2025 Vuelta CQ game

3rd GT of the year: here we go...

Many of you already know the game, but newcomers will be very welcome.

Your goal is to get as many points as you can (according to the system at CQranking.com : points available for all finishers according to their GC position, top 10 in each stage and on points and mountains classifications, and for the overnight leader: column G2 in the first two tables here) during the Vuelta. But you must choose 8 men who are taking part in the event, and each rider has a price which is their CQ score for the 12 months to 17th August (as confirmed in the download on the CQ site). You have a budget of 3500 of such points.

During the race, I will post daily updates of scores at that point, as though that were the final result of the race, and in a minor classification, which tracks only stage points.

When it is time to submit, please use PM on this site to me. There is no need to include teams or prices: they only make for an extra step before I can enter them into the spreadsheet. And you make life much easier if you can use the same version of names as used on the CQ site (Danish, Eritrean, Portuguese and Spanish language names might require particular attention). Your team should be sent in before stage 1 starts on Saturday 23rd August, presumably mid-morning Italian time. If you send your team in in good time, then I can check it and let you know if there is a problem: I do have a rather convoluted way of replacing ineligible picks: I'll post it if necessary.

Riders who are due to compete, their CQ names, and their prices , as well as the scale of points available to be won, are on a Dropbox spreadsheet here

Good luck to all.
(post updated 18/08, after prices update)

Hoping @search hasn't already spent a bunch of time on this
These are the prices for the game and the versions of the names that I would ask you to use in submitting your teams.

Where teams are not confirmed I have used the predictions of PCS and First Cycling. (No longer applicable)

Team totals are just for interest, make no difference to the game.

If you don't find this ordering of teams helpful, blame the UCI team codes, not me!
Ordering within teams was most to least expensive, but when the listing has changed from what seemed to be expected, I just pasted the new name (and cost) over the one he replaced.

There is an interactive version of this here.

Would it be theoretically possible to pick a team solely comprised of redheads

I think it would be difficult...

BTW, not that I think it'll matter much to people's choices - as he wouldn't be in a point-scoring role anyway - but Casper Pedersen has already revealed in a podcast that he's not going.

I thought I had finished editing the selection spreadsheet and the list of participants above, then Ineos go and make a last minute change. Now updated with Turner rather than Hamilton (luckily, no-one had picked him).

But at least it gives me an excuse to bump this thread, and remind you all that the deadline is the start of the race tomorrow, 13:22 Italian time, so about 22 hours from the timestamp on this post.

Thus far 19 teams in, 59 riders picked, only 2 on more than half the teams (the most popular pick is not as popular as I would have guessed, and the other one I wouldn't have expected to be on anywhere near half the teams). 28 unique picks so far.

Another withdrawal, Caruso out to be replaced by Pickering. He had been selected by one manager, who told me he was submitting his team early because he was going on holiday, so I hope he has some internet access, as the automatic replacement is probably not that attractive a pick.

Edit: Manager involved has responded, and picked someone who will probably outscore the default replacement.

Right: that was a nice ride. Nobody availed of the bit of extra time, so we are 34 teams, calling on 74 riders.

I was starting to wonder whether 3 and half hours was too early to begin to worry about your whereabouts.

My team was not meant to look like it does, but when I saw the startlist I was horrified to discover that there were only 3 Basque riders on it (coincidently wearing 51, 82 and 113). That's the same amount that started the Deutschland Tour and fewer than rode in Limousin this week.

I knew that not having Euskaltel and Equipo Kern in the race (they contributed with 9 Basque riders between them last year) would hurt, but (for different reasons) having none of Bilbao, Arrieta, Aranburu, Izagirre, Lastra, Lazkano, Barthe, Barrenetxea, Fraile, Castroviejo, Okamika, Sorarrain, Ibáñez and Arriolabengoa be at the start was definitely unexpected. I only just managed to reach 8 guys by including former Euskaltel/Euskadi riders in my line up.

and there should have been 33 riders marked as unique picks

Collective Wisdom
The most popular 8 riders would have been over budget, so for the Collective Wisdom team I have removed Landa and included Riccitello.

When I commented on the two riders that were on more than half the teams (19 teams at that stage), Vingegaard was out in front (but not as ubiquitous as I had expected, but the second most popular at that stage that surprised me was Pellizzari (on very few of the subsequent 15 teams)

Tactics
As in the Tour game, the Prince of Denmark decision is key in a selection: To JV, or not to JV, that is the question.

8 teams have decided against including Vingegaard: Laarsland and Nevs have picked Ayuso as their leader instead, and Peixotini demonstrates Portuguese loyalty by having Almeida as his top man; Search has placed Ciccone as his leader; Laarsland and Amis Velo have decided to go for multiple well placed riders rather than having top step as an ambition, and SamuCuenca and Redhead Dane are doing their own thematic things, with Samu having 3 riders that would otherwise be unique picks for RhD, the latter being left without a UP for what must be the first time in these games.

No-one has quite emulated UAE in going for Ayuso and Almeida, but TRiley has a two-headed beast in Almeida and Vingegaard, and DJSprtsch and EvansistheBest have both opted for a Vingegaard/Ayuso combo (there's a phrase that would sound good in a Geordie accent)

Peixotini was forced into a late change when Caruso hurt his hand: Canal would have been the default replacement, but he picked Riccitello instead. Pickering, having been brought in at the last minute, was picked up by Madrazo in place of Bouwman, and Queen Stagiaire, being one of the later teams to be sent in, was able to avail of late substitute Turner.

4 Seasons Challenge
26 of the teams here have participated in the games I have run for the Spring Classics, the Giro and the TdF, so are eligible for the 4 seasons challenge (total of scores across the 4 games). Slow Climber and Josedin have not returned after the Tour (on holidays?).

Going into the Vuelta, this is how we stand:

We have 1 player new to the game, so @MagliaNera , if you need anything explaining, please ask (here or PM me), but otherwise I shall assume everything is understood in the updates.

We'll all get some points here eventually, but for now, it's just:

That default team is the logical conclusion of my method for selecting riders as close together in budget, but as close to the maximum spend as possible, if a team had ineligible riders. It includes both Vernon and Coquard.

Given that sprinter picks were a small proportion of our considerations, and that many of them did little today anyway, that is about as random a listing of our teams as is possible (except that Peixotini, possibly having looked at the parcours for the Deutschland Tour instead, has three sprinters: Viviani, Van Uden and Zingle). Tomorrow may impose a bit of order.
