2021 Tour de France CQ game

Must be time to start this one up.

For those who already know the games: 4000 points, 8 riders, prices as of 20th June, selection tool, submit by 12:30 pm French time on 26 June.

If that does not tell you all you need to know, here is the fuller explanation. This is the latest in a series of games for which the points scheme at cqranking.com provides both the cost of the riders and the reward scale for their performance.

You have to select 8 riders whose total cost is 4000 points (or less), the cost of each rider being his CQ score for the year to 20th June (these were released in a CQ download on 21st); the points he can score are those given for stage top tens, GC position, KoM and Sprints Classifications and Yellow jersey wearer. The prices, start-list (as it gradually moves towards confirmation), and the scoring tables are in a spreadsheet here.

That spreadsheet (or the team lists that will usually appear in this thread a few days before the race starts) will also give the version of names that I would ask you to use when you send in your team: it makes my task of entering the teams into the game's spreadsheet easier if you would follow that name format (Surname[space]Forename; but care with Danish, Portuguese, Spanish and some other names is needed).

I will provide a daily breakdown of scores and standings, based on projected positions as the race progresses, and there will be a secondary classification (the green jersey game), based on stage points only.

Send your team to me by PM on VeloRooms or Cycling News forum before the race starts at 12:30 (French time) on Saturday 26th. If you choose anyone who does not start, or your team is overbudget, I will replace the non-starter (or cheapest single rider who can be removed to bring you under budget) with the next cheapest rider (and first alphabetically if there is more than one of the same price). If you don't leave it until the last moment, I will be able to alert you if there are any problems with your selection.

(Tuesday update) A new player, @Alien Performance , was the first to send in a team, and so gets to be moral guardian of my team.

By all means start thinking about your team, but don't commit to it until the prices are clarified; in the meantime, you could always alert others to the game and help boost the numbers taking part. And now (editing this on Monday 21st) it is time to start making those choices.

All teams have now confirmed their intended starters.

For those who do not want to use the spreadsheet, and inspired by the list that @search has done for years at Velorooms, here is the startlist as we believe it will be. If I spot any unscheduled changes, I will alter it appropriately.

These are the prices and the versions of riders' names that I would ask you to use.

A day plus two and a half-ish hours to go, a slightly disappointing 16 teams so far.
44 different riders have been named, 20 of them being unique picks while 3 are on at least half of the teams.

Most managers have only about 20 points of spare change after their selection, one managed to spend exactly the 4000 point limit, while two teams have >50 points that they have left unspent.

Four riders costing more than 1000 points have been selected, but (more unusually), only two who cost less than 100.

Popularity rankings so far range from 32% to 90% of the current maximum possible.

Don't forget to get your team in.

And we are off.

First of all, an apology: I seem to have missed a squad replacement for ISN, and I have had Neilands listed rather than Omar Goldstein in the selection tool and in the lists on the forums. If anyone feels that they were severely mislead by that, and wants to submit their Goldstein-focussed team (or alteration to your team) before the end of today;'s stage, I will admit it. Otherwise, 39 teams in and the game is underway.

As usual, teams alphabetically, riders by price, unique picks with an asterisk

One team sent me their alternative team, and I have offered the chance to a couple of other teams, to track unselected lineups on the spreadsheet. It is only a quick copy and paste if you would like me to do that for the team you didn't pick.

74 of the 184 riders have been selected, and while no-one thought that it was worth putting 85% of their budget on Roglic's shoulders, three have decided to go big on Pogacar, costing 2/3 of the funds available. It is probably fair to say that one day of the Tour de Suisse made a big difference to may selections.

I will treat that group of 8 as the Collective Wisdom team. It is over budget (4107), but if I were to drop Ewan for the next most popular it would be way below, and would be even more similar to some of the teams. It gives us something to compare ourselves with anyway.

There are a lot of fairly similar teams: 13 have Thomas, Uran and Lopez. The minor picks could be key... (and I started writing that before Lopez became less of a GC candidate today)

Amis Velo, Shalgo

Carapaz with Woods: Ray10
with Thomas: Archie Boy
with Ewan: Rote Laterne
with Lopez: Mellow Velo

There are no identical teams requiring a tiebreaker selection, but teams with 7 riders in common are:
Bonimenier & Otoxiep87
Fivezzz & Laarsland
Laarsland & Otoxiep87
and Northerner with the Collective Wisdom team.

For whoever still cares about the Tour, enjoy it, but as far as I'm concerned after today's stage any small interest I had it in it fully gone and I can find much better uses of time.
Then please do. The first week of the Tour is almost always a crash fest, but I guess it feels particularly bad due to a.o. Movistar being majorly hit this time. I'm sure we're in for a lot of great racing anyway.

It's not that. It's first a stupid moron that proved the UCI doesn't care about the riders safety. Then we have injuries to likely half the peloton. Then we have the worst rider winning the stage. On top of that, this is a race I really don't like to begin with. I find it to be the worst race of the season and of course NBC has the worst two commentators for cycling on the planet in the broadcast booth for this race. So the Tour is usually a waste of time anyway, but this year it's just even MORE of a waste of time.

I had almost no interest in the Tour BEFORE stage 1 and I haven't watched a flat stage of the Tour in years. As in like the last time I watched a flat stage it was probably 2014 or something.

For our new entrants (great to have you), these points cannot be lost, and are earned by the top ten in each stage. Unlike the Tour's Green Jersey, the same points scale applies to every stage, so climbers can be just as valuable here as sprinters.

I'll normally only give the top ten (or so) in this classification, but for today, let's all get a mention, as nearly everyone has scored. The three Alaphilippe teams are clear to see: Salvaranni also has Gaudu and Higuita.

Yellow Points
This is the main game: the points for each rider, and therefore the teams, are the sum of stage points, GC and sprint/KoM classifications projected as though current positions are held on the last stage, and the 20 points given each day to the overnight leader (Yellow jersey bonus). Thus Alaphilippe now has 80 stage points +600 as putative GC winner as it stands + 80 as leader of the points classification + 50 as 2nd in polka dot category + 20 as overnight leader =830 points. Because he can lose places in GC and the two jersey classifications, he can lose points, but the stage and yellow jersey points are secure, even if he were to fail to reach Paris.

Last, but by no means least, is the inter-forum battle, with teams representing Cycling News Forum and VeloRooms, with the mean average score being taken for each group. There have always been more teams in the CN camp, but this time the imbalance of numbers is more marked, which I guess makes the performance of each VR team more important.

CN (AlienPerformance, Berflamand, BicycleBoy, BlueRoads, BluesInTheBottle, Bminchow, Bonimenier, Comodoro, Del1962, DJSprtsch, Earns1985, Fivezzz, Googolplex, JonEzeitza, Kazistuta, Koronin, Laarsland, Lecko, Northerner, Pantani_lives, Ray10, RedheadDane, Rufs, Salvarani, Shalgo, Titan31, Triley36, Vladimir, Yellow_Knight) 825
VR (AmisVelo, ArchieBoy, BikeRacer33, Leadbelly, Mellow_Velo, Otoxiep87, Rote_Laterne, Search, ZakaFan) 805
My score is not included in this: my neutrality is impeccable.

To investigate further, the spreadsheet is updated (so long as I remember to press save) each night as I do the update, and is available at the same location (here) throughout, although I won't post the link every evening.

And for the sake of my work, I hope I will normally have updates done rather earlier than this.

Yellow points
I mentioned yesterday that because most of these points are projections, they can be lost. Alaphilippe is still doing well, but he is now second, not first, in the GC rankings, and has fallen in the KoM rankings, so his score is still good, but 160 points lower than it was yesterday.
I show the riders who are the main gainers and losers that have been selected each day, like these:

Velorooms has taken the lead, 801 to778

Sprint stages, like tomorrow, usually see little change other than the stage points and the yellow bonus. But tomorrow might not be a typical sprint.

Stage 3 Falls all over the place, and a sprint from a very small group

My last words yesterday were, "But tomorrow might not be a typical sprint," but I don't think any of us expected that.
Even the sprinters that were chosen were not the ones to score most.

Ray10 has Carapaz, but Higuita; Rote Laterne has Carapaz, but Higuita and Kruijswijk; and the other Carapaz teams, Archie Boy and Mellow Velo, have the gains wiped out by Haig (and Kruijswijk and Lopez in MV's case). The unexpected bonus of Quintana gaining 90 points on a sprint stage is gained by Del1962.

Green points
Today:
Some teams seem more made for stage points like today's than trying to harvest the GC points: Earns (a new player, good to see rookies making an impression on the game) has Cavendish, Sagan and Leporte, and 5 teams have Cavendish and Bol (and two of them also have Greipel)

Yellow points
There are changes in the Points classification, and a few swaps of GC position on countback among riders on the same time, but most of today's points are from the finish.

Time trials are likely to bring considerable change to the tables, and we should see some of the riders who do not have trus GC potential drop down the GC rankings a bit, so we should get closer to a realistic table. "should".

It was too late for me to add much comment on the results for stage 5, today it is simply that there is little to comment on as it was the archetypal sprint stage.

Yellow points
20 for MvdP as the yellow jersey wearer, to mitigiate his losses in the points 'classement', but hardly any GC change to effect the scores. Because Philipsen could move up in the green jersey placings and Cav couldn't (already being top), he has more of a point boost today.

Of these, only Lecko is in the top 10 in the Green points classification, and he moves from joint 4th to top, removing Salvarani who has been there since stage 1.

Yellow points
Although there was very little of game relevance in the stage result, it has given the GC a real shake-up, such that among the top 23 riders this morning, only MvdP is in the same position this evening.

Many of those gains and losses will be reversed over the weekend, but not, I suspect, all of them.

Only three scores in the black, of which one has a huge score and one is a random selection.

Standings
The teams that suffered the greatest losses today were largely those at the top of the table, which is why such a leap to the top became possible.

Standings
The teams who were first and second this morning were the last two in the daily scores, opening the door for Leadbelly to step up from third to take the lead with what looks like a very healthy margin. But he doesn't have Pogacar, and the other virtual podium teams do.

So, can a team of balanced spends with a sprinter and a bunch of top five contenders see off those with the very expensive winner and, essentially, cheap makeweights? We will see as the yellow jersey bonus points pile up. There again, the fall down the GC table that must be expected from Van Aert cannot benefit Pogacar's score, and it can boost other riders'.
