I think the weird assumption was assuming sprinters without any hilly pedigree would contest this

Congrats to MVP on a deserved victory. Well done. Also credit to Campenaerts on trying solo actions.
Attacking man of the day - Pogacar. You can always count on his attacks - no matter if it's Alps or Belgian cobbles! The guy spent a lot of energy by attacking himself (he was quite close but the front group was consisted of excellent TT-ists and one-day riders) and afterwards by attacking in a group (+strong accelerations on cobbles). He had the legs to fight with MVP today but chose bad moments to attack - his mistake was he didn't follow the decisive attack (I guess he was too far back in the peleton).

Can't blame Campenaerts for his tactics today. They were on point. He knows his sprint isn't the best so he went all out for that win. Unlucky that guys like Benoot, Kung and Politt (???) decided to help out the Ineos guys and VdP but that's racing.

And when Küng was about to cross to them, it didn't exactly add much sprinting firepower.

I actually think Campenaerts would have won that. He did win his Giro stage in a two-man sprint (I don't know the exact sprinting credentials of Oscar Riesebeek, though, probably not too crazy, but still).

Keep in mind Merlier probably wins last year if Van Baarle hadn't been so strong on a route that was harder on paper. Don't think it was too strange to assume people who made the first bigger group over the Kemmelberg like Kristoff or even Philipsen could make it over the hills here, was not personally expecting Jakobsen here though. However, between the racing starting before the trickiest climbs, the crashes, the motorpacing, the lack of cohesion behind, and the biggest names actually contesting unlike last year, those prospects disappeared very quickly. I was among those saying there was a strong chance of a reduced bunch sprint and I still think there will be one in the next few years, glad to be proven wrong though because the final 15 minutes were as good as we'll get all season.

It was the same with Lombardia 2021: in the preparation races, he lacked a little bit, and in the Monument itself, he was unbeatable.

I think Tadej will be unbeatable in de Ronde…

Nice interview with Pidcock just then where he said that it was impossible to keep up with Campanaerts on the downhill. Interviewer pointed out he was riding a 58 chain ring!

When I saw Jakobsen was his main favourite I really thought he had lost his marbles.

Thankfully he is quite a bit more accurate 99% of the time.
