He was beaten multiple times in mountains this Tour by some guy who was packing dead fishes for a living just couple of years ago. Sprinter? Yes. Mountain goat? Not anymore.

What does it matter what Vingegaard was doing years ago?

He certainly climbs insanely well now.

And of course Pogacar is an elite climber, Jeez...

Today, only Pogacar could beat Van Aert.

Really?

VDP?

Remco in San Sebastián form?

WvA sprint really not very good after a (long) hard race.

Belgium (and other teams) will need more than one leader to force Pog (and weak team) to work at Worlds. Otherwise, hand him the rainbows.

because there can only be one climber at a time in the world?

You are funny.

Considering the way this year has gone, Van Aert and Pogacar will finish second and third at the Worlds. Just not sure who will beat them yet, would be amazing if it's Girmay though.
I would be happy if any of those 3 won it. All would be worthy champions.

When he gets to sprint after a hard race, he has either dragged more weight over the climbs or pulled more on the flat than his opponents.
5000 meters of climbing. I was pretty sure Wout wasn’t going to win after he was nearly dropped on the final hill.

I wouldn’t consider this race a farce in the slightest. Great parcour and startlist. Better than Brugge De Panne and Dwars door Vlanderaan, and it expands World Tour to America.
Awarding more points for the victory than Miguel Ángel Lopez got for being 4th in the Vuelta is the problem, though. It awarded as many points as winning the Dauphiné, Tour de Suisse, Paris-Roubaix and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and more than Itzulia, Catalunya, E3, San Sebastián and Flèche Wallonne.

Actually, looking at that, no wonder Movistar were in trouble, as even beyond their own internal problems, the Spanish races that are obviously most important to them are getting absolutely clowned in terms of their value.

Difficult to ignore the quality of Pello Bilbao and David Gaudu this season. Very consistent.
Isn't Bilbao always like that, but usually you don't see him during the 2nd part of the season because he rides a packed spring schedule + Giro-Tour for the gc?

The point system between classics and stage races should have a complete rework, but if we are just looking at the classics it's not that much to fix.

If we look at the 20 WT one day classics, it should be like this:
500 points - The 5 monuments
400 points - Strade, E3, G-W, Amstel, Fleche, San Sebastian, Hamburg, Bretagne, Quebec, Montreal
300 points - Cadel Evans Race, Omloop, De Panne, Dwars, Frankfurt.

Potentially a few more races could be upgraded to WT-status and given 300 points: K-B-K, Scheldeprijs, Mercan Tour, Ventoux Challenge, Paris-Tours and maybe one or two of the italian fall classics?

Yeah, pretty much. I might want to elevate Omloop but otherwise, this seems quite reasonable.

Paris-Tours should absolutely get back to WorldTour status.

why the f did WvA let him? And also led from 1.5 to 0.5 km. The guy is tactically dumb (worlds 2021 anyone?).
I don't see what he did wrong:
  • he made sure the speed in the group never really dropped, because that would make him vulnerable to attacks (and everyone would be looking at him to get them back)
  • he did that without pulling the group the whole time, I don't think he really worked more than the rest
  • he ceded the front position to Gaudu in the final stretch, and was perfectly positioned in Pogacar's wheel

Just, after a hard race where he was at the limit several times against more natural climbers, he lost the sprint to Pogacar, who is an underestimated sprinter. To call this 'tactically dumb' is not very elegant nor correct, in my opinion.
