Yeah, even if you were to divide him into 18 pieces, he'd still be way above budget.

I've entered my team now. The goal is to suck just a little less than in the 24-26 game. I haven't cut Pogačar into 18 pieces, even if could have been one possible way to stop his dominance.

And so we reach the deadline. We have 42 teams (or 41.94444, as one team is one rider short). A special welcome to new players Abbulf, Qazaqstan, Onizuka and Pantani4Ever. Hope all is well with those who have not joined in this time around.

But there are all sorts of records broken here in terms of rider popularity. Until well into this afternoon, and 36 teams if I remember correctly, one of the riders finally stopped being a unique pick. There are no less than 12 riders on more than half the teams, and when I get around to doing team similarity, I suspect there will be many pairings that only differ by two or three riders. So I guess that should make it a more competitive game in which every pick counts.

If there are so many riders that are must haves, does that indicate that this is an extraordinary cohort, in quality and depth, or have we just all been looking at the same sources?

So the average rider on the median team is on 56% of the other teams. I'm pretty sure no-one has worked out the equivalent metric for any previous game, but I'm sure if they had it would never have been anywhere near as high.(I've just done it for the Women's Game: 32%)

When copying a table from Excel, the site software doesn't always retain consistent columns, and there were columns between rider names and popularity scores that weren't needed for display. But when I deleted them, the popularity scores for some riders went with them.

I'm not completely sure how I've failed to include Seixas. I've definitely considered him for both this and the main game, but for some reason he wasn't on my long list for either. Well if I'm very lucky he'll be outclassed by Sparfel this year and will still be eligible for the next game.

I did have Brennan listed, and now I'm already paying the price for not selecting him, despite his good showing in the crit the other day.

Josedin's team was one of the last few to be submitted: I had Barry top of the list of those who might make the Collective Ignorance team until then. About half of the 40 unique picks came in in the last 4 or 5 teams, so the homogeneity of teams was even greater.

I don't have the spreadsheet of the game history to hand, but there have been a number of riders who have been very worthwhile contributors based only on year 2 and 3, or even just year 3, scores.

Arnaud de Lie is an extreme example of that: if anyone had picked him for the 2020-22 edition, he would have had nothing in the first year, and only 57 points at the end of year 2, but by the end of year 3 he had 1496 and outscored every rider who had been getting points for three years apart from Biniam Girmay.

So picking those that will not necessary feature, or even those who are still juniors, in Year 1 is not necessarily a bad idea.
It's not too early if they might be priced out by the time of the 2026-28 edition!

I reckon the equivalent figure at 33.6% for the Main game [for median team on popularity ranking, divide popularity score by the number of riders in a team, subtract 1 (to remove the record of the rider being in said team) and divide by one less than the number of teams (i.e. omitting the team in question)]

I hereby declare this metric, if used in considering how much variation there is between teams in these games, to be henceforth known as Armchair's Coefficient.

So who might shock us all and feature in the Collective Ignorance team? The best of those than nobody selected has a mixed history in the game: twice it has outscored any selected team, and twice it would have been second, but three times it wouldn't have made the top ten. A few names were removed from it in the last few entries to the game, but some eligible riders I have noticed as absent:

PICKRELL Riley is probably the best known that we might have expected to be picked but wasn't

HELLEMOSE Asbjørn is a fairly popular pick (14 teams) in the 2025 Main Game after his zero points last year

GAZZOLI Michele : could he return from disgrace? (CQ have his total at 194: he 'earned' 5 points in the 2022 Volta ao Algarve, which CQ cancel but I consider relevant for qualification here, but still squeaks in on 199)

CAPRON Rémi both scored 143 in 2024, and after 2nd in Tour de l'Ain might still harbour hopes of a pro contract.

SMIRNOV Ivan scored 127 in just a couple of months in 2024, but has been relegated to the Devo team. Will he be reprieved?

I didn't think of all of these, but on our teams we have at least Barry, Ørn-Kristoff, Sentjens, Beloki, Craps, Vangheluwe, Van Mechelen, Freire, Van Sintmaartensdijk, Rondel, Rafferty, Van Belle, Hobbs, Dockx, Persico and Eržen (but I have him in the 24-26 game, and I don't want to have the same riders in more than one road game at a time, which is also why I didn't pick Pescador).

In addition to them, I had Lorenzo Masciarelli (Acqua & Sapone forever!), Enekoitz Azparren, Santiago Basso, Benjamín Noval (who won't score any points until 2027, unless he wakes up one day with a dream of representing Suriname or something), Joe Pidcock, Matias Malmberg, Mathias Larsen, Martin Pedersen, Wessel Mouris and Mattéo Moncoutié either written down or riding around in my head, and then I also considered some that are currently dating fellow riders.

I like the riders but I don't see them scoring heavy since year 1 (specially Barry who will still be a junior). I would say Josedin team is quijotesco (like we would say in spanish about a team extravagant, full of outliers, missing many safer bets at leats on paper). Those teams end up in the bottom of the popularity list and usually don't perform well later in the game.

I could say the same about the unique picks in your team... High chances of performing bad.
I mean... Araya (not a bad climber but in a japanese team), Bonilla (I'll select him for sure in the amateur game of Parlamento Ciclista, but I would never take for the emerging game a rider that is in a spanish amateur team), Lopes (in a portugues conti)... I cannot imagine a future where all of them perform better than the hottest talents of the junior & u23 circuits that will be WT neopros starting this season.

My most quixotic pick is Wenzel. Selecting him I was 100% sure he will be my rarest pick, I was sure there are safest picks, but I felt like allowing myself to have a wild bet. Still finished 1st in the popularity ranking haha

The Data based teams, other than Collective Wisdom and Collective Ignorance, to which I have already referred, are three: MainGame 2025, Good in 2024, and Popular Last Edition. I'll give each concept a post.

Main Game 2025
Despite my defence of the selection of juniors, it seems logical that if a rider is to be good in this game, he should have a good 2025, and therefore should have been at least worth considering for Skidmark's annual CQ game (the Main Game). A slight majority of our teams are made up exclusively of riders also selected there.

Only two riders appear in more than 2 teams here without having been selected there: Orn-Kristoff (on a Conti team this year) and Romele (too pricey at 163 in the Main Game considering his experience and others available in that price range). The non-superstar 18 and 19 year olds, and those who, like Romele, got a decent haul of 2024 points, and therefore were in competition are underrepresented there compared to here

From the other angle, Hellemose was picked as a freebie 14 times there, but presumably thought at 26 not to be in the exponential growth phase of his career by managers for this game; age concerns are probably why Hatherly is far more popular there than here. 5 people over there are still holding out hope for Vandenabeele, who has been present in many previous editions of this game but not this time around.

But cheap or free riders with high expectations are popular in both games, so the Main Game scored pretty high on the Collective Wisdom rankings. Here they are, all selected at least 11 times in the game that has 96 teams:

For selecting my team, I did a long list of 36 riders and then decided which 18 riders I take and which 18 riders I left out. And looking at my 2nd team (+ Verstynge who was a late candidate prompted by his great cx performances) I see that all of them have been selected at least one. So I could take the 37 riders of that list withot having a single unique pick. Impressive.

Looking at a even longer list (this one without an order, is just me selecting interesting names from each class year that I would seriously consider to make the long list of 36) is when I can find some interesting names for the collective ignorance.

Younglins (maybe too early)...

Good in 2024
Obviously if a rider was too good in 2024, he is not eligible for the game, but a young rider who scored well in excess of 100 points in his first year has some momentum and promise, and it will be thought that there is more to come over the next three years.

Or so you would have thought, but I have mentioned already Remi Capron (not so young, admittedly) who we each seem to have concluded simply had a flash in the pan. There are a few others in the Good in 2024 squad that have not been selected much, or at all, for this game, where we just don't seem to have confidence in them to sustain it.

I don't import previous season points into the spreadsheet for ER games as a distinct data field, but that will usually be a large proportion of the pre-game points that I do track. So not surprising that the Good in 2024 team has the highest pre-game points total (there is a cap of 3582 on that): it might be that looking at the same total for our teams shows those who consider this a good omen at the top, while those concentrating on those fresh out of (or still in) juniors are at the bottom.

Yeah: I don't think many of us will be embarrassed by the Collective Ignorance list this time around.
If you haven't tracked that team's performance before, be aware that it is a dynamic selection: it will probably have a number of Australians in it if I do an update after TDU, who won't stay in it for long. It will never have riders waiting to get going, so usually has a large lead early in the game. But most years it gets pegged back.

Popular Last Edition
So we get to the end of Year One of a cycle of the game, and inevitably some of the picks have still not made it to the 200 point exclusion mark. Does that mean that they were just picked too soon, and will surely thrive in the next edition, or do we conclude that they don't have the potential we once thought.

Some riders have been on the team lists of these games for six years, maybe more (given that three years is a minimum): Waerenskjold and Aurelien Paret Peintre come to mind without checking the data. Emil Herzog, and possibly others, seem to be on the way way to joining them. Others get discarded from our thoughts quickly: Rootkin Gray was on nine teams last cycle, none this time. And some were taken by a significant number last time, in prelude to being very popular now among those who risked waiting (and possibly missing out had they reached 200 points in 2024)
