Geraint Thomas teams now in 2nd, 4th and 5th, probably with a few more yellow jersey bonuses to come, but Degenkolb (AG, Koronin, NAS and 2 other teams) is about as good a sprinter as anyone still in the game (Laporte and Arndt are on one team each, Guarnieri (if we have really looking that far down the list of sprinters) is on 6)

Yellow points
After the huge shake-up yesterday, there wasn't much left to filter today, but a couple of notable position swaps and the downward drift of Caruso, Yates, Pozzovivo and Pauwels gift some points. Otherwise non-finishing sprinters losing their putative green jersey and finisher points are the main impact of the day.

Well, I though someone might dislodge Semir eventually, but I didn't expect that...
The Thomas teams pull out a bit of a gap on the rest of the field, but Froome may have it in him to remove 150 points from their tallies when SDB gives the command. Evans is the Best and Laarsland appear in the top ten, EitB with the daily best 12 place hop.

Wow, who knew Taylor would score me a point? One of my lowest three points picks because I figured he wouldn't loose me any points. LOL. I guess with Uran out the team is going to let him sprint. With many of the sprinters out, they may as well.

I just want to say that I really apreciate these games and I always look forward to the daily updates and the detailed analisys on rest days, so thanks for organising this @armchair cyclist.

It usualy takes me a whole week to create a team for these games but this time I almost forgot about it and picked my team in 15 minutes. I deliberately tried to create a team that is not too high on the popularity ranking.

For me it's probably either going to be a top-4 or a bottom-15 finish, so I'm gonna hope that Fuglsang gets better in the third week and that Thomas is not going to fail in some way (even if the past tells us he will) so I can get away with the win at the end even though I am left with only two riders that are scoring points for my team.

Semir edges closer, Los Brolinn is the highest placed riser, and Axl and Postmanhat, with 4 place rises, share that accolade for today.

The stage win was the minor part of Quintana's gains on the day; his GC improvement from 8th to 5th is more valuable, and he suddenly appears at 4th in the polka dot classification.

Standings
Only one of the 4 teams with Geraint Thomas also has Quintana, and now has a handsome margin. The other three Thomas teams had a big enough margin to preserve their positions, but all other teams without Quintana drop. That allows Los Brolin to become the top Thomas-less team, and behind him everyone in the top ten has improved their position, with Axl, Shalgo and Squire having joined that company. Vladimir, Laarsland and The Pirate all move up 10 places or more, Pirate by 14.

Thomas's 9 days of yellow jersey points (with one more, presumably, to come: no yellow jersey bonus after last stage) and his sprinting prowess compared to other GC riders, place the 4 Thomas teams in the top four, albeit in a different order than in the yellow classification.

Given that:
a) the only TT talent remaining in any of these teams is the defining factor that is on all of them (Thomas);
b) the only remaining rider likely to sprint with any intent on the Champs Elysees out of these teams is AG's Degenkolb; and
c) the large time gaps that are found between riders in any positions with significant GC points;
I don't really see that these positions are likely to change too much in the last 2 days, as long as everyone remains upright.

Stage 20 GC men dominate the TT, and it's all over bar the sprinting

I have to visit my not-online father-in-law tomorrow, so it will probably be Monday night before I can confirm final results. In my defence, at least I'm not leaving anyone else on tenterhooks wondering if they have sealed the win.

Unlike in the real green jersey competition, all stages score equally, and yellow jersey wearer points are also included in these guaranteed CQ points, as are some points from the TTT.

Most of the selections based on amassing sprint points came to grief in the Alps. The riders getting points equivalent of a stage 2nd or better are:
1 THOMAS Geraint 495pts 4 teams (incl 200 YJ points)
2 SAGAN Peter 494 0 (incl 20 YJ points)
3 VAN AVERMAET Greg 275 0 (incl 160 YJ points)
4 ALAPHILIPPE Julian 258 0
5 KRISTOFF Alexander 235 0
6 GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando 230 21 (incl 20 YJ points)

Of these, green competition winner BikeRacer33 has Thomas, Groenewegen and Fraile;
AG has Thomas, Degenkolb and Kittel;
SemirS has Thomas and Gaviria;
Armchair Cyclist has Thomas, Izagirre and Quintana;
and among the best without Thomas:
NAS has Gaviria, Degenkolb, Izagirre and Fraile
Koronin has Gaviria, Degenkolb, Izagirre and Valverde
Comodoro has Gaviria, D Martin and Quintana
(all those Izagirres refer to Ion, Gorka was unchosen)

The team with the biggest sprinter spend, Total Package (Gaviria, Kittel and Cavendish), ended up 18th in this classification.

Final Standings
Degenkolb gives NAS a final leg-up to the top-non-Thomas slot, and the only last minute improvement among the top ten. Kazistuta and Postmanhat each get a 5 place hike to put some gloss on their final positions.

Well who'da thunk it. Essentially all victory required was to have Thomas and the 10th place on GC plus a stage win gained by Quintana, with 2nd places and on overall 22nd from Ion Izagirre giving a bit of a margin of comfort.

I shall learn a salutary lesson from the current placing of last year's winner, Amis Velo, now languishing in last place.

Got to go out now, a bit more analysis of the numbers later.

The top 40 scorers. The fact that the three riders who scored closest to Thomas were essentially priced out of the game was a great help to the Thomas teams.

Only Kangert, Kruijswijk, and possibly Martin and Rolland, among these can be said to have been successful. Sutherland and Guarnieri fulfilled the low expectation on them, as cheap finishers; Gaviria looked like he might have been very worth picking until he, and most other sprinters, came adrift in the Alps; Quintana redeemed himself partially by winning the short mountain stage, and eventually made the difference between the top four; and Porte was chosen by all four of the Thomas teams, so eventually his result was null no matter how well he might have done had he avoided his fall.

The Collective Wisdom team would have come 13th, with quite an underspend, so although these riders mainly underperformed, it was not disastrous.

Best possible team
Hakkie traditionally does a better job of working this out than I do, but I think it is:
THOMAS Geraint 1123pts 4 teams 1040 cost
ROGLIC Primoz 452 1 1441
MARTIN Daniel 386 11 828
KRUIJSWIJK Steven 304 11 531
BOSWELL Ian 20 5 46
SCULLY Tom 22 2 40
SUTHERLAND Rory 20 12 20
GUARNIERI Jacopo 20 6 25

Other combinations of cheap, 20 point finishers would be possible. This lot would come in close to budget, on the right side at 3971, and would have scored 2347pts. It would also have come lowest on the popularity charts.

All the numbers here

Thanks to CQ for the scoring system, to PCS for the results, to the riders, and to everyone who had a go. I'm sure you will put me in my place in the Vuelta game.

Thanks for setting this up...first time I did a game like this so I'm pleased with 5th place. Degenkolb tends to let me down so I was wary to pick him but was glad he has some good results. Kruijswijk also did better than I thought he would.

I managed to find a team with a cost of 3993 points and a return of 2614 points, being:
Thomas
Kangert
Kruijswijk
Sutherland
Degenkolb
Dumoulin
Bernard
Fraile

Edit: managed to further improve the score by replacing Sutherland and Fraile for Rolland and Geschke. That makes 2623 points for a cost of 3978. So now it is
Thomas
Kangert
Kruijswijk
Degenkolb
Dumoulin
Geschke
Bernard
Rolland

I told you Hakkie was better at finding the best possible team than I am, I had just assumed that Dumoulin couldn't be accommodated without trialling it.

That team would still have one of the lowest popularity rankings, and would have 3 unique picks (Dumoulin, Geschke, Bernard), but vindicates the popularity of three of our Collective Wisdom team (Rolland, Kangert and Kruijswijk, who was only in to make the budget more realistic)

It also would have topped the green points classification easily.
