It is an exception, mostly due to his Mom's surname being "Blanco" or "White" in Spanish. He was -- and still is -- a Real Madrid icon. Connect the dots...

It's something we've kind of copied from Brazilians over time. As you know their football stars have long been known on a first name -- or nick -- basis (Pele, Zico, Ronaldo, Romario, Juninho, Roberto Carlos, Cafu, Kaka et al) -- so now you have the likes of Raul, Iker, Xavi, Xabi, Isco etc. But then again, many others are mostly know by their first surname only: Arbeola, Iniesta*, Guti*, Torres etc.

As for Alberto Contador, it's either one -- most people will know him either way. And of course, there's "Vamos Conta!"

*aka "Don Andres" and a shortening of "Gutierrez" respectively.
