I guess it's a bit like CX courses. If lots of rain the course gets muddy, technical and difficult. If dry, then not so much. Still, if one didn't race it oneself it's hard to tell how difficult it really was.

Not all too impressive speed by the elite women coming in about at the same speed as M55 age group but I suppose they didn't need to go faster.

I still think theres a big disparity between "gravel" and gravel between the USA and European definitions, such that you end with stuff like this which looks like a normal days riding route to my eyes, and I say it every year but when you see some of the qualifying events that look insanely difficult in comparison, theres something wrong with how these WC courses are designed.

next year is Perth apparently, which will at least thin the field out, and is looking like it will be a lot harder and more technical.

Could have been fun if G. Vermeersch could have made it into the top-10:

And Pidcock seems to like the number 6:

Well deserved win for FV and nice to see Mohoric make it to the podium!

Pidcock really doesn’t have it when courses are this flat and technically easy.
Yeah, could have predicted this......it's similar in muddy, flat CX races......

His big strength is the combination of climbing, technical descents and his excellent skills...........Take them away and he's not likely to win. And I suspect why none of the top XC racers turn up (though Mont Sainte Anne clashing doesn't help).

The reality is that European gravel races, and many American ones too, favor the same sort of rider that does well in moderate to difficult, though not necessarily technical, road classics. The best riders with these attributes are in the road peloton. Bring them to Unbound and they would win too. I don't think the technical skills of an XC specialist overcome the better endurance of a road rider unless the course is essentially a MTB track.

Don't get me wrong: I love gravel and challenging tracks. I'll be riding some rocky logging roads today. But that is not where big time gravel racing is heading
