Stage 2 to Tel Aviv

Purple points
For those new to following these games, the purple points every day will be the top ten, plus the pink jersey wearer. This year, on the sprint stages we will probably see few teams laying claim to the big points, as Viviani's price meant he was unchosen, and his presumed supremacy meant other moderately expensive sprinters are rare selections.

VIVIANI Elia 70 0 teams
MARECZKO Jakub 40 2 teams (Chiron, Trudgin)
BENNETT Sam 25 2 teams (Tigerion, Yellow Knight)
DENNIS Rohan 18 9 teams
BONIFAZIO Niccolo 15 5 teams
MODOLO Sacha 10 3 teams
VENTURINI Clément 7 0 teams
GIBBONS Ryan 5 7 teams
BELLETTI Manuel 3 0 teams
PLANCKAERT Baptiste 2 0 teams
DRUCKER Jempy 1 0 teams

Although I wouldn't think of it as the main game, there can be some bragging rights in topping the Purple points table, and some teams in the past have looked as though they were put together with that goal in mind. Maybe that ambition is behind the multisprinter teams of Chiron (Marecsko, Modolo and Van Poppel), Tigerion (Bennett, Bonifazio, Gibbons and Sbaragli) and some others.

Standings
For the moment, top two finishers in the prologue, with the pink jersey bonuses, still define the top 10.

Pink points

Dumoulin, and the Bicycle Boy team, demonstrate how negative points are a thing in this way of keeping score. At the end of the race, CQ will give 500 points to the GC winner and 375 to whoever is second. So in falling from 1st to second, he loses 125 projected points. He also loses a bunch in the points classification. Note also that the KoM classification makes an impact, with Barbin getting a 70 point increase despite being 67th on the stage.

Standings

The top ten at this early (and probably irrelevant) stage consists of the 9 Dennis teams, followed by Bicycle Boy (Dumoulin). Yates is the main reason that Bminchow leads the Dennis teams, while the Pinot-Formolo combination raises Pirate and Del to the virtual podium, Kangert throwing the balance in The Pirate's favour.

Chiron manages a 15 place jump in position.

Standings
Minor GC changes bring Amis Velo and Ruvu above SafeBet as the only top ten changes, and Carlo Algatrensig rises 11 places in the day's most dramatic leap, but the unique combination of Dennis and Yates (currently 1st and 6th on GC) gives Bminchow the lead through our first rest day.

It is not so much that riders have moved up; more that non-GC men with a decent TT ranking have dropped down. Note that Guardini's DNF (or was it a DNS? I heard some mention of a second withdrawal on the restday, but never heard who) results in a 15 point loss: it had been assumed that he would be a finisher outside the top 50, but even that would have been worth 15 CQ points.

The main shake out of those who are by no means climbers happened yesterday, so only a slight continuation of that process today. Time lost was more relevant than projected points for Lopez, on whom more than half the teams have risked more than 30% of their budget; Pinot, almost as popular, lost almost as many points, but that was simply dropping one place due to Goncalves getting 4 bonus seconds.

Was hoping for something from Bennett today but looks like he was dropped and ended up in the grupetto. Not sure if he got caught up in that crash

I thought for a moment I had missed notification of a major time loss for George (or as Brian Smith sometimes calls him, Gordon Bennett). I guess Sam was still recovering from having totally misread the final gradients the day before.

Salvarani said:
Dennis was not 4th on the stage or am I missing something?

He was not, but as the recipient of 18 points for holding the Pink Jersey, he is the 4th highest CQ point scorer of the day. Those points are guaranteed (he will keep them even if he fails to finish the race) so I include them in this part of the calculations.

Got it. Thank you for clarification.

There will probably not be such a day of swings again: from now on it will be individuals' ups and downs that will create most of the changes, alongside the daily points. There won't be many people moving up 10 or more places in a day from now on, but there may well be drops that big or much bigger.

And so the standings get a thorough shake-up, but not so thorough that the leader is dethroned. Although it was a bad day for those with Dennis on the daily losses table, he remains (for now) the 4th highest projected scorer, and a very good return on investment.
Just behind Bminchow, whose lead is almost undented, Mellow Velo, Los Brolin and Rote Laterne all share the Michelton Scott duo with him, rise from 10th, 14th and 12th respectively, and are followed by most of what was this morning's top ten. Los Brolin was one of 4 teams to rise 11 places on the day, but they are all eclipsed by Axl, with a 12 position surge.

He couldn't move up in GC standings, but Yates still picks up KoM and Points jersey positions, as well as the stage points. Riders who could stay close on Etna, but not on this much longer climb, have slipped back on GC, so several riders gain places, and projected points, and others lose. Dumoulin and his team will not have considered the day unsuccessful, despite what the points on the day say.

The top 4, those who have both Yates and Chaves, now have a very large margin over the rest: they stay in the same order, but the gaps between them all have narrowed slightly. Nathanptz, Carlo A, Scrool and Russell all move up in the top ten, mainly as Dennis drops to a more realistic position, and the biggest jump of the day is shared by Axl and Kazistuta.

Standings

The top four, those with the Yates-Chaves combination, remain on top, but the two other Yates teams are now close behind them, and Chaves' contribution is now much reduced, although his stage points and 2nd in the KoM are still there. Of the other Yatesians, Scrool was already in the top ten (8th this morning), but Yellow Knoght has a jump from 14th into the elite. Bicycle Boy and Safe Bet far outstrip him, with jumps of 20 and 21 places respectively.

You still are: you only lost 8 points of your lead yesterday. Of the 6 Yates teams (the top 6 in GC), the three immediately behind you suffered the loss of Chaves' points, and the other two have not earned as much with the riders they picked instead. Indeed, both have picks more expensive than Yates with fewer projected points, even after yesterday, than Chaves (Lopez and Poels)

KoM standing and stage points mean that Chaves is still not a bad pick: no-one costing less has gained more points than him, and he is currently the 12th highest scoring rider.

Other than purple points, the most relevant issues are Aru finally getting ahead of some of those who were never tipped to beat him, and Woods getting blocked at the bottom of the hill (as far as I can find out)

Bminchow's lead was big enough to accommodate Woods' losses today: Mellow Velo's 2nd place was not so secure, and he falls off the podium. No other changes in the top ten, and a 5 place jump for SemirS was the biggest.

I'm not expecting much drama other than purple points for the next couple of days, but I thought a team featuring Chaves, Woods and Meintjes might be competitive, so what do I know?

I laughed. Although that might be because I have both Chaves and Meintjes in my team too
