2026-2028 Emerging Riders CQ Game

How confidently can you state where you will be in your career by the end of 2028?
More relevantly, how confidently can you state where 18 male riders will be in their careers by the end of 2028?

The purpose of this game is to find 18 riders who have rather limited success to date: fewer CQ points in their whole careers to now than Aadne Holter scored in just this year (200)

But, of course, to be successful, you need a team that will score well over those 3 years, maybe even as well as Del Toro, Gregoire, Onley, Martinez or Lipowitz, who each scored more than 2000 points in the three years of the edition that has just finished (2023-35). Note that Del Toro was still a junior in the first of those three years, but would still have been a valid pick (nobody took him though)

So scour the team lists for promising youngsters, scrutinise the results of the juniors this year, examine the lists of new signings, and re-visit those that you thought would make a breakthrough this year but didn't quite making it. When you have 18 names you are happy with, PM me with that list of names, but do so before the Tour Down Under starts on 20th January (but that's Australian time, so on the 19th or the small hours of the morning for most of us). Please use CQ formats of the names if possible.

We typically get about 40 entries, so I'd hope for at least that again, but by all means spread the word and invite new players: the more the merrier.

Once you have sent in the names, all you have to do is sit back and hope that I remember to post updates about once a month. And hopefully retain interest in it for a large proportion of the three years.

Good luck to all the managers, and to the young riders on whose hopes and ambitions they are basing their teams.

I'm not sure that it is very useful to anyone, but there is a huge list of names of riders that have scored CQ points within the last three years without exceeding the eligibility limit here. Of course, there will be riders straight out of juniors that are not on that list that you might wish to go for.
The second tab on that spreadsheet is a list of those who have passed the threshhold during 2025: don't pick from them.

Rather more helpful (I suspect) will be a list that I aim to put up soon after the entries for the season long main game run by Skidmark are released, which will show those picked there and eligible here.

Meanwhile, my team is lodged with Onizuka, who was the first to send in a team.

OK, time to make your selections easier.

Of (I think) 493 different riders selected in the main game, 191 are eligible here. That doesn't necessarily mean they come with the seal of approval of more than one contestant in that game, but rather than the technically infinite combination of names that you could have come up with, here are some that at least one player believes is placing in their squad of 33.

You can, of course, find others who are not on this list: 11 of the 69 different riders already submitted are not on it.

You know the available options this year are tragic when the (I think) two most obvious riders consist of one guy who’s still on a DT and another guy I deemed too expensive for my main game team.

It's certainly very different from last year, when there were 6 or 7 must haves that most will have known they will be including long before they sat down to think about it.

There are actually 4 riders that are clear (but none of them universal) in the popularity table. Probably including the two the DE refers to.

Just to make sure, I understood the rules. So you can only pick riders, who didn´t scored more than 200 during their whole career. That means Noah Hobbs is not eligible, because he scored 201 points until now, right?

I hadn't really paid attention to the start time of the TDU prologue: it's an evening race (18:00 local time), so you have a few more hours than I had thought: 08:30 CET , 07:30 UK/Ireland on Tuesday morning. Still a case of making sure it is done before going to bed on Monday night for most of us, I would assume. Probably even for those in Aus, unless you can find time for it in your working day.

But not a lot more time, 42 1/2 hours from timestamp of this.

20 teams so far, 96 riders selected. 40 of them unique picks, 13 not selected in the main game this year (so not in the 'cheat sheet' in post #4 above), 28 were selected for the 2025-27 game but have not yet reached 200 points.

Almost correct: You can only pick riders who have less than 200 points (just the way I happened to phrase it in the first post 12 years ago). So even if Hobbs had come 8th rather than 7th in the Tour de Bretagne GC, and therefore had 200 points, he would still be ineligible.
Yeah, I chuckled at Hobbs clocking in at 201 points.

I can quite easily guess the DT guy I think, although there are at least two DT riders who I think will be among the most popular. But the expensive guy could be one of two options, in my mind, both of whom are not in your main CQ team. Does the DT guy and the pro guy come from the same former Roman province, or different but neighbouring ones? In the unlikely event of the DT guy being the other one I'm thinking about, the answer to the geography question could be one each, or both from the same, both ways. Are y'all confused yet?

I kinda can't bring myself to submit my team, because I'm half thinking that surely I must be able to come up with some better riders than what I have. But I guess this is just a dreadful edition.

Benjamin Noval is not on CQ yet: this is my assumption for the name he'll carry. One entrant sent his father's name, but that was over the limit.

Surprised that Sparfel is only in joint fourth on the popularity table, he was the DT rider I was referring to.

I thought having three first-year U23s (Agostinacchio included) was unusually low, but apparently most of us are even more pessimistic about the trainwreck that is the 2007 cohort than I am.

Alvarez is more surprising. I primarily thought he was the one you were referring to, but it was between him and Sparfel. For the expensive one, I was pretty sure you meant either Pericas or Decomble, and those are indeed the two most popular.

Hmm, something tells me no one else has used Austrian races to scout over half of their riders. I thought that was route one...

I was devastated when I realised the winner of GP Vorarlberg, Jaka Marolt, wasn't an option, similar to what I experienced with Gal Glivar two years ago. Instead I settled for his former teammate Paul Wright for biathlon reasons.

Killian Verschuren has finished 14th, 13th and 12th in his last three national tours (Slovenia, Austria and Slovakia), so if that upward trend continues he's gonna become this year's Tobias Halland Johannesen in the Tour de France.

I have zero expectations for Rafael Reis, but I just found it funny that there was another guy with that name.

I was a little worried Callejas had been popped when he wasn't confirmed to be staying at Petrolike, so I was pretty relieved when their roster was finalised.

Van Kerckhove (hope to be able to pick another one with that surname for next season) and Borremanns-appreciation society here.

Two players are way ahead of you. :D I wasn't really gonna pick my customary final-year junior this time, but I was so underwhelmed by the other options that I included Noval. I see some players have even gone with several riders who can only start scoring from year two of the game.

Yeah - biggest headache for me is always trying to balance between riders having ridden proper development spells and now ready at top level (Thornley, Tuckwell), guys jumping straight from juniors to WT (Agostinacchio) and riders who might break out in 1,5 seasons time (Noval, Seff vK). For every Seixas there are a lot of Marco Brenners and Luis-Joe Lührs (only love from my end, just stating facts).

I don't really get the love for him from as many as 20 players. Unless I have missed something. But it seems like he hasn't done other disciplines than road either, where people might have seen promise. He's been really anonymous until getting some decent results as a final-year U23, at an age where it's almost rare to see people still be in that category nowadays. Based on his profile, I'm willing to bet quite a lot that his career will be mostly spent as a worker/lead-out rider. Especially at a team such as RBH. But I'd love to hear from someone who might know more about him.

I hope it is not too much a betrayal of private correspondence to reveal that DE was very taken aback that there was a rider who was, at that time, joint second in the popularity that he didn't pick. That was Thornley, who did drop down the table slightly as other teams came in.

Anyone willing to suggest who might be in the Collective Ignorance team by thhe end of the game.?

I guess Patrick Eddy might have brought himself back to the attention of pro teams, and already has more points than some riders that have chosen will have accumulated by the end of 2028.
