I caught up on watching the weekend's races last evening. Seeing Vantourenhout and Sweeck no longer appearing to be in the top level of riders, I certainly didn't expect to top the week's scores, but I guess Backstedt's visit to the road team training camp, and Pieterse joining in the collective ignoring of the World Cup saved me.

Anyone regret not picking Lucinda Brand yet?

I had at one stage considered being in Belgium next weekend, and going to Essen. That didn't come off, but one day I'll get across for a weekend of these one day, some time.

Lucinda Brand could be the game changer, but I didn't know she would return to racing so soon and I honestly didn't expect her to be that good race after race.

Congrats for winning second week in a row. Crossing fingers for your Belgium trip to come.

Rucphen, Essen and Val di Sole

First midweek points in the game, I think: No, Koppenbergcross was on a Wednesday

The question at the end will probably be not whether Van der Poel can dominate, but whether his season is long enough to be decisive.

For my part, leaving out Van Der Poel was a deliberate choice (small number of races, dodgy back), but I omitted Pieterse because I had heard or read something about her not doing much Cyclocross: I fear that the words 'in September' followed but I didn't notice them. And that has made a difference:

Standings
Josedin becomes the second person to ever hold the lead in a CN cyclocross league, and Rote Laterne has very nearly eliminated the advantage I had by being in the game one race earlier

And the order is the same now, whether we take the rules that I set (as above), or we take all points since the beginning of July, or since entries closed just before Dendermonde.

National Championships next weekend, not as many points as most weekends.

An odd couple of weeks: nationals, an Ethias race with a very poor depth of field, and a World Cup race not won by Van der Poel.

So it turns out that I had been making a mistake. I did announce at the beginning of the game that this was about elite level points, not U23 ones, but it was only with the World Championships that I realised that there is such a thing as U23 points for women, in the European championships as well as the worlds. So while I have been removing points from the Euro U23s for RhD's selection of Van Sinaey, I hadn't for others. so the following points will be deducted from scores (where they have already been factored in), or will remain absent from your scores (WC U23)

I had already deducted U23 points from Van den Eijnden and Van Den Boer (unsurprisingly, unique picks for RhD): I don't think anyone else selected on the men's side has a mixture of elite & U23 points: Ronhaar and Nys could have ridden at that level but didn't: Verstrynge is the highest ranked rider to have mixed up the two levels during the season, but was unpicked.

Scrub all that: I might have been under-crediting Van Sinaey by 18 points for much of the season, but it turns out that although PCS includes U 18 points in the rider summary, it excludes them from the table. At least it does now: I don't think it was a few weeks ago.

But they have included men's U23 points in the table to the benefit of Van den Eijnden and Van den Boer, so I will continue to strip those out manually..
An odd inconsistency.

The season is getting near the end. We have an exact Cross midweek and 2 races next weekend, and after that it's just the Brussels University race, and then bikes are hosed down until the autumn. I'm not sure what amount of participation from the main names to expect in what is left.

And so there is just one race left, the Brussels University X2O race. I can't imagine those gaps beoing closed in one day's racing (although if we take points from the beginning of July, which PCS counts as the season's start, there is one battle for places that is only about 100 points).

So after this prototype, where do we go?
Picking riders: by budget or from groups? I opted for groups this year partly because I had no notion of where I might set a budget limit, but perhaps more so because I suspected that most would-be players, like me, have very little familiarity with names outside the top 40 or 50. There isn't the wide scope of races to follow that show us other riders, and I don't think many of us have a good knowledge of the field in a typical, non-Exact, C2 race. This system did make for a lot of team similarity, but essentially neutralising the top scorers is also what a budget does (not many invested 3000 pts plus on Pogacar in the main game)

Start of the season? Should we count points from the nominal start of the season, which (especially in a budget game) would bring a lot more into play about who competes in the American races? From 1st World Cup event? First Belgian/Dutch C1 race? First European World Cup race? I have no strong feelings about that, and this season's start date was largely determined by me not having done anything sooner, but wanting to have a go at launching an edition this year, so it's not a precedent I really want to follow. And if the closing date is after point earning has begun, is it fairer to all start from the same point, or to reward those who take the plunge early?

Closing date for the game? This season, the first races were in mid August, but I doubt any of us are giving much thought to cyclocross during the build-up to La Vuelta, So when could I ask you to think about it? The same options as above seem the obvious landmarks on the calendar: this year that would have been Waterloo on 15 Oct, Overijse a week later, or Maasmechelen at the end of that month.

Point scale What to do with U23 points? PCS are very inconsistent about showing them or not (included in men's table, not in women's). Or is there another scale of points? @LosBrolin : what can First offer by way of
CX rankings?

Everything is up for discussion: balance of men and women, size of team, whatever. It won't challenge the Main season CQ game on this board, but it can add a bit of fun to the winter other than honing and then regretting our selections there.

Thanks for joining in, let's see what we do with this next year. No response at all to my invitations for ideas at all yet...

You have all started your Spring Classics Game selections, I trust. By Saturday morning please, don't forget.

So after this prototype, where do we go?
Picking riders: by budget or from groups?
Start of the season?
Closing date for the game?

Point scale

Late congratulations to Josedin.

I do have no real preference regarding budget or points. Budget however is a nice difference to other games. If selection is by budget I would suggest to make the group A and possible B smaller and reduce the number of picks of these groups. I also think it should be mandatory to choose the same number of men and women in each group/have the same budget for the same number of riders.

I think the start of the season should be with the first World Cup race at latest, first C1 race earliest. Points should count when you entered the game as late entrents have the advantage to know some results, form of riders, season goals of riders etc.

I would prefer a closing date before the start of the first race counting for the game. If not, then before the first European WC race.

No U23 points IMO.

Looking forward to the second edition of the game. :)

Every race list I looked at had Brussels University down as the last race, and then suddenly I see the Sluitingsprijs. It doesn't change the order of anything, but I'll try to remember it for next year.
(I would have been top scorer this week if it had counted :( )
