That top three are so close that it only took Dani Moreno moving up through the 30s in GC to move from 3rd to first. Koronin's super-day brings him to just off the podium, the rise of the day (9 places), and the only new team in the top ten.

Sometimes a manager lets his heart dictate his pick. Sometimes a manager decides to risk more than half his budget on one rider. Occasionally those coincide. And very rarely, one or both of those tactics pays off. But even if it makes you top scorer on 3 days out of 4, it might leave you just short...

In an almost neutralised day in the game, Koronin's 2 place hop from 4th to 2nd is the biggest step forward of the day, and Josedin is the only other manager to move up in the top ten.

Sorry for the late update: stage 9, now underway, should let us know how realistic the standings at this stage are.

Los Brolin slightly extends his lead, and Axl regains the second place he lost yesterday, but lots of change behind those two, with the three Yates teams gatecrashing the top ten, led by Amis Velo in third place, although Bicycle Boy had a slightly bigger (13 place) jump. Salvarani, courtesy of Quintana and Uran, also breaks into the top ten.

After a blip in the Tour, I am back in my more accustomed place.

Rest Day 1
A focus on the scores of the riders, rather than the teams.

Green points

We have not done particularly well in selecting those getting good stage placings or red jersey wearers so far, and the scores in this category are rather low.

1 VALVERDE BELMONTE Alejandro 165pts 1 team (Koronin, this one rider alone would put him top)
2 KING Benjamin 140 0 (would only have cost 77 points)
3 KWIATKOWSKI Michal 134 0
4 SAGAN Peter 107 0
5 VIVIANI Elia 95 0

6 DENNIS Rohan 88 1 (Yellow Knight)
7 BOUHANNI Nacer 85 2 (LightBing and Total Package)
8 MOLLEMA Bauke 80 0
9 MOLARD Rudy 79 0
10 GALLOPIN Tony 77 0

11 VAN POPPEL Danny 72 2 (NAS and Shalgo)
12 CLARKE Simon 70 0 (Other than Stalnov and King, only one who might have been a decent pick on %age return for green points alone so far)

13 NIZZOLO Giacomo 50 14 (including Total Package and Shalgo)
14 STALNOV Nikita 40 0 (Even cheaper than King)

15 DE MARCHI Alessandro 32 2 (Koronin and Gotland)
16 YATES Simon 28 3 (Amis Velo, Bicycle Boy and SemirS)

Red points

1 VALVERDE BELMONTE Alejandro 610pts 1 team (His green points, and those in minor categories, more than make up for the point differential between first and second)
2 YATES Simon 528 3
3 QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander 327 17
4 GALLOPIN Tony 294 0
5 KING Benjamin 279 0

21 DENNIS Rohan 103 1
22 BOUHANNI Nacer 100 2
22 MATE MARDONES Luis Angel 100 1

Who among these do the top teams have?
1 LosBrolin 1111 Quintana, Buchmann, Uran, Aru
2 Axl 1093 Quintana, Buchmann, Uran, Mas, de la Cruz
3 AmisVelo 1075 Yates, Quintana
4 Nathanptz 1035 Quintana, Buchmann, Uran
5 Hakkie2 1028 Quintana, Buchmann, Aru, Mas, de la Cruz
6 Rote_Laterne 999 Quintana, Buchmann, Uran, Bennett
7 BicycleBoy 922 Yates, Lopez, de la Cruz
8 Koronin 906 Valverde, Mas
9 Salvarani 897 Quintana, Uran, Aru, Mas
10 SemirS 891 Yates, Uran, de la Cruz

Expensive picks not in that list of 100 point plus riders include Pinot (3 teams), Martin (1), Trentin (1), Zakarin (3), and Porte (10). SemirS and Laarsland manage 10th and 12th despite having lost budget on Porte: no-one else with these expensive failures make the top 20.

I am honour bound to be the second person to have a team ready, but why did the other teams who had selected Porte not do as Shalgo did, and swap him out when he was too ill to attend the pre-race formalities?

Yeah I did risk a lot going with picking Valverde. Yes he is a heart/favorite rider pick. I basically hoped he had gotten his form back to something resembling decent plus the great terrain for him I hoped he'd be up there for most stages in the top 10 (baring breaks taking stages). There are two mountain stages I am/was most worried about with him. He's gotten through one of them, one more to go. It will be interesting to see the Green points at the end for teams plus specifically what Valverde ends up with compared to other combos of riders. Although I guess if ends up with the Green Jersey in Madrid I should end up fairly high in that category here. :)

There weren't many points today, but there were enough to put Amis Velo top of the table, up from third. Shalgo is into the top ten, also on a 2 place rise, but they are outdone, just, by Bminchow.

Amis Velo extends his lead, mainly by dint of not having Buchmann. Not for the first time, Koronin's rather eclectic team takes the daily headlines, up 8 places and just off the podium.

Red points

I checked on the spreadsheet mid-stage, and was briefly excited to see that two teams have Herrada, but that was the rather cheaper option, José, so noone gets the 458 point bonus that would come from being a follower of Jesús. But lots of points lost because he (and to a lesser extent Brambilla) displaced so many riders who were higher in GC this morning.

Chaos on the mountain, and in our game. Nathanptz moves from 4th to take the lead, and Axl holds his position while Amis Velo and Los Brolin both drop 2 places. Further down the top ten, Rote Laterne, Salvarani and Shalgo all move up, but are all overtaken in BicycleBoy's 5 place leap. An even bigger, 7 place, jump brings Mellow Velo into the top ten.

Standings

"Only" second place today, Bicycle Boy stretches the lead from just four points to nearly a hundred. Koronin nudges Semir off the podium, And Hakkie and GPBlanco are in the top ten. I am no longer bumping along near the bottom, after a 14 place, leap-of-the-day, move.

Standings

Time trials are often more significant for the difference in time gaps than the changes in GC position. Similarly, there was a fairly wide range of scoring in our table, but few changes. GPBlanco is the highest placed team to have risen, although only by 1 place, and Bike Racer makes the top ten. Blues in the Bottle has a 6 place jump.

So back to the battle against gravity for most of the rest of the week.

The current leader, Bicycle Boy, was bottom of the popularity ranking table (de la Cruz is the only member of his team on more than three teams), and the team in third was third from bottom in popularity (only Meintjes from Koronin's team is in the Collective Wisdom team).

Ironically, the team between those two in the popularity stakes, second from bottom there, is second from bottom here, so an idiosyncratic selection is no guarantee of success.

Now that is interesting. In my case I banked on Valverde having his typical Vuelta. We'll see if that holds.

Standings
All three Yates teams had him combined with a different Colombian contender. Now that Lopez is looking confidently the strongest of those, Bicycle Boy's lead is looking pretty secure. Koronin is up to second, with the Spanish proportion of the GC podium. Akuryo pulls out a 9 place rise.
