapaz, Froome and Thomas in La Vuelta, it's hard to see those 800 points being made up.

Check what has happened, and what still might, here.

Very little change: HugoK had a good month and a bit that mighthave reclaimed his podium spot had Cordi not been one of the few to outscore him. Squire and Fauniera had unremarkable performances, but their top two places were really never in doubt.

And the game is in the status of a Tour de France with only the Paris parade remaining: we all know who to congratulate, but the award can't be made quite yet.

As with the other games, I will do some analysis when the final data is out, but until then, here is the spreadsheet.

This has been my third season and I have managed to improve my previous positions. This year's 4th place improves on the previous 19th and 26th. We are learning. I want to thank Armchair for his work and tell him that in January we will see each other again on a new date.

We should indeed all see each other again for another round of this: don't take this as the launch (or I'll have to get my list of names ready to send to the first entrant), but expect the rules to be unchanged (18 riders, <200 career points), the launch to be early in January, and the deadline to be the end of that month.

So start thinking and listing, by all means, but don't send me anything yet.

Thanks again for all the work with these games! They are awesome to follow!

It's really fun and satisfying coming out on top here. That streak of winning four months in a row in the 2nd year was crazy!

I got a bit lucky with some rare-ish picks (chiefly Madouas who was more of a gut feeling. Didn't know much about him), while others I always had a big belief in (Hirschi since his junior years & my unique pick Cees Bol). And Pogacar, although a fairly obvious pick for me, outperformed my expecatations massively! As Armchair pointed out somewhere, having the TdF winner in these games is incredible.

I picked the wrong Androni kid (Rivera over Sosa), but that luckily didn't matter in the end.

The final analysis
Firstly, Year 3 months 11b-12 (16th November to the end of the year) changed none of the scores at all, so the final table is exactly as it was last month, so now Squire can be officially congratulated, as can Fauniera and Cordi on their podiums.

Of riders in the CQ era (emerging 1999 or later), Pogacar comes 4th in the rules of this game: behind Valverde, Sagan and Bernal, but ahead of any of the other 'greats' of this century. I can't help but wonder what position Evenepoel will occupy in a year's time.

That best possible selection would have scored 27571pts: Squire scored 65.1% of this, rather short of Madrazo's record of 69.5% in 2015-17, but still well ahead of anyone here.

Of the top teams, who had who of these top selections?

Other than Bol (who could be said to hold the difference between Squire's win and coming second), the other unique picks to make the best possible team was Madrazo's choice: Ballerini and Aimé De Gendt for North American Scum. Leadbelly and Lukas were the pair who went for Asgreen.
Those were the only teams to finish ahead of the Collective Ignorance team (virtual 11th is the worst performance yet of this anti-selection, which has actually dropped down the table every edition of the game), featuring Evenepoel, Vlasov, Higuita, Almeida and Aranburu.

2020 was not a great year for point scoring in CQ given the number of cancellations: only 31.9% of the games points came in year 3 (28.7 in Yr 1, 39.5 in year 2): in all previous editions year 3 has been the top scoring year by some amount.

There were 34 teams, and while 119 different riders were chosen, there were 18 ( a team's worth) who were on 11 or more teams. And they didn't do badly, apart from the perennially popular but disappointing in this game Albanese

This team would have come third overall, which is a best for the CW team in the 5 completed editions. I'm not sure whether that speaks well of us (many of us chose many successful riders) or if it is a bad reflection on us (for nearly all of us, the ones that should have been fairly obvious that we omitted are better than the ones we picked instead)

All Time lists
Well, scarcely all time, but 5 rounds of the game have now been completed. 11 managers entered all of them (and I think have been in the subsequent ones too), and the top ten cumulative scores are:

Ludwigzgz has moved up one spot since last year, Kazistuta and Vladimir 4 places each. This was Hugo Koblet's 4th participation, but he beats two teams that have had one more go than him to make tenth.

And to give those who have not been quite so consistent, the best averages for those who have completed at least three games.

but the Collective Wisdom team has an average of 15698, and the Collective Ignorance team still leads the long term rankings with 16281.

The failed picks
If the presence of Vincenzo Albanese in the Collective Wisdom team is a bit of an embarrassment, that more than half of us picked a rider who has scored just over 100 points in three years, that is not the end of the story. There are 31 riders that we picked who have gained fewer points than Albanese, 11 of them were picked by more than one of us, and one (Logan Owen) very nearly made the Collective Wisdom team. Two of them didn't manage a single point in the three years, and 28 of them are still eligible for the 2021-23 game

If that has not exhausted every piece of data you could hope to extract from the spreadsheet, and you still want to explore further, here it is.
