Technical Overview:

The shortest stage of this edition, a bland transitional stage on a Monday, with a rest day ahead. Very weird. Starting from L’Aquila, the breakaway will have a good chance to breakaway immediately on the first uncategorized climb of Sella di Corno (7km at 4%) and on its long descent. It is followed by a 35 km long flat section, that then gives way to some more demanding terrain. The uncategorized climb of Montefranco (3.2 km at 5.2%) leads to the only categorized climb of the day, Valico della Somma (GPM4, 6.7 km at 5%), whose descent brings back to the flat roads, this time for good, with the last 30 km being pan flat. These also include the second intermediate sprint of the stage, that might be interesting if the breakaway has already been reeled in.

The Climbs:

Valico della Somma: GPM4, 6.7 km at 5%

No profile. It does have some decent 6% ramps in the middle, but nothing major.

What to expect:

I would expect a sizable breakaway to get the stage uncontested. However, if the sprinters realize they have only one more sprint stage after this in the whole Giro, they might not want to waste it.

Looks very tame for a pre rest day stage. Only thing that can save it for us is Bora going to war for Sagan by drilling it on the first climb to try and shell out the other sprinters then keeping the pain up all the way to prevent a regrouping.

Eshnar mentions we could see a sizable breakaway for this stage. Perhaps—since L’Aquila is involved—we can get a break of 56 riders getting a gap of 17 minutes? ;)

That was one of my favorite following-CN-forum-updates stages of all time. Each and Every time someone new logged in (expecting to see a few pages of comments about a hum-drum stage) someone had to explain what the hell was going on. So fun:)

Unless Sagan is feeling good and Bora want to drill it here, I'd be expecting a break to take it. Not sure any team other than them will come to the front to control until after the climb and their sprinter makes it over.

UAE might for Gaveria, he seems like he really wants a result and is rapidly running out of chances

Surprised at the expectations for the break. With so many sprint teams thinking they have a live chance there’s almost no chance it survives.

Merlier said he felt better yesterday. He is the fastest in the race. Don’t overthink it.

There are three consecutive climbs, the last being 6.7 at 5% . It should be relatively easy to drop the sprinters, but will any team have any reason to take the initiative?

Yeah, sure, but of course Bora want to drill it...

yeah, they may not be able to drop many sprinters, but pretty sure they will try. 50pt stages are normally also not gifted away - guys like Taco could turn into a real ciclamino contender otherwise.

Israel should also be eager to get a (reduced) sprint for Cimolai.

The profile reminds me of stage 15 TdF '15. Greipel ftw

he also won the last time they used the same finish, in 2016, and in 2014 Bouhanni won - both just ahaed of Nizzolo. Let's see who he'll finish 2nd to today

And how did you login?

March 4, 2011 means that there is some Back To The Future stuff going on here, or you had an older sock puppet brother :p
