2026 Women's CQ Manager game

Page 2 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
If someone should get a pass you must be the prime candidate. AC won't announce the teams until tomorrow, so if you got the time to quickly scramble a team together you may possibly be in the clear no matter what.

But one thing's for sure: you have until the TDU to enter my Emerging Female riders game ;)
Yeah: even if the proposal to delay is defeated, anything that reaches me by tomorrow early evening will have been submitted before any reveals, and I'd expect people not to make too blatant a call on the race this morning...

Democracy has had its say, and has said that entries are closed.

So there are 25 of us: here are the teams

Riders:
The Collective Wisdom team is the names in red, of whom there are 14, with two virtual places filled by the average of the 4 in orange (PFP included with the group on 7 teams, because if I added her score in its entirety, the team would have been over budget)

I'm surprised LS hasn't given Chacón another chance. Unlike at this point last year she has a confirmed team in Eneicat and although they have dropped down to club level, she could still end up riding a heavier schedule than we've seen during recent years. Well that's my hope anyway.

I explored the idea of having a team with Kopecky, Vollering and Wiebes in it, but I couldn't find enough value for the remaining 6 points for it to make sense. If the Three Amigas accumulate 4000-5000 points, I would've needed my 13 other riders to average 200-300 points in order to reach the 8000 points total that history tells us could lead to an overall victory. Of course if they manage to replicate the 5900 points they scored in 2024, the cheap picks would "only" have to average 160 points, but I wasn't prepared to take that bet.

Inspired by Armchair, I also tried asking Microsoft Copilot for advice. First of all, it claimed Trek had signed multiple new faces. Of course if this had been the men's game I would have had to check to see if they had bought even more riders out of their contracts, but that hasn't yet become an issue with the women's team.

It also created a very potent Swiss Army knife by the name of Elise Reusser. I would definitely have picked her had it been possible. In addition to mentioning some retired riders as well, it told me about a climbing prodigy by the name Fenna Smink, who's allegedly riding for Visma Development, but is expected to join the World Tour soon. Next time, I think I'll ask Gabrielle Copilote Fortin for help instead.

My team is kind of thrown together as I have been rather distracted by wintersport, but it's largely built on a theme of redemption arcs. And there were a lot of riders scoring disappointing scores last year such that you never know which one is the one you're gonna miss out by leaving out, that it's harder to justify those shot in the dark hopes. You'll notice that a lot of long-running themes are present, not only have I gone without Lilibeth (who is very viably in for a profit but whose maximum points potential is likely at a level around the 312 she scored in 2023) but also no Vollering (first time), no Harvey (still a potential for a bounce-back, but that hope is growing ever more forlorn and it's Rossella Ratto all over again) and even no Stiasny (stuck her head above the parapet last year, so I'm no longer as convinced that the profit is coming), all of whom have been staples of my lineups.

One year I came very, very close to picking a team of Vollering, Niewiadoma and Uttrup which would have cost 3995 and left me 13 riders to choose with just 5 points.

So, errr... has anyone considered making a Women's Spring Classics Game?

I kid...

Mostly. I can't really do it myself; should be pretty obvious to anyone that I don't have the technical know-how, and I can't demand someone else does it.

I do believe we have all avoided picking any outright retired or currently pregnant riders, so that is a step up from the men's game (I assume none of the questionable picks there are pregnant either), but Abi Smith has announced that she'll be focusing on gravel this season so she probably won't be scoring bucket loads of points.

You are probably more "ear to the ground" re women's racing than most of us; have any of us fallen into those traps?

In addition to Smith, Julia Borgström has also been forced to step down from the World Tour and will be combining road and gravel as studying, but I don't know which road races Kasseien Fiets Huis will be showing up to. I guess it is very much possible DJ Sprtsch's last available points could have been put to better use, but time will tell.

I decided to back Realini for the second year in a row, but after I did the same with Cavalli last year I don't know what to expect. The fact that she is in Australia is a good sign at least.

I am not sure how strong Arlenis Sierra will be after her return from pregnancy. With Ferguson around her opportunities may be more limited than in the past, but being a zero pointer she was pretty much the first rider I selected.

Whew, seems I avoided making an obvious mistake like last year when I forgot about Van der Breggen, though my chosen team this year does not score high on the popularity list..
Edit: Ha, forgot Realini, would have chosen her had I not forgotten her results from last year..

Another metric I posted in the men's game was the score that each team would get if every rider exactly repeated her 2024 score

So I am the manager most dependent on bounce-back

Great range of different rider choices and different teams - should lead to fun and volatile competition. Credit to armchair_cyclist!

Thought I was smart picking Megan Arens as rare pick, before cutting and pasting the wrong Arens into my team. Anyway I'm now a fan of Maureen Arens!
I was wondering about that. Now I am going to research her :)

Okay. Maybe a short summary of my team a la the Men's game (which i haven't done yet).

I had five iterations of my team until i finally submitted the one. I was going to submit my 4th iteration, but of course i freaked out at the last second and bumped two riders. My apologies to:
Evita Muzic - I really think she will be better this year (and possibly quite a bit better. Her interview was one of very few I actually read)
Frederica Venturelli - I love the name and future potential, but didn't NEED to have her

They got bumped because for some reason Isabella popped into my head as someone who made a huge leap last year at a young age, so why not another huge leap this year.
Isabella Holmgren - Huge year last year. May ride a tougher schedule this year and the team has quite a bit of depth. But nice that we include all CQ points in the women's game, so maybe another year before the leap to the really big races. Wait, she did three WWT stage races last year? Well now.
Lore De Schepper - I don't know much about her. But I had one place to fill and didn't get excited about anyone else around that price. Fourth in l'Avenir and 22nd at Giro, at 20 years old. So becomes one of my three unique picks.

Four riders were on my initial "have to have" list.
KOPECKY Lotte - Maybe she is not a 2000 pointer anymore, but def can get back to being a 1000 pointer.
REALINI Gaia - Not sure what happened last year. Broken elbow in january but shouldn't affect the entire year. Something was known though as she didn't start any GTs.
OSTIZ TACO Paula - Unreal talent. Only 14 picked her? Am I missing something or have I just been marketed too?
PELLEGRINI Francesca - Hmm. Not sure why. Maybe I read something? Thought she was a cheap sprinter. But three years at UAE dev and not a single win. You mean I could have tried Ava Holmgren instead?

The rest:
FERRAND PREVOT Pauline - Yes she had a great year. But seems ambitious enough to win even more. Not saying Vollering can't beat her in GTs, but maybe two classics and better at Vuelta and WCs?
PIETERSE Puck - Yes it is a stretch. But I really like her. I'm not sure why she had to stop racing after the TdF. So I'm hoping for a few more races from her. Legend in all the classics but maybe looking for some stage success in a grand tour as well. I know. That is a lot of wishing and hoping.
FERGUSON Cat - Finally made my team on the 4th try. I think I read an interview. I have to stop doing that.
KOOL Charlotte - I really wanted a good sprinter. Had a down year last year (only one win?!) but still feel like she is second best. And that can be worth a lot of points.
LUDWIG Cecilie Uttrup - Picked her last year. So why not at this price? Can't JUST be a domestique. Can she? Again, I think I read an interview. I need to get a job.
BRADBURY Neve - Pretty obvious
VAN ANROOIJ Shirin - Not as obvious. But as long as she isn't on a complete career downslide, she should get a lot more points (and maybe don't do every GT. Let's focus on the classics a la 2024)
BAUERNFEIND Ricarda - Can't remember why I picked her. But she made a team change. I'm assuming it's not just to help the Holmgren sisters. Back to 2023 form?
BRAND Lucinda - Yes she is CX legend. But didn't she get 350 CQ points two years ago? At least one other fell for it, so I'm not alone.
KINGMA Maya - Needed someone cheap. Haven't had much luck with 18-19 year olds (just like when I was in College) so why not try a "try"-athlete? Wait. Article I read said she signed with EF in July. But now PCS says she is on some team called Aromitalia Vaiano. Now I'm depressed.

In summary, Puck, Cat and Lotte all win the same races, giving me legendary classics CQ points. PFP wins the grand tours. Kool beats Wiebes in a race. and Neve starts it all off with a victory in TDU. Could happen.

Happy to talk someone through the methodology of my spreadsheet if they want to take it on (its a bit different to the other games), but I think I am at capacity.

Unfortunately I am not playing in this game (only saw it after deadline). However, @Armchair Cyclist kindly asked me to add something for this game. I will do it only for the main games though and as I am not playing this game... won't pay much attention to it. However, most logic is copied from men's game so should work. Maybe some oddities in the beginning as it was a lot of copy/paste.

See website below that should update automatically:

That's a brilliant facility that Shakes has put up for us. Team similarities are there, and it will track progress through the season (or regress, for me having started well)

A thousand thanks.

Okay, I'm a little confused...
When I click the link, I get to the team ranking for the this game.
However, when I click "upcoming races", it's for the men.
Statistics are also for this game.

The upcoming races tab probably should be removed. CQ doesn't offer that information, so it's a whole extra set of mapping one set of IDs onto another that I have not tried to put together for Shakes, and that he would then need to encode.
