Doctors: Pechstein suffers from blood anomaly

BERLIN (AP) — German doctors say a hereditary anomaly was responsible for the abnormal blood levels that led to multiple Olympic speedskating medalist Claudia Pechstein being suspended for doping.

Gerhard Ehninger, the head of the German Society for Hematology and Oncology, said Monday that an evaluation of the case points to a light form of a blood anemia called spherocytosis -- apparently inherited from her father.

The 38-year-old Pechstein is fighting a two-year suspension imposed last year.

She insists she wasn't using performance enhancers but has lost appeals to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and Switzerland's Federal Tribunal and couldn't compete at the Vancouver Olympics.

Pechstein won nine medals at four Olympics. >www.usatoday.com/

If you follow this case it makes you feel scripting the next 007 movie with corruption UCI likewise at the highest levels, combined with daily razzia's and political turmoil far from over.

Pechstein has a website updated many times with solid doping content on it: http://www.claudia-pechstein.de/index2.shtml

Today story: "Es ist erschreckend, welchen Aufwand man betreiben muss,
um sich von einem Verdacht zu befreien, der nicht bewiesen ist !"

Mods - please can we have a rule against offensive avatars?

If people want to make crackpot extreme right remarks can they please go to an appropriate venue and let us talk about cycling here?

Ravens - you are an idiot.

The truth can be offensive, and the Clinic board knows all about that.
What you (let people) believe is all up to you, until the facts catch up with you. If I keep my eyes closed, all my adversaries are riding clean, and our governments have our best interest in mind, and stick 100% to their campaign promises, nomatter what.

So, athma is "out", and genetically enduced varying blood levels are "in".

it is Hitler, everyone knows it is Hitler. Everyone knows Obama. Why buy into the controversy. It is an avatar. If it is kiddie porn, ban it. But it is only an avatar. Tea Party functions say worse than that pic everyday.

I am not really fond with the pic, but wont let myself be offended by it.

Loophole II

Around 800,000 people suffer from the disorder in Germany, including, according to doctor Andreas Weimann of Berlin's Charite Hospital, Pechstein's father. that is 1 out of 80 alone in Germany  Did cycling miss out on this one ?

The athlete, whose house was searched earlier this month by investigators from Germany's Federal Crime Office (BKA) as part of an ongoing investigation into doping, has always denied doping and never failed a drug test. She now hopes to clear her name.

World Class ...

Interview Deutsche Welle: 'Wouldn't Trade her Medals in for Anything'

3?-year-old speed skater Claudia Pechstein was born in Berlin (22/02/1972) and still lives there today. Claudia Pechstein's first big break came when she became junior world champion at just sixteen. She then scooped the 3 thousand meter bronze at the Olympic Games in 1992. And today, she's Germany's most successful Olympic winter sports athlete with four gold, one silver and two bronze medals to her name. Her favourites are the 3 thousand and the 5 thousand meter races. She hopes she'll continue living up to her reputation next winter. Claudia Pechstein's favourite song right now is Dido's "White Flag".

Who deserves an apology?
"I should really apologize to Playboy magazine because I've had to cancel them once again. I'm going to be busy somewhere else so for the time being I'm going to have to cancel again."

Do you have an unfulfilled ambition?
"I'd like to see the world from a bird's eye point of view, in other words, I'd like to do a parachute jump from a plane and experience what it's like to fly. It must be a really great feeling."

What do you treasure most?
"I really treasure my gold medals. They're priceless. They have a value that money can't buy. I'm very proud of having a few in the bag, so to speak. I hope I'll be adding a few more to my collection." 'awesome'

Pechstein's web site is pretty persuasive.

Even though much of its content could have been put together by a law firm I am sure most on this forum would be persuaded just by her quote from Michael Ashenden that he could see no sensible basis for inferring any kind of doping from the pattern of her blood values.

After all it is his contrary view on certain celebrated (but non sanctionable) 1999 urine samples that has become something of a holy grail for many.:)
