Great ride by Yates, but I hope he doesn't burn himself out for the last week by trying to gain as much time as possible now in preparation for the TT. Once big Tom hammers him in the TT he may regret not saving some effort for later in the race. Froome gone, TD great effort, Pozzo good, even Aru wasn't too far behind, Pinot biding his time.

I'd make Dumoulin favourite after today but Yates is clearly the best climber in the race. He needs another 1:30 on Dumoulin for the expected TT loss.

Climbers will be seen on the high mountains, Yates for sure has been the most explosive so far

Dumoulin is getting stronger but he aint no better climber than Yates. As long as Yates picks off bonus seconds and gets enough margin for TT he should win it still

But of course Yates may have well overpeaked, 3rd week will be glorious

This. He's going to need to figure a way to gain more time before the TT I think. Dumo appears to be timing his peak for the right time.

Not so sure about that. I don't think Pinot and Pozzovivo are much behind him on the real climbs. Yates has just been a lot smarter so far, which makes his climbing form seem better than it is.

It's still definitely advantage Dumoulin but if Yates continues like this he will give himself a decent shot at winning.

As a Brit I'm just delighted to be watching a compatriot compete for a Grand Tour win without making it a snoozefest!

The main question is how the climbers will stack up to each other when climbs are ridden all out from further out instead of riding them negative split. Only losing 2s to a punchier climber was a huge effort from Dumoulin.

It's easy to be smarter when you're stronger!

No, the two factors are unrelated in this case.

I was thinking in those terms too. The finale suited Yates perfectly and that attack was well timed BUT Dumo reacted late to that, and yet he managed to limit the damage down to 2 mere seconds......

So Dumo is rising while Yates is at peak.......
