ADD This - share feature slowing down the site

The site seems to be really slow since you added the 'AddThis' share widget to the article pages.

My browser seems to really hang when the Javascript call is being made to the AddThis server.

Has anyone else noticed this?

@tubularglue

The AddThis Javascript isn't for advertising, it adds the Share icons to the top of the articles, like share to Google Buzz, Twitter like on Facebook. So AdBlock add-on doesn't 'block' it. I did add it and its nice. All those other 'ads' are getting called from other services so blocking 'em eliminates a bunch of http requests to load a page on CN and definitely speeds things up. Thanks for the tip!

The AddThis javascript still seems to slow things down, but it is intermittent, sometimes it loads really fast, other times its pretty slow. My power cuts out at least 1x per day. When that happens FF acts like it crashed, so I lose whatever was 'new' in my cache. I think that might be it. When I have the AddThis JS and images in cache its fast, when I have to fetch it anew I can experience some lag?

Same problem here, even worse: I can't see pages with that widget at all :-(
It shows a headline, a green "share" button, and a blank page.
I tried to block addthis.com, but that does not seem to help.

I'm using GoogleChrome and FF 3.6

Thanks for the feedback. I'll notify the techies.

Daniel, I really like the addition of the 'Sharing features' AddThis provides for the site. It can just be a pain when it further slows down the site - tbh the site is already pretty slow I find ;)

I think your Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) are slow too. Not sure why - they're supposed to speed up the site! I use OpenDNS to speed up DNS queries and make browsing faster... but your sub-domains seems to take a long time to resolve? You may want to have the techies take at look at your DNS settings too.
