Giro d'Italia 2020 Giro d'Italia CQ game

It's less than a week since the Tour de France ended, we're in the middle of the World Championships, but halfway through the Spring Classics game, and I'm launching the Giro game. 2020, huh?

If you don't know these games

cqranking.com is a site you should check out. It took on the allocation of points from all .1 and higher races when the UCI stopped doing so after the initiation of the ProTour in 2005, and has continued it since, thus making an invaluable summary of results and career progressions since the turn of the millennium.

Although they publish a score for during the calendar year, the score that is more relevant to us here is the running score over the last 12 months. Those scores are available on that site, and can vary day to day, but are also on a spreadsheet made available for download once a week. It is those prices for the year to Sunday 27th September, as they will appear on the download on Monday 28th, that are the cost of each rider in the game.

Your task as a manager is to pick 8 riders who are taking part in the Giro, and whose total cost is no more than 3500 points. Your score is the CQ points they gain in the Giro (points for the top ten, 70 to the winner, in each stage; the same scale of points for the final points and mountains classifications; 18 points for the pink jersey wearer going into each stage; and final GC position with scores from 500 for the winner down to 15 for all finishers) The prices, start list, and full score charts are on a spreadsheet here. That spreadsheet also gives you the version of riders' names which I would ask you to use.

Your list of riders should be with me (send a personal message on Cycling News or VeloRooms) before the stage 1 starts at 13:15 Italian time on 3rd October. If your team is over budget or you select a rider who does not start, I will try to alert you to the need to change, but if you don't, I'll swap him for the next cheapest in the same team, or next cheapest altogether if necessary. There will be updates after each stage.

If you only need the summary
8 riders, 3500 points, by 13:15 on 3rd Oct, selection tool.

Please don't try to submit your team before the prices are set after Sunday's results, but by all means start thinking.

And, as ever, good luck to all.

It'd be easier to pick a team if we had something closer to a full start list. Have I just forgotten in the Covid break or are more teams usually finalised by this point?
Three teams confirmed so far: it does seem a bit slow.

I'll keep it up to date as best I can. Prices come out today, and probably more rumours. I might take a stroll around some other sites for likely selections (I tend to use PCS, as their "changes to startlist" page is handy).

But don't panic: you have until Saturday, and if you pick your team early you can change it until Saturday.

EDIT: Cycling Fever seems more up to date, so I have used that for the selection tool instead.

FURTHER EDIT: And now PCS has added far more riders, but some teams that have put their team on Twitter are as on CF rather than PCS, and PCS has the Covid affected Sabatini, so I'll stick with CF.

All the teams are now finalised, and the selection tool and Search's list (see previous post)

Less than 24 hours to go. We have 18 teams so far, who have selected 42 riders between them, 25 as unique picks and no less than 6 on at least half the teams.

Don't forget to get your team in before Alex Dowsett rolls down the ramp.

Right, after my amazing luck with the random-picking at the Stage Prediction Challenge at the Tour, I'm gonna give this a go, using the same tactic.

Vincenzo Nibali
Marco Mathis
Jai Hindley
Alessandro Tonelli
Manuel Boaro
Mikkel Honoré
Sean Bennett
Rick Zabel

Yeah... I think I'm gonna have to hope Nibali does well.

We normally don't post the teams publicly, to avoid revealing our ideas and tactics, but that doesn't really enter into it if it is a random selection. It uses less than half the budget allowed (but the average cost of a rider in the race is about half the budget anyway). I suspect you are going to let down the average CN score compared with the Velorooms forum.

But a plea to anyone else entering for the first time (and it would be great to have you): if you list your team as Redhead has done, then I need to take time to reconfigure them all like this
NIBALI Vincenzo
MATHIS Marco
HINDLEY Jai
TONELLI Alessandro
BOARO Manuele
HONORE Mikkel Frølich
BENNETT Sean
ZABEL Rick

before the spreadsheet can do anything with them.

The riders
There are 176 riders in the race (well, 174 now): 60 have been picked for the game.

It still hasn't quite been done, but for a long time I thought we might get not just one, but two riders on every single team. Then I had one without Kruijswijk, but it wasn't until Googolplex's very last minute entry (if one excludes Redhead Dane's entirely randomly generated squad) that we had a team without Geraint Thomas.
I can't remember anyone combining popularity with a high price in the way that Yates has done in any of these games.

In order of popularity:

32: THOMAS Geraint
30: KRUIJSWIJK Steven
28: YATES Simon
21: MATTHEWS Michael
18: NIBALI Vincenzo
16: OOMEN Sam
11: ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves
10:KONRAD Patrick
8: KELDERMAN Wilco
6: VLASOV Aleksandr
5: SAGAN Peter
4: CEPEDA ORTIZ Jefferson Alexander, FUGLSANG Jakob, GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando, HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose, KNOX James, MCNULTY Brandon
3: DE GENDT Thomas, DOWSETT Alex, GANNA Filippo, GUERREIRO Ruben Antonio Almeida, HÄNNINEN Jaakko
2: CARBONI Giovanni, DENNIS Rohan, DIBBEN Jonathan, DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd, HAIG Jack, HOLMES Matthew, MASNADA Fausto, MEINTJES Louis, O'CONNOR Ben, VALTER Attila
and the unique picks (28 of them) are indicated in the preceding post.

Collective Wisdom
With no less than 6 riders being on at least half the teams, popularity rankings are high, and many teams are very close to the maximum possible. The best possible is those top 6 in the selection stats, plus Konrad and Cepeda. But that would leave the Collective Wisdom team quite a lot under budget, and it proves possible to average out three of those 4 team riders and still come in on budget. So the points at the bottom of the table are procured by:
THOMAS Geraint
KRUIJSWIJK Steven
YATES Simon
MATTHEWS Michael
NIBALI Vincenzo
OOMEN Sam
KONRAD Patrick
1/3 of CEPEDA ORTIZ Jefferson Alexander
1/3 of HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose
1/3 of MCNULTY Brandon

Three riders are so popular that they are almost neutralised in the game, but not totally. Those who do not have them are:
Googolplex and Redhead Dane have none of the three

No-one else turned down Thomas;

Kruiswijk is also omitted by DJSprtsch and Jakob747;

Yates was spurned by ChrisDK, Del1962, Safebet and Scrool007

Stage 1 Palermo ITT

Purple points because I refuse to acknowledge that colour as cyclamen.

These are the points for the top ten in each stage (70, 40, 25 down to 1 for 10th). These points, like the 18 points gained by the pink jersey wearer after each stage except the last, cannot be lost even if the rider fails to reach Milan.

Main Game

Your points here include those stage points, but also points according to each rider's position in the GC (500 for the leader, 15 for anyone outside the top 50), KoM and Sprint classification points (same points as each stage), and the above mentioned pink jersey points.

Today, of course, points are very much in line with the stage result.

But these positions are no more a reflection on who might win than the current GC is a suggestion that Ganna will win the Giro.

OK, I don't think that has happened before.
We have had teams that were very similar, and the riders who comprised the difference between the team were outside the top 50 and had no stage top tens. I remember one game in which such a pair of teams was in a high position, but changes in GC meant they fell away to a sufficiently obscure position that it mattered to no-one that there was a tie.

But I don't think we have had two identical teams before. They both spent 3425 points, so I will invite each of them to select one rider of cost up to 75 points, not to add to their score but to distinguish between them, if and only if they are in the top 5.

If other teams in the top five are equal, I suggest that the first tiebreaker is the score of their 2nd rider, then the third, and so on (including, if necessary, their position in GC outside the top 50, although both riders would be on 15 points in the game): thus there is favour given to the more balanced team.
For example, ArchieBoy and BikeRacer33 are currently tied for 7th. Their 2nd, 3rd and 4th highest scorers are all the same 3 riders, and in each case the lower 4 riders are all on 15 points. But Archie's 5th man is Vlasov, 54th in GC, while BikeRacer's is Konrad in 62nd, so if I needed to differentiate between them, Archie would get the higher placing. I hope it doesn't come into play much.

But when I was considering how sprinters might place in the final Tour stage in Paris, there were a number of plausible scenarios that could have made for a tie, so it is good to have some scalpel to slip between managers if necessary.

Amazingly my team not only isn't the most unique team it's not even in the top 5 of most unique teams. It's also tied for 2nd behind RedheadDane with 3 unique picks.

Now to try to win the purple jersey. (I also prefer to call it purple.)

And my condolensces to the Vlasov pickers. I didn't have the courage to do it. And it looks like i should have stuck with Ciccone, just so i could have a unique pick. Nice pick on Bjerg! Again, I didn't have the courage. Bot those two are on my season long team, so at least I have that.

So the resolution of the identical teams of Fivezzz and Leadbelly will be decided by
HÄNNINEN Jaakko (for Leadbelly) and
RUBIO REYES Einer Augusto (for Fivezzz)

In the first instance by the CQ points that they score, or by their GC position if they both finish with the same CQ points, or by the number of stages completed if they both DNF, or by their GC position on the morning of the stage that they both fail to finish if it comes to it.

With the number of very popular picks (6 in more than half the teams), and the small number of promising looking outside bets, then I suppose it is not that surprising that it has arisen this time around.
