2020 Vuelta CQ Game

The Giro is still going on, and the Ronde is a few days away, but La Vuelta starts (fingers crossed: this morning's Giro news does not imbue confidence) a week today, so let's start this.

Your Team 8 riders who take part in La Vuelta, whose total cost is 3500 CQ points.

Rider Prices CQ points for the year to 11/10/20 (it wouldn't be practical to take prices to the 18th), as in the selection tool.

Your points earned The CQ points for the event, including stage points, mountain and sprinter classification and a bonus for the red jersey wearer as well as GC points. The full scale is on the selection tool. There is a minor classification based on stage points only: some managers like to submit their team with one eye on that.

Entering By PM on Velorooms or Cycling News to me, by the start of stage one on Tuesday 20th October. Please use the full CQ version of rider names, and do not have anything other than their name on each line. (The selection tool will help on that too.)

Issue resolution In the case of discontinued stages or prematurely finished race, I will follow CQ's decision about points allocation. If your team is overbudget or has ineligible riders, I'll let you know as soon as I can and hopefully you will swap, but I will replace riders if necessary with next most expensive from same team (if possible) or next most expensive in the race. And if there is a tie or identical teams, there has been a precedent in the current Giro, so I will refer to that if necessary.

Results service There should be daily updates.

It is probably going to take a while for the startlist to be finalised, so no need to be in too much of a hurry to get your team in.

Good luck, and enjoy the game (if the Vuelta happens)

It will help when we actually know who is actually going to attempt to race it. Or I can pick 8 Movistar riders and hope they are the riders starting for the team. I mean at this point the way the Giro is going you're picking based on who you think is going to make it to Madrid.

I know it is less likely that there is a full Vuelta, but I do really want to try and pick a team for the race. My Yates/Ciccone plan for the Giro isn't working out. Let's see some start lists!

Sorry: I may have had it on the wrong setting.

Should be OK now (perhaps someone would let me know)

And a few more confirmed teams, and a lot of changes to the presumed riders by PCS.
And I'm seeing even more differences between this and PCS. I guess I'll wait another day to see which is more up to date. And thanks!! for putting it into excel format and updating it with the starters. That's even more work by you that makes less work for me. It is very much appreciated.

Between us we have chosen 51 of the 176 riders, 18 of them as unique picks, who were marked with an asterisk in the previous list.

On 26 teams: MAS NICOLAU Enric (omitted by ArchieBoy, Laarsland, Redhead Dane and Vladimir)
23: DUMOULIN Tom
16: VLASOV Aleksandr, FROOME Chris
13: CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio, GAUDU David
12: SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro
For the Collective Wisdom team, I have used these seven, who have a total cost of 3487, and cheap unique pick Dylan Sutherland.

While I have been preparing those pages, Googolplex has weighed in with his team:

BENNETT Sam
VLASOV Aleksandr
DUMOULIN Tom
IZAGIRRE INSAUSTI Ion
GROSSSCHARTNER Felix
ABERASTURI IZAGA Jon
GAUDU David
POWER Robert

Despite what my pupils might claim, I am not so rigid as to disqualify him. If any of you want to give a mental asterisk to his results, that is your perogative. He adds a unique pick in Bennett, but robs Fivezzz of what was his only UP (Grossschartner), and is pretty low in the popularity table.

Over at Velorooms, Rote Laterne claims that she submitted a message to me last night. I don't know what happened to that in the ether, but in the spirit that the purpose of the game is to entertain as many people as want to participate, I am happy to include her team.

Even if you are cynical about when the team was put together, she can hardly be said to have taken advantage of anything that happened today:
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio
VLASOV Aleksandr
MAS NICOLAU Enric
MARTIN Daniel
IZAGIRRE INSAUSTI Ion
GAUDU David
FRANK Mathias
GENIEZ Alexandre

Stage 1 Totally unlike the opening stage of any GT I have seen or heard of

PCS have left a few riders off the GC rankings so I had to fill in scores manually: hope that doesn't happen often.

And the numbers are here, in a Google Drive spreadsheet, and that should be updated each evening with the same link, although I tend not to post the link with every update.

Anybody wishing they had done Roglic + 7 cheap makeweights yet?

Well I'm not the only picking Valverde for this Vuelta and it appears that all of us who did pick Valverde also picked Enric Mas. I find that interesting.
Given that Mas is on 27 out of 32 teams, the likelihood of him being on any four randomly selected teams is 49%, so it is almost the definition of uninteresting: it is very nearly as likely as it is unlikely.

But possibly intriguing...

Stage 2 This definitely does not feel like the opening few days

This is not a normal GT. Although la Vuelta usually is a bit different, this year even more so. Valverde did say due to all the circumstances (weather/Covid/etc) the best option was to race it as a series of 1 day races.

Standings

Luthor moves up two places to 9th in both classifications. Almost as ineffectual in the game as the Giro stage I have just updated, but doesn't annoy me in the same way.

Apologies in advance: I will be more concerned wih the other game tonight and tomorrow, but I should get an update done (and maybe not as late as this one)

Stage 5

Yes, I now stage 6 is already over, but I haven't watched it yet (and might not until tomorrow morning), but I still haven't done the stage 5 update, and someone will get to see their name at the top of a table. Without expecting it: a bit like Geoghegan Hart.

The format is different because Velorooms is down.

Standings
Northerner is the big mover, but if Los Brolin's lead is only going to be reduced by 2 points a day, it will take a very long time for the top of the table to change.
