2023-24 Cyclocross Game

I've been turning over the idea of a Cyclocross game for a while, but not been quite sure how to format it. Let's not miss a year though, even though this year might be a bit of a prototype.

It won't be a CQ game (because CQ doesn't do cyclocross points), and I can only see UCI rankings as a 12 month rolling score, so the points will be according to PCS.

The beauty of the fact that men's and women's races usually happen in close parallel is that we can have men and women both represented in the same game, so I am keen to make equal interest in both sets of races.

This can be up for discussion for future editions, but my sense is that, because we have essentially the same riders in all races (that have a high yield, at least), and because outside of the top few in each race, there is minimal coverage and minimal information, the CQ style selection from a huge database is unsuitable. That in turn makes the type of budget that we have for the other games something I am less confident at setting/proposing.

So, this is what I am setting up:
Your team will have 18 riders: 6 from Group A, 6 from Group B, and 6 others; you may however swap your allowance downwards (eg, 5 from A and 7 from B, or more than 6 who are not named, and less than 12 who are)
The balance of male and female riders is entirely up to you.

Your score will be the PCS cyclocross points (elite level, PCS give men's U23 points but they are not part of this game) earned by your squad since the time of you picking them (Therefore you have an incentive to get your team to me before the Koppenburg cross on Wednesday) Points already earned this season are not to be counted, nor will those between now and you sending a team.

No entries after the start of the next World Cup event (Women's race at Dendermonde on 12th November)
Finishes on 25th February (Sluitingsprijs Oostmalle)

Entries (Surname Forename: one line per rider, no other info please) by PM to me. Not many Danes, Spaniards, Portuguese or Eritreans, so fewer variants on names for me to struggle with)

The key remaining question is what are Groups A and B. They are those ranked 1-6, and 7-12 respectively, in the 2022-23 UCI rankings

Good luck, and enjoy.

I have submitted a team now.

I initially thought there were a fixed start date, but I guess that's my own fault for not reading the rules correctly. Still I think it would be most fair, if points are either only counted from today onwards, or if all teams get points from Koppenbergcross.

An even better scenario would be to count the points from all the races that have been ridden this season, but I'm of course only saying that, because I have some riders that may very well have achieved most of their best results already ;)

I admit that the way we have started isn't ideal: hopefully that will be a first year, prototype issue. The problem is that there are races as early as August, and no-one is going to have a CX thinking head on in time for that. My current thinking is that I would use the first World Cup race as the cut off, and take soundings on whether points prior to that are counted for everyone, only from the date of submission, or whether all scores start from that date. Essentially, whether there is to be a reward for declaring early, or an advantage in waiting to see who is on form or picks up an injury.

I think that there is validity in rewarding early entry, and a few teams already have points on the board, but I hope that in a few weeks there will not be an obvious split between the first entrants and the rest.

So the inaugural CX game starts: we'll see how it goes and what tweaks might improve it, and homefully increase participation, for future years.

Just 7 of us (representing 4 countries, I believe):
Armchair Cyclist
Josedin
Muddy Waters
Postman Hat
Redhead Dane
Rote Laterne
Samu Cuenca

Something of a staggered start, so the positions for a while will reflect when the teams were submitted:

Armchair Cyclist, Josedin and Redhead Dane were in in time to score at Koppenberg Cross (1st Nov)
Postman Hat, Rote Laterne and Samu Cuenca (except for one rider, changed after that event) started scoring with the Euros on 5th Nov
Muddy Waters has given us all a head start by only starting yesterday with Jaarmarktcross.

Scores going into this weekend (so from two major races for three of us, and from one for another three)

Points this weekend:

The first 6 men home in Dendermonde helped me (very surprised to find that Laurens Sweeck is a unique pick) One of RhD's unique Van drivers had some value, and will have provided unexpected optimism for a few laps.

Here is the spreadsheet - let me know if there is a problem looking at it (but hopefully you won't be able to edit it)
As is usual with my games, it is not archived, so this link will remain relevant and as up to date as my remembering to press the save button will allow. Which means that I won't repost the link every time, but hopefully I will remember to do so occasionally.

It's beginning to look like Monday morning is when PCS updates those tables.

Points from Merkplas & Troyes (RhD nearly got a point from an event in Gernelle, but her rider came in 21st, and the points were for the top 20)

Thanks for the update.
Points for Zoe Backstedt are missing ...
They are in the calculation, just not on the display: I should have said Main points from Merkplas and Troyes.
Norbert Ribole, Orts, Bakker, Van Kessel, Bendveld, Verdonschot, Baroni, Van Alphen, Rochette and Ronhaar all scored too, but I will apply a cut off at some stage each week (though it's just as easy to put all of them up if people prefer...)
