Stage 8 The unpursued breakaway

We all try to guess who might be part of a successful breakaway when we are looking for our cheaper picks: sometime we just stumble across breakaway success in trying to find a cheap pick for time trial stages.

Purple points

3 Shalgo 70 (Dowsett)
4= Nakazar, Northerner`30 (Holmes and Matthews)

Still no change on the top ten: Nazazar is the new entry to this group, up 7 places.

Purple points

Sometimes picks for a breakaway come off.

1 Googolplex 72 (Guerrero and Fuglsang)
2= Comodoro, Laarsland 70 (Guerrero)

Yet again, the top three is stable, but double figures jumps into the top ten for two of Guerrero's teams, and even Bjerg as a unique pick gets an 8 place move up.

I sometimes dig up some other stats on a rest day, but I might have to leave you to do that for yourselves tomorrow.

So the field has been decimated.

Kruijswijk takes 120 points off 30 teams, and Matthews costs 21 teams 40 points each. two more chosen riders leave the race, affecting three teams. Upward moves to plug these gaps costs gains no rider more that 12 points.

Although Googolplex still has 8 riders going, five teams are reduced to just three men on today's startline.

But DJSprtsch has none of this morning's DNS list in his team, and the top five would be:

1 DJSprtsch 1504
2 LosBrolin 1347*
3 Leadbelly 1347
4 Fivezzz 1347
5 Bminchow 1288

*by virtue of third biggest scorer

And because someone asked:
Tean Velorooms average: 963
CN Squad average: 887
(Sunday night's scores)

Stage 10 Sagan not second

Purple points

A complete podium on the stage for DJSprtsch, and a bit more besides. I'm not sure if we have had that on GT games before.

1 DJSprtsch 138 (Sagan, McNulty, Almeida and Kelderman)
2 Googolplex 110 (Sagan and McNulty)
3 Nathanptz 100 (Sagan, Almeida and Konrad)
4 Salvarani 75 (Sagan and Konrad)
5 Del1962 70 (Sagan)
6 Kazistuta, Triley36 40 (McNulty)
8 LosBrolin 33 (Almeida, Konrad and Kelderman)

Tomorrow I fear will be an unchallenged and largely irrelevant breakaway stage. But someone might have chosen the right men in that breakaway.

Yesterday's long DNS list, and the fact that the four most popular picks in the game are now out, make an update of the "How many riders left?" table timely:
8 riders: Googolplex
7: RedheadDane
6: DJSprtsch, Scrool07
5: Armchair_Cyclist, BicycleBoy, BluesInTheBottle, Del1962, Jakob747, SafeBet, Salvarani, Shalgo, Yellow_Knight
4: AmisVelo, Bminchow, Comodoro, Fivezzz, JustSomeGuy, Kazistuta, Koronin, Laarsland, Leadbelly, LosBrolin, Nakazar, Nathanptz, Northerner, Rote_Laterne, Search, Triley36 and Collective Wisdom
Just three men still going: ArchieBoy, BikeRacer33, ChrisDK, Mellow_Velo, Otoxiep87

It was fun while it lasted. 4 of my 8 riders out, one with bad luck and 3 with positive covid tests, it has sadly turned into a game of who is least unlucky. Congrats nonetheless to the eventual winner.

I agree with Koronin and Fivezzz. There is quite a bit of luck involved there but also some skill in picking Wilco and Almeida. And of course spending the money on Sagan. I'm just going to ride those top two and see how long it lasts. Maybe stay in the top 10. Or, is it possible that Dennis finds his form and wins me a couple of TTs?

I agree with Koronin and Fivezzz. There is quite a bit of luck involved there but also some skill in picking Wilco and Almeida. And of course spending the money on Sagan. I'm just going to ride those top two and see how long it lasts. Maybe stay in the top 10. Or, is it possible that Dennis finds his form and wins me a couple of TTs?

The four popular picks that have withdrawn were so popular, that it was almost more of a decision, or a more difficult decision, to exclude them than to include them. So maybe the teams that are doing well thought "I don't think Thomas/Yates/Matthews/Kruijswijk is going to do what everyone seems to be expected of them, I'll go for Almeida/Kelderman/Sagan/Bilbao/Pozzovivo instead" (not that anyone took those last two). So maybe the successes are deserved.
But unless Almeida is the next DNF and Carboni wins every breakaway, and Oomen every MTF from here in, I won't be one of them.

Standings

DJSprtsch already had a huge lead, then he tops the day and his nearest rivals get a negative score. The lead was already over 200, now it is over 450. A dominance not seen in these games since Tobydawq ran away with the Spring Classics game back in the days when they took place in the spring. But more than 2000 in one of these games is pretty impressive, even if he had not had the lost expectations with Yates and Thomas. Leaden FiveBelliezzz complete the podium, and Hanninen still leads Rubio by 1'58.

Los Brolin, largely by not having Nibali, moves up to second. In the battles of the ninth men, Rubio made much more of an effort on this stage than Hanninen, and now lies more than 26 minutes ahead of him on GC, so Fivezzz has the advantage over Leadbelly.

Velorooms 975
CN 914

Six of the Almeida teams, including the top five, have Kelderman too, so even if the long anticipated change of pink jersey happens tomorrow, it will probably make little difference here. Maybe it is just the lower steps on the podium that remain to be contested (and in relation to the, Hanninen has greatly reduced his deficit to Rubio today).

Stage 18 Stelvio, sleeves and stopwatches.

Nathanptz regains the lead, but tomorrow should see some sprinters scoring, which might turn the advantage back to Del.

Standings
Although he is out of the lead, Almeida is still the main indicator of having a good standing here: 270 points in leader's bonuses will do that. The top six now still have the pink jersey wearer, but there are now two non-Almeida teams ahead of some of those who have him.
