AD Survey on Dutch riders doping

Leon van Bon (40,1994-present) "No. But who believes me? Good answers to this question do not exist.”

Michael Boogerd (40, 1994-2007) "That's really a ridiculous question. I really have said a hundred times that I have used no drugs.”

Boogerd must be the most talented rider ever! He won the 1999 Paris Nice in such a dominant manner that it put the sh*ts up the Postal train.

And the TVM team that left the tour with tales of all sorts of drugs being found in both team vehicles and the riders samples must have been keeping Leon van Bon out of all that.

Love this one from Bruinsma:
a guy like Steven de Jongh now says that everyone deserves a second chance, well I don't know. **** off with your second chance. He drives a nice big car while I'm too old to climb on the bike. "

This is my favorite:

Alain van Katwijk (33, 2002-2007) "No. And I regret it afterwards. If you now hear everything that was in circulation, then you'll think: Gosh, there must have been something in that peanut butter sand
wich.”

van Katwijk once called me a ballerina when I almost crashed, put one foot down and managed to pirouette out of trouble without hitting the ground. He didn't do it in a nice way either.

FWIW, Boogerd recently said he always noticed a huge difference between the level of the US Postals in spring, and in the Tour, where he couldn't keep up with them anymore.

And so he's a doper?

Of course not!

Boogerd's on air denial next to Mart Smeets looked decidedly insincere.

5th in the 1998 TdF without EPO??

I imagine some of them might be telling the truth. Definitely not Boogerd, or Dekker for that matter.

But by far the worst response was Van der Poel's:
I'm not going to take this nonsense. Journalism has cause more than enough damage to the sport, by digging into the past. I never read any positive stories about the present. Good afternoon.

Stefan van Dijk (36, ex-BGC, Lotto)
"No.. No! I've always thought of my future, I have deliberately not risked. "

The same Stefan van Dijk who served a suspension for riding away at high speed when he saw the testers waiting at his home?

Is he now the benchmark for what was possible without doping those days?

Boogerd won Paris Nice because Rabobank eliminated almost everyone on one of the early stages.

Nothing suspicious about that. Just 7 riders in the top 10.

One of the few succesful tactical moves of that team in history, and immediately it's down to doping ;)

No and not necessarily.

The report mentions it was 2 degrees and raining. This could have suited the Dutch.

But I also read that Rabo's dominance really put the wind up some other teams who were worried they might have found something new. I think this was in From Lance to Landis.

quite the admission by v.d. poel.
v.d. poel on the juice, not that it surprises, but it sheds a dark light also on Dutch cycling as a whole in the 80s (the most successful decade the Dutch have had in cycling) as well as on CX, in case anybody still entertained the thought that CX was/is doping free.

What do you mean, sheds a dark light? Van der Poel was caught twice during his carreer (which makes it a bit silly to call him in the first place). A lot of riders from that era were either caught (Theunissen, Zoetemelk) or confessed on their own (Rooks, Mathieu Hermans, Peter Winnen) and said that their teams provided the doping. What does a stupid reaction by Van der Poel add to that?

Boogerd was of course doped to the gills and even with all that juice it couldn't stop his whining...even tho Rabo were one of my fave teams I was glad to see them call it day as I thought it one of the more honest reactions to things coming to light...almost everyone else is pulling the old post festina scandal BS about the bad old days and how everything is shiny, new and clean now...

You have to wonder about his kids...

All this denial coming from a country where dope is legal?

Now we know how to say Omerta in Dutch.

Dave.

lol, everybody is an expert but nobody knows the true facts. what country are you talking about? because dope is illegal in the Netherlands. they have some of the lowest rates of drug abuse/addiction in the world. virtually no prescription abuse (as compared to what is going on in the USA with scripts). drugs are much harder to find here than any big city in America. they all ride bicycles instead of driving cars and for such a small country with no land or resources, they constantly churn out some amazing athletes.
and I think Van der Poel's answer was by far the most honest: "I'm not going to take this nonsense. Journalism has cause more than enough damage to the sport, by digging into the past. I never read any positive stories about the present. Good afternoon.”
