I have the 2022 version and I am pretty sure that 40mm is possible. It´s probably best to look up the specs though.

Random thought , although I have not heard this idea articulated anywhere I wondered will the XC tyre width limit remain at 33mm? Wider tyres are becoming normal in road racing even approaching 33mm .
Would allowing a wider tyre in CX be a good move?

I for one vote no, cross, gravel and MTB should remain clearly defined different events.

Thanks! while I think CX courses are so different to gravel courses I believe thinner tyres in CX do preserve the need to have better bike handling skills.

Remember when straight bars were allowed in CX?

Definitely no change for tyre width.
I think it was naughty Thomas who brought about the rule changes for straight bars.
At the lower levels then beginners can still ride what they like, when I raced at a rather mediocre level I recall buying a new Focus cross bike than came equipped with 35mm tyres. I only had one cross bike and occasionally used a mountain bike as a pits spare if needed.
