Will probably need a catalyst. 1 of 3 things can do it.

1 Uci make a race PT there (like they did in my dear Poland, which worked)
2 Start the Giro there, which could work
3 Have a big star (like what Sagan might do for Slovakia)

Maybe having a PT team might also work.

Until then i expect it will never be too big an event in these countries.

I can think of another thing that helps, although it doesn't have quite as much the effect as the three you mention - having a big name rider like Paco Mancebo ride the Tour of Bulgaria ;)

And it's already working. I hear there are much bigger crowds roadside and much more interest in the race in general (despite the lack of TV coverage), compared to previous years... :)

Thats good to hear. I dont know why there are bigger crowds though. Maybe this is the effect of cycling simply growing as a sport. Particularly in Eastern Europe with Katusha and Menchov. I still think you will need a Bulgarian rider to perform better for the sport to grow to its potential there.

You say theres no tv coverage? Well thats somewhere to start.

Nah, it's not really growing... It's just that people had never seen a rider of Mancebo's scale in a Bulgarian race before, so many of them go to see him.

Maybe it's growing a bit with the coverage of the GTs on Bulgarian Eurosport, but still too few youngsters go in for cycling and there are too few cycling tracks (none of the indoor variety in fact, at least not yet) and most importantly - by far not enough money for the sport... The lack of money is the main reason why TV coverage is impossible to organize as of now - you know better than me that it's not an easy and cheap thing to do and someone has to pay for it, not just the TV company. So for the Tour of Bulgaria there are just several-minutes long reports from every stage, with footage mainly from the finish line...LOL

As for the need of a good Bulgarian rider - I think we do have some decent ones, the best of them in recent years being Ivaylo Gabrovski.

But he missed his big chance, when he was with the Jean Delatour team about 8-9 years ago: Laurent Brochard was the leader of the team and Ivaylo was maybe the second best rider with a lot of talent and potential. It was thought he would surely be selected for the Tour de France (would have been the first ever Bulgarian). But he was also too young and hot-headed (I would even call him naive), so he went way ahead of himself, refusing to be a domestique and to work for Brochard and, of course, that sealed his fate...

(At least that's what I've heard. If someone knows the story better than me and I'm wrong, please, do tell. :))

Stage 8: Saturday September 18: Gabrovo - Troyan 154K ^^
Stage Profile @: http://www.bikemap.net/route/673564

Georgiev won the climb from a breakaway group of 5. Of those 5, Nelson Vitorino is highest in the GC - 13-th overall, at 1'08''

The second big climb (Beklemeto or Troyan Pass - http://gallery.guide-bulgaria.com/NC/Lovech/Troyan/Beklemeto/Gallery.aspx?4245=Ski_resort_Beklemeto and http://gallery.guide-bulgaria.com/NC/Lovech/Troyan/Beklemeto/Gallery.aspx?4246=Ski_resort_Beklemeto) to come ;)
Let's see if Mancebo will be able to bridge the gap and win this tour...

Edit: I already know who won that final climb and the stage, but I'll leave it to DAOTEC to post the stage results and the changes (most probably decisive) in the GC... Stay in suspense ;);)

So, guys, after all, my friend DAOTEC here (I hope) will tell you the story and the results of the queen stage, as well as the radical change in the GC... ;)

Sorry, no pics :( I'll definitely be at the finish line and take lots of photos, if one day the tour comes to Ruse, but I think it never will (and never has) come here.

'To do' final stage of this 60th Tour of Bulgaria:
Sunday September 19: Troyan - Teteven 148k [MAP]

Ryo Hazuki said:
was vasilev from a break??

I haven't watched the stage, but AFAIK he was not. He wasn't in the group of 5 riders, who were reported to be at the front between the two big climbs. That means he must have done great on the second climb (Beklemeto) to be able to put 3 minutes into someone like Mancebo (he was about 1' behind him before this stage).
