What do you expect of 2nd class sprinters in TdF?

Kadri and Ravard (AG2R)
Ciolek (Quickstep)
Perez and Urtasun (Euskaltel)
Bonnet, Geslin and Roux (Francais de Jeux)
Dumoulin (Cofidis)
Sabatini (Liquigas)

They're about 3rd or 4th class. Petacchi, Farrar and Griepel are 2nd class.

To answer the question, absolutely nothing.

Only Dumoulin or Ravard could do anything and only if they get in the break or it's a small group at the finish.

No mention of Romain Feillu? I expect him to be right up there on the more selective sprints in the first week.

These are all the guys with a sprint at the Tour. Hopefully these are in a correctish order.

***** Cavendish, Farrar, Petacchi, Greipel
**** Hushovd, Haussler, Bennati, Boasson Hagen, Boonen
*** Rojas, Ventoso, Bozic, Hutarovich, R.Feillu, Dumoulin, Ciolek
** Mondory, Duque, Roux
* Sabatini, Urtasun, Perez

A: Cavendish, Farrar, Petacchi

B: Greipel, Bennati, Boasson Hagen, Boonen, Hutarovich

C: Rojas, Ventoso, Bozic, R.Feillu, Sabatini

D: Dumoulin, Mondory, Duque, Roux, Urtasun, Perez

The leaders, classified. The As are solid potential stage winners, the Bs are outsiders for a win, Cs good placings in field sprints, Ds manning the breaks basically.

Bennati will ride the Tour of Austria. There are other people on the list that are uncertain of starting.

Ah ok. Just got the names from cyclingstartlists.com + added the couple mentioned in this thread.

Greipel is a potential stage winner isn't he? The Cs and Ds I just scanned their CQ for the last two years so they were mostly random.

Actually, although I previously flippantly remarked that Cav was in a class of his won, I think we should only include him and Petacchi as A class if the definition is solid win potential. Of the last 3 GTs, of the others, I think only Hutarovich has won a bunch gallop (excluding the Madrid stage where Cav had a mechanical).

I dunno, I'm totally behind Greipel, but I'm not expecting him to eat Cav's lunch yet. Farrar and Petacchi can do that, on their day. Petacchi has taken Cav a fair few times, actually.

Greipel is yet to win anything of real significance since leaving the comfort of HTC's famed lead out train, so I would not include him as a first class sprinter. If anything he's emerging as a decent classics rider. I would say Greipel, Ciolek (not sure if he'll be there), Boasson Hagen, Benatti, and Hushovd (only because he most likely won't be protected) are the second level sprinters; they have stage win potential but will most likely come from a small sprint after a large break or split. If that's the case we might even see Gossy take a couple stages. The sprinters I expect to consistently contest field sprints are Cav, Farrar (he'll be inspired), and Petacchi.

Outside the giro Cavendish had done little also. Greipel didn't ride the giro, so it isn't fair to belittle him yet.

I hope he wins a stage or two at the tour.
