2022-2024 Emerging Riders CQ Game

We all like to think that we are pretty well informed about this sport we follow, and have our ears to the ground about the next big thing to expect.

So who are the riders who are only beginning to announce themselves at this stage, but will get big results (or at least consistent decent results) in the next few seasons? Who still has moderate salary expectations but would be amazing value if a team were to sign him up on a three year deal now?

That is who the Emerging Riders CQ Game challenges you to identify: 18 male riders who thus far have fewer than 200 CQ Ranking points (each) in their career, and will score well between now and the end of the 2024 season.

When to submit my team? By the end of 15th January UK time (I'm willing to run the risk that the competitiveness of the game is spoiled by riders showing that they have the potential for world domination in the NZ Cycling Classic, which I think is the only event before that).

How do I submit my team? By PM to me on Cycling News or VeloRooms (although Amis Velo did put his selection through the door of my house on what I assume was the envelope of one of his Christmas cards last year). Please submit your riders in the CQ format (Surname Givenname) and extra gratitude if you manage to get Spanish, Portuguese, Danish and Eritrean names in the same combination that CQ uses. The huge, but by no means exhaustive, list of names (available, I hope, at Google Doc here) should enable you to get the right format and confirm eligibility.

How do I check that a rider is eligible? At the bottom right of each riders page on CQ is a bold printed (dark red on white) 'Points', and at the bottom right of that is a rider's lifetime score (for example, Valverde is over the limit by 35736. Or, check that he is on the list. If he is straight out of Juniors, or you know he has done very little yet, then he is obviously fine. To give you an idea, you are looking for someone who has achieved less than recent threshold passers Julius Johansen, David Dekker of Emmanuel Morin.

Can I choose female riders? Sorry, no.

Is there an age limit? No, if there is a rider who you think will be a late bloomer over the next three years, pick him. There are many riders on the list who have taken a handful of points over 20 years or so (usually in nat champs of countries that have few cyclists). By the same token, if there is a teenager who you think will do so well in 2024 that he will justify his selection in that year alone, have at it.

Is there a limit to my team's total cost? The 199 point limit is for each rider, not for your team. There is a logical upper limit of 3582, but concentrate on each rider, not on the total.

How expert do I need to be? Not very. The winner of the edition that has just finished missed out on Vingegaard, Higuita, Pidcock and other big scorers, but opted for a rider who had three times as many points before the game than he got in the three years of the game: not one of us took Valter or Bissegger, but nine of us included Karel Vacek, who scored one solitary point in three years.
And if you are really lacking ideas, I have put a list of riders selected for the main 2022 CQ game that are eligible here into the eligible names list file linked above, and repeated it in post #6 below.

Good luck

Well, after my roaring success - and by "roaring success" I mainly mean that I understand if you've sometimes been roaring with laughter at the ridiculousness of it all - at the GT games with my random selections, I've decided to give it a go!

Someone's gotta be at the buttom of the game...

I'm working on a team.

I'm looking forward to your random team. I think mine is going to be a random team of young riders who fit the criteria that I find first. LOL

Sent my team for the first time in this game. I couldn't include all youngsters that i wanted in the main CQ game, so this game gives me opportunity to track this young guns progression through the next 3 years. It took about an hour for me to make a team, so i will challenge Redhead for the last place for sure)

So among the 437 riders selected for the Main 2022 game there are 160 who are still eligible for this one.
Looking through these might make your selection easier, but do not feel that your picks must come from this list.

I have added them as a column in the list of eligible names file (the blue list on that file), but here they are:

Just under 2 1/2 days to go, 25 teams in so far (quite good, assuming that there are several that will be submitted at the eleventh hour)

113 different riders have been picked, 49 of them just once, and 8 are on more than half the teams (and 3 teams have all 8 of them).

The most popular selection has 88% of the maximum popularity score, the least has 33%.

77 riders who were picked in the main game have not been picked up in this one yet (including 5 who were chosen 4 or more times there), while 30 names are active in this game but not the main one (8 of them more than once).

But this note isn't here just for stats geeks: it's to remind you that you have until 23:59 GMT/UTC on Saturday (or in practice, until I get to my inbox on Sunday morning, so long as you avoid riders from the Aussie national championships) to get the names to me.

Good luck

I wanted to pick him but I guess he just missed the cut :p

By the way, can we take a moment to acknowledge how absurd that total is. For context the #4 rider (Alaphilippe) last year scored less than 2000 points and the #25 rider (Cavendish) scored less than 1000 points so Valverde basically has the equivalent of 36 seasons as a top 25 rider or 18 years as a top 4 rider. Take your pick.

It's easy if you are a pro for over 60 years.

Also let's note the true absurdity of this is that he actually has raced 18 seasons. 2002 - 2021 (2022 hasn't started yet for him) and subtract 2 years for his ban. Thus 18 seasons to score those points.

It's easy if you are a pro for over 60 years.

Well, 11 out of his 18 years he's been in the top 4 for the season, 14 of them in the top 7. And make that 14 out of 15 if you just go for his 'peak' years of 23-39. I don't think 'easy' is the most applicable word!

edit: of the current top 7 in CQ, the most seasons in the top 7 is Alaphilippe with 4/8 seasons, so he holds that for the next ten seasons he'll match Valv.

In case people are interested there's a page with the all time CQ ranking. No prize for guessing who's number one. Number two for now should actually be Rebellin. If you go to his page he's above 23k+ with very incomplete point totals for his pre-CQ years. Sagan should overtake that total soon but Rebellin is also somehow still scoring in triple digits in his fifties so there's a non trivial chance he'll outlast everybody and he catches up to Valverde circa 2075.

Omg how did I never know about this until now?! That's interesting... so if you added together #2 (on the list) Sagan and #19 Friere's points, you'd be close to Valverde's absolutely ridiculous score.

In other news, team submitted! I had a hard time deciding on the 3-year riders this year, excited to see how they progress!

And they are off
With 25% of the field left behind as soon a the flag drops.

40 teams, which is more than we have had for a few years, and quite a few new entrants, which is great (although they are all from Cycling News, which makes the weighting of the inter-forum battle a bit askew). It's always a bit disappointing when some regular players don't appear (HugoKoblet, Jakob747, Karaev, Kryvo, Ludwigzgz, Muddy Waters, Northerner, Yellow Knight): I hope all is OK, guys, and that you have simply had a busy week.

So, who have we got, and who have they got?

The Riders
In case you weren't counting, there are 131 of them named above, 51 with asterisks.

At the other end of the scale, we have (I think) a new record for popularity of pick in any CQ game: Ayuso is on 95% of teams. As far as Emerging games are concerned, Evenepoel, who surely was more hyped, was on, I think, 34 of 37 teams, and IIRC, Simon Yates was on all but 2 teams when he was at this stage, but I can't remember how many entrants there were that year (I'll look it up later).

38 teams: AYUSO PESQUERA Juan
32: BARONCINI Filippo
30: PLAPP Lucas (bringing a 100 point head start)
27: BRENNER Marco
25: UIJTDEBROEKS Cian
24: DE LIE Arnaud
22: TIBERI Antonio, VERNON Ethan
21: UMBA LOPEZ Abner Santiago
20: ASKEY Lewis
19: ROMO OLIVER Javier, VANDENABEELE Henri
16: VAN TRICHT Stan
15: PICCOLO Andrea, SHEFFIELD Magnus, STEINHAUSER Georg
14: LEEMREIZE Gijs, WAERENSKJOLD Søren
There are 18 names above this: they are the Collective Wisdom team

13: VAN GILS Maxim
12: GREGOIRE Romain, NYS Thibau
11: BAYER Tobias, JOHANNESSEN Anders Halland
9: HOOLE Daan, VAN DIJKE Tim, ZINGLE Axel
8: HAGENES Per Strand, QUINN Sean
7: PRICE-PEJTERSEN Johan, RANGEL COSTA Vinicius
6: ARDILA ORDOÑEZ Andres Camilo, GLOAG Thomas, HAYTER Leo, HVIDEBERG Jonas Iversby, PONOMAR Andriy, VERMAERKE Kevin
5: PITHIE Laurence, SVRCEK Martin
4: BERTHET Clément, CHARMIG Anthon, FETTER Erik, HEALY Ben, LÜHRS Luis-Joe, MAYRHOFER Marius, MILAN Jonathan, RODENBERG MADSEN Frederik, STORK Florian, VAN DEN BOSSCHE Fabio
3: ANDERSEN Idar, CHEVALIER Maxime, DRIZNERS Jarrad, FERRON Valentin, GUDMESTAD Tord, HEIDUK Kim, KORETZKY Victor, LAPEIRA Paul, PARET-PEINTRE Valentin, PEÑA JIMENEZ Jesus David, STAUNE-MITTET Johannes, STEWART Campbell, TEJADA CANACUE Harold Alfonso, TURNER Ben, VERRE Alessandro
2: CAMARGO PINEDA Diego Andres, GAZZOLI Michele, HOLLMANN Juri, LAZKANO LOPEZ Oier, MARTINELLI Alessio, MARTINEZ Lenny, O'BRIEN Kelland, OSORIO CARVAJAL Alejandro, PAQUOT Tom, PENHOËT Paul, PIDCOCK Joseph, STRONG Corbin, SWEENY Harrison, TOUMIRE Hugo, VAN UDEN Casper, WANDAHL Frederik, ZAMBANINI Edoardo

And yet there will be riders who score well by the end of the 3 years who are not on these lists, who will embarrass us all and will be logged as the Collective Ignorance team. (we don't know who they are yet, but it might be fun to guess)

Team popularity

In case anyone is new, the popularity table ranks the teams according to the number of teams each of their riders is on. For example, nearly all of us got 38 points for Ayuso, while any unique picks on your team will have got you just one point. Koronin and Leadbelly are the two that lack Ayuso, Redhead Dane somehow positions herself lower in the popularity table than Leadbelly despite that.

Bminchow's team was high, but by no means top, until he sent in three changes that greatly boosted his standings here: whether De Lie, Leemreize and Vernon give a greater boost than Ardila, Drizners and Van Dijke to the final score remains to be seen.

I should have mentioned in the post above that there were some interesting swings in the popularity of riders: Baroncini was as popular as Ayuso for a long time, but later submissions had a far lower rate of inclusion for him; Leemrieze, Vandenabeele and Romo all hung on to the top 18, but were among the top 6 or 8 for a long time, and a few riders were notable for their frequency in the entries of the last couple of days: Sheffield, Gregoire,Nys and Bayer. And although Koretsky was only on 3 teams, they were, if memory serves me well, three of the final five to arrive.

I have already explained above the Collective Wisdom and Ignorance teams, but there are two others in the bottom bit of the list that might need explaining.
The Main Game 2022 team is made up of the most popular players in the main annual CQ game, hosted by Skidmark, that are still eligible here. There is a difference in player base, but also a difference in pricing priorities, in that game, so there Uitdebroeks is very close to Ayuso, and a long way clear of Baroncini in popularity there as opposed to here. No unique picks here, but Milan Vader is on 6 teams there and only 1 here: Javier Romo is on 19 teams here, but only 5 there.
Good in 2021 represents, I suppose, the laziest way of selecting a team; they are the top 18 scoring riders in 2021 that are still eligible here. Low in the popularity rankings because it necessarily excludes those coming up from the juniors, and maybe because of a tendency against choosing again riders who didn't perform as we hoped in Year 1 of the previous edition. But no-one thought that Wirtgen, Delettre, Zoccarato or Hocevar had done enough last year to be worth a punt here?

The make up of the CI team will constantly change, and it expect it to lead for about a year and a half, as it cannot contain anyone who has not yet performed well. But who might it contain at the end of 2024? Who did you consider, but omit, and you were surprised to see that he is not one of the 115 riders that someone else fancied? On those grounds, I will propose Sam Welsford (and perhaps those 4 from the Good in 2021 team) as likely to feature in Collective Ignorance. Who do you think will be there?

Only me and Koronin with Frederik Wandahl! 2nd in the Danish RR last year. He was good as a junior in 2018-2019. Took the step to WT straight away in 2021. Only road the Danish RR in 2020, finished 16th.

I see that I should also be keeping an eye on Anthon Charmig (4 picks), Paul Lapeira (3 picks) and Campbell Stewart (3 picks) that are among the riders on my team. The latter I also picked in the main game this year.

First time that I am playing the emerging rider game. We will see how it goes :)

I managed to collect a list of about 40 names to choose from. I did a lot of back and forth. One name that I seem to have completely missed is Umba. That one could come back to haunt me. But obviously i have the most popular team so i didn't seem to take much risk. I thought maybe Leemreize would be less popular which is why I put him in there at the last minute. I was a little surprised that Strong, Van Uden and Wandahl didn't have more picked. So well done there in getting rare picks. I also think Milan looks like a good pick, even though he wasn't on my list.

Im mostly surpriced Vernon has been getting picked so much. Surely he is a solid talent, but for me I just quickly cut him, feeling he would be used as a helper/leadoutrider with Quick-Step, with so many faster than him, and with his skills well suited for leadouts (someone similar but still a bit better, like Steimle had not been getting that much points with them for instance, but perhaps I underestimate him. Quick Step surely has had good succes with many young guys, so its always a danger to leave out their Neos in this game, even if someone like Garison was a flop.

Also a bit surprising to see Charmig and Rodenberg not picked that much the way danish talents has been performing lately. Charmig seems very promessing and I expect Rodenberg to become a supersprinter at least next year. But we will see. On the other hand the third young dane Wandahl was just used too much as a pure helper last year for me give him a chance, even though he said he wanted to start riding his own chance a bit too next year.

The other rather popular pick I skipped was Vandenabeele, here due to the slow development of other young belgian climbers after strong U23-careers. But he has clearly had a good youth career, so perhaps Belgium can finally have a quick developer with him.

My own rarest pick is Gazzoli with only 2 picks, and that was a certain pick for me, and someone that was very close to make my team in the maingame also. A rider that has been world class when in form since his juniortime, and with a great chance to shine already next year on Astana, where he is one of the fastest riders. I have high hopes for that pick.
