Giro d'Italia 2020 Giro d'Italia: Stage-by-Stage Analysis

9.

Stages 16 and 17 would likely see more action if they came after stages 18 and 20. And the amount of time trialling is pretty decent overall, but the 'long' one pales in comparison to the long one in 2015.

Other than that, it is difficult to fault. There are a lot of interesting medium mountain stages (especially like stage 5, and the wall in the middle of that final climb). It appears well suited to Fulgsang wearing the maglia rosa for a number of days, but I struggle to imagine him holding onto it if stages 18 and 20 go ahead as scheduled. The ITT's say Thomas. The third week says Nibali. Current form says Yates. It's wide open.

Ganna probably thinks 60 is decent enough for the first km but he gonna need a lot bigger than that.

There you have it. As it is tradition, I have made a lot of mistakes that you are now contractually obligated to let me know about.
Also, keep in mind that the numbers of some minor climbs might be wrong, as I'm still waiting for the official numbers that haven't been published yet. Once they do, I will update them.

And don’t forget, the next edition is in only 7 months from now!!!

You know, I don't only love the Giro because of just being the Giro. Your threads are a part of this race and by far the best race threads of the season. Thank you again man!

Fantastic descriptions.

I have only one bigger reservations on what is otherwise an excellent route, and that is the final ITT. I would have preferred by far the Valdobbiadene ITT to be 15 km longer, and a traditional passerelle in Milano for the final stage after everyone going mental in stage 20. Now of course stage 20 is still the last opportunity for the climbers, but everyone will know they will have to keep something for the final ITT. Perhaps it won't matter as stage 20 is so difficult anyway, but I don't see the point of the final ITT.

Then perhaps a smaller point is on stage 8 to Vieste, I cannot really understand why the final circuit was added.

And I agree that the Madonna di Campiglio is ... weird. Not bad in any sense, though it might spoil a bit stage 16 in Friuli (but on other hand, tired legs might make stage 18 even more epic), but well, what was the idea there really? The hardest side of Bondone (by the way, a real beast! The last kms after Garniga are steep and on a narrower road than than the usual onel) with 100 km to go, after another tough climb, but then the rest of the stage is easy, and comes before the Queen stage? So hard to predict what can happen there. Maybe nothing, likely very little, but if a team wants to make it difficult from the Forcella Valbona, who can really control the race?

Thanks for you work. Incredible as usual...

Seems like this Giro can be a GT for ages. Only concern is for high altitude stages in the late part of the race, If Agnello and Stelvio stages will be under snow, then it will be GT for TT specialists such as Thomas and Dumoulin. And its a strong possibility. Otherwise its great route and have to be a great spectacle!

Somehow the profiles worked on my phone. ( EDIT: Apparently I can view it on my computer as well, I am in a different location than yesterday )
After checking the stages detailed, my question is, the best Giro route since? I really really like this route. I would have liked bit more ITT though ( 25-30 km or so more make the toal amount around 90 km or so )

Absolutely. 2016 could have used a little more early action than Roccaraso and the ITT was really weird and technical leading to rain causing tiny tiny gaps.

I remember being thoroughly disappointed with the 2017 route. 2018 wasn't perceived all that well, it didn't really have enough ITTs for having Zoncolan and Finestre.

2019 was just too backloaded

I would have preferred a longer middle TT of say 50/55km, the first TT would then be fine as a shorter prologue as originally intended. However for sure one of the better routes of the past decade.
