The blame was put at the feet of Dedacciai - something to do with their alloying processes and the exact combinations of the various metals in the tubing - and too much of a pursuit for weight saving.

Not being either a metallurgist or a framebuilder, I can't say for certain that this story was true - but the slew of broken frames with "Deda" stickers on them that the shops could show me certainly made for compelling circumstantial evidence ...

So, don't necessarily damn aluminium based on that experience ...

I think you are right, I had a Bianchi Deda 61.10 tubing and the downtube cracked. Had never crashed or seen any abuse..

I rode a Cannondale bike then I replaced it with a Cervelo Soloist (sadly no longer manufactured).

What both frames have in common is their use of 6061-T6 alluminum alloy. I am an aerospace engineer and use this material frequently in my designs - it is weldable, fatigue and crack resistant, and has been around for many decades.

Both bikes give a good ride on any surface (for rough roads tires make a difference).

Merckx..gotta look in Europe but great frames.

Not sure if Merckx are still offering the scandium any more. That was a great frame. Only seem to be offering one complete tb 7005 bike for 2012. Pity.
