I was watching the 2005 Deutschlandtour yesterday. Why oh why climb the Großglockner and leave the Rettenbachferner unused AGAIN?

12km at an average of 10,7%, let's face it, that has GIRO written all over it.

That would be on par with or tougher than Crostis and Mortirolo? That is the climb Levi won that year?

Yea, probably. They climbed to 2670m in the Deutschlandtour. The road goes higher but would put most of the last 3km in a tunnel.

I figured cos they climb the Stelvio (2758m), Col Agnel (2744m), Großglockner (2504m) and Gavia (2621m) it wouldn't be too much to ask.

Then again, they aren't going all the way to the top of the Großglockner either, otherwise Giau could never be the Cima Coppi.

Edit:

Ferminal, I'd put it among them. Mortirolo is 12,8km @ 10,3% so slightly longer but slightly shallower - but reaches slightly higher peak gradient (18% as opposed to 16% on the Rettenbachferner). I'd say the two are comparable. Crostis is 15,5km @ 9% so less steep but much longer. Harder to say.

I'd say it's similar to the Mortirolo. Both are steepest in the bottom half, where it seldom goes below 10% at all. Rettenbachferner has a couple of very short false flats that allow a bit of recovery, but while Mortirolo stays over 10% most of the way then shallows out, Rettenbachferner stays hovering between above and below 10% for a while before the shallower closing phase.

Considering the Rettenbachferner is 800 meters higher, I would say that given the length and gradient are almost equal, the Rettenbachferner is more difficult (but I haven't ridder either, so what do I know :p but usually the the extra 800 meters elevation can make a climb quite a bit more difficult).

hey Libertine
has arroyo been named leader for giro? or are movistar given a few guys a free role. Maybe vasil?

Arroyo always has a free role at the Giro. He and Bruseghin are both protected, but expect them to try a few things to get more in contention than they otherwise would be.

Ventoso will be expected to fend for himself.

Contador, Navarro and Hernandez have been in Italy doing recon on the mountain ITT, and stages 13, 14 and 15. I think 13 is tomorrow. But La Gazzetta dello Sport has some good quotes and a nice music video of the training. Full screen video with nice mountain scenery here:

Tiago Machado-51.00
Jose Rujano-67.00
Carlos Sastre-101.00
Paolo Tiralongo-151.00

these deserve a shot.contador odds are terrible low(1.75).

I don't think the odds on Tiralongo is worth it - anyway Bet365 has him at odds 301.

what do you mean :S Your post hasn't been deleted....ehh I don't think anyone noticed...

But I think this talk has a home in another thread and here should be left for the giro talk. Most of this doesn't seem to have much to do with the giro
