It's still almost an off-season so let's talk about another endurance challenge, completely different from Everesting: 24 hour ride. The goal is to cover as big distance as possible in 24 hours. Big challenge: it's about fitness, nutrition and will power. Absolutely brutal stuff and the record is even scarier: 1026 km! (42.75 kph). The mark was set by an ultra cyclists Carlos Strasser on a circuit in Austria:

It's often said that for such a big ultra race one doesn't need record-breaking VO2max to succeed: efficiency in zone2, proper nutrition and will power being the most important ingredients. But make no mistake: those ultra-athletes still have really high VO2max and someone with superior VO2max (and equally trained in super long Z2 efforts) should still have higher chance to win (as he operates on lower % of his max. capacity).
In the poll I chose Remco for obvious reasons: he's an excellent time-trialist and also has great endurance in long classics. IMO he could beat this record with a good margin. He would need some specific training for this but I think, when it comes to endurance, the difference between 6-7 hours classics and 24 hour ride is much less than i.e. between 1 hour ride and 6-7 hours ride. It's a lot about nutrition and will power, less about the engine (which is already well trained for long efforts and moderate/lower zones).
So what do you think would happen if in-form Remco takes up the challenge?
