Any room for the old favourites?

One thing that the whole for or against Lance debate has done is that all the old favourite (pre-internet chat room and forum) debates don?t get a look in.

Remember when we used to argue about?

Shimano or Campagnolo
Tubular or Clincher
Centre Pull or Side Pull
Carbon or Aluminium
Pyrenees or Alps

And some other old favourites?

Coppi or Bartali
Anquetil or Poulidor
Bordman or Obree
(Showing my age here...)

Is Indurain boring? Discuss!
Carrera denim kit ? enough said!

Maybe we should revive these in a sub forum of the non doping forum maybe the non-doping forum classic or Forum Eroica?

Just a thought! (but I am still drunk on the success of Cavendish?s victory today!)

Carrera denim kit ? ---- I have one of those jerseys, I use to, I still have my orginal La Vie Claire from about 86, too bad there are too many replica's these days (but you can tell the difference)

Is Indurain boring? Discuss! Most of the time yes. But at least he rode to win more than one race a year, and that attack into Liege is one of my favourite Tour moments, ruined only by Bruyneel wheel sucking his way to the stage win. Guess thats where Hincapie learned how...

YES. Love this idea, more please! My two pennies worth....

Shimano or Campagnolo --- SRAM.
Tubular or Clincher --- Clincher for road, tubs for cross
Centre Pull or Side Pull --- Centre for cross, side for road (love the asymmetry!)
Carbon or Aluminium --- Steel
Pyrenees or Alps --- Pyrenees (much more pretty)

Anquetil or Poulidor --- Anquetil
Bordman or Obree --- Boardman
Is Indurain boring? --- Yes. Lance's role model
Carrera denim kit ? ---- Damn, that was shocking!
Ventoux or Alpe duez ----- Tough one this. Ventoux because you don't arrive at the bottom absolutely knackered already!
Rain or dry (for paris roubaix) ---- Rain for two days before, overcast and breezy for the race.
Should Laurant Fignon have been a tennis player? Could he play tennis then?

surely that was the pink ONCE kit?
Nope, tight lycra cycling shorts printed to look like jeans.....that rates a 8.765 on the gay meter, pink rates only a 8.324. Neither is as gay as actual tight jean shorts, but what is?

Coppi for exploits on the bike, Bartali for those off it.
Anquetil for being one of the most underrated of the truly great champions (and for his somewhat kinky life story)
Obree - the 'bike made from a washing machine' trumps Boardman every time
Indurain's Luxembourg TT is one of the most beautiful pieces of bike riding you'll ever see, and if that's boring then I'm happy to be bored. Once saw him blow away the opposition in the Pyrenees putting the hammer down and his chase after Chiapucci on the epic day to Sestriere was not boring at all. Oh and another one for the Liege stage and the crapness of the Hog.
Ventoux because it's epic in a way the Alpe never quite manages
Wet and muddy P-R for me, please
As for that Carrera denim kit - a lot of great rides got done in those denim print shorts but La Vie Claire or maybe Super U for me, please
(apologies for having no opinion on geeky bike stuff but my bike gets me to the shops and down a nice quiet country lane on a sunny day)

I'll try a few...

Shimano or Campagnolo - Campy FTW
Tubular or Clincher - Clincher (but i'd try tubes)
Carbon or Aluminium - Steel!!!! (Unless it's a Time, then I'll do carbon...)
Pyrenees or Alps - Alps--no, Pyrenees--no wait...
Rain or dry (for paris roubaix) - Rain, plz

I'd also like to know what you all are riding, so we can see if your preferences match your bike.

I have a Fondriest Status Plus w/ 2008 Centaur. So steel w/ carbon stays/fork and rolling on Ksyrium Elite clinchers. Me encanta :D

Shimano or Campagnolo - Shim currently
Tubular or Clincher - Tubular Boobular
Carbon or Aluminium - Aluminium - for lifting onto trains, etc
Pyrenees or Alps - Alps
Coppi or Bartalli - Bartali
Anquetil or Poulidor - Poulidor
Bordman or Obree - OBREE
Is Indurain boring? I would have to say yes, and he pioneered the way to the identikit tour win. But he did make a point of taking in the other races and did occasionally go for it, unlike Jocko Homo.
Ventoux or Alpes d'Huez - Alpes d'Huez
Rain or Dry for P- Roubaix - Rain up until the last two hours of it, then let the mud grow hard and heavy
Carrera denim kit - I had thought that was a nightmare

From my experience:
Kelly or Roche - Kelly all the way
LeMond or Hampsten - Hampsten for surviving the Gavia
Columbia or Garmin - Garmin
Giro or Tour - Uhm, tough, but Giro
Ardennes Classics or Cobbled Classics - Cobbled, and will get to go to all three this year!
Classics or Grand Tours - Classics

But you can upgrade this to 2009. Don't need it to be an old favourite:
Shimano/Campagnolo/SRAM - Shimano
Tubular/Clincher/Tubeless - I think tubeless will be the way forward
Centre Pull or Side Pull - Irrelevant now.
But you can replace with: Conventional/Deep-section Carbon rim or Traditional Wheel/Factory Built
Carbon/Aluminium/Titanium/Steel - Ti
Pyrenees or Alps - Alps

And some other old favourites?

Coppi or Bartali - Bartali, but you need to be old or a cycling geek to understand this.
Anquetil or Poulidor - as above
Bordman or Obree - Only really relevant to Brits
Could now include:
Armstrong or Contador
Armstrong or pretty much anyone else
Boonen or Cavendish

Is Indurain boring? Discuss! Yes, he was probably doped but he has class
Carrera denim kit ? enough said! Enough

.

I had the pleasure of standing on Hautacam in 1994, right about where Indurain reeled in Pantani - not boring at all :)

He was also a great descender. Once Rominger got away from him I think over the Tourmalet by 30secs or so and he closed the gap extremely fast. Not boring either...

Shimano or Campagnolo - Campagnolo wears in. Shimano wears out
Tubular or Clincher - Clinchers for junk miles. Tubular for special events
Centre Pull or Side Pull - None. Brakes slow you down
Carbon or Aluminium - Steel for Training. Carbon for racing
Pyrenees or Alps - Pyrenees for the TDF. Alps for the GIRO
Coppi or Bartali - Gino was the master. Fausto was the skilled apprentice
Anquetil or Poulidor - Jacques was a rock star. Raymond was like you and me.
Bordman or Obree - Graeme was Old Faithful. Chris was Superman
Is Indurain boring? Don't know, never met the man. Sure knew how to race a bike though. Doping or not.
Carrera denim kit ? Classic Pantani. I would never wear it, only if paid to.
